IN MEMORY OF DEAN REDMAN Born: June 11, 1953 Died; December 27,1970 30 Activities: FFA 1,2,3,4; Class Play 3. Senior We were driving along Interstate 32, when we spotted a small elevator, and something in a bean field caught my eye. We were so curious that we thought we would drive over and see what it was. We drove closer and we could hear the roar of the crowd, and the screams from the animals. We parked and got out of our car and walked curiously over to a man who was stabbing papers. To our surprise it was DON JACKSON, an old grad, from L.H.S. We asked him what the big event was that was happening in the forum. He told us that it was the grand opening of the “L.H.S. Class of ‘71’, Traveling Circus.” As Don pointed out that he was busy, we decided to move on. Since it was almost noon, we were lured by the aroma of greasy ham- burgers frying. We walked up with our mouths watering, where a tall, dark-haired girl waited on us. She loudly said, “What do ya want?” We recognized her as JOHANNA MARDIS, the ole “Greasy Spoon” waitress, still in the same line of work. She called her order back to the chief cook and dishwasher, who was TERRY CLARK, busy scraping grease off paper plates. We were outraged by the high prices, so we took our complaints to the manager. Johanna took us to a small table at the end of the hamburger stand, where, behind a magazine, sat the famous RODNEY KING, owner of the chain of “King’s Greasy Hamburger Stands.” As a funny feeling entered our stomachs, Rodney pointed us in the direction of the next booth. The booth was crowded as MARLENA PHILLIPS handed out her small glasses of “Phillips, Milk of Magnesia.” Our pain was soon eased, so we turned around and headed for the many side shows, which turned out to be three. There was GAIL KINERT swallowing neon lights; we always knew she was kinda bright. To my right was CAROLYN ELIOTT swallowing fire; it all went to her head, and to my left was DONNA RAE REEDY and her trick tunas. She always sang a good “tuna” in chorus. After our thrilling adventure through the side shows, we decided to make our way into the “Big Top.” We purchased our tickets from the ticket lady, who just happened to be DEBBIE ISSLER. There in the front office were none other than LARRY NEWLAN and DEBBIE BURGE. Larry was busy typing the programs, and Debbie was enthusiastically running them off. We grabbed our programs and hurriedly found our seats as a voice started calling, “Ladies and Gentlemen, We wel- come you to the L.H.S., Class of ‘71’, Traveling Circus.” We recognized the voice of the ringmaster as JOHN WOOD’S. The first act that caught our eyes was the “tight” rope act, performed by JIM ADAMS and JIM PRATT. They rhythmical- ly walked on the wire to the music played by CATHY WILDMAN and DIANNE GLANCY, directed by SUE GRADY. A circus is not complete without clowns, but the Class of “71” had one big one, JEANNE ALBERT. Jeanne skipped in and behind her came the Jolly Green Giant, followed by CINDY GOOD dressed as a green bean. Our attention was directed to a platform above us as CHUCKY BINDER prepared to make his swan dive into a beer bucket. After the dive was completed, Chucky’s act was a big smash, but he walked away a little “pail”. The spotlight focused on LARRY RIGGS zooming in on his Honda 150. He was so shocked by the applause by all four of us, that he had to see what was going on, and forgot to watch where he was going. There was suddenly a great “uproar”, and Larry had driven his mechanized monster into the cage of Panthers. He did manage to escape when bouncing JILL BAILEY bounded out to Larry’s rescue. Her quickness and agility surprised the ferocious Panthers, and astounded the audience. Larry was saved! LESTER MECHLING and LLOYD JOHN- SON boldly marched out followed by their team of chattering chimps. Lester and Lloyd did leap frog around the ring while the chimps blew their whistles and rewarded them with bananas. All of a sudden the canvas opened wide and out stomped Jungle JIM GORDON followed by his shrieking herd of enormous elephants. He picked them up with great ease, and stood confidently with an elephant in each hand. The crowd went wild until one of the elephants sneezed and Jim’s act fell through. Of course, a circus is not complete without horses and pretty riders. BECKY CARTER’S Cantering Clydesdales pranced into the arena, ridden by JEANNE BODDY. The act received a lot of applause from us and, of course, Jeanne’s family. The next act was one that only the Class of “71” could have-Big BETTY WALLIS’ Wonderful Walking Walrus Volleyball Team. The Walrus’ were superb, considering they had such a good teacher. 32 Prophecy The first of the circus didn’t go to the dogs, but the final acts did-the Irish Rovers, whose trainers were CHERYL and DENNIS SMITH. The act was a howling success. We guess it was just the luck of the Irish! Their act was not alone, as SANDY JENT paraded in with her giant bass drum and her own special breed of dogs, “Mabel’s Mutts.” the mutts leaped gracefully through Sandi’s hollow drum, as Sandi snapped out her commands. Sandi and her mutts made their way to the giant cannon where the Class of “71” was loaded and stuffed in. Sandi struck a match and anxiously lit the fuse. The cannon went off with a great bang, and the Class of “71”, except Sandi, was launched into space, and into an unknown future. Lovington Wins 27-6 By Joe Cook Success on the football field ultimately brings fame. Lov- ington High School's Lloyd Johnson could do without the latter. Johnson, a sandy-haired quarterback, is the best known athlete at Lovington. There's a good reason. Last season he was a Meri- dian Conference sensation, completing 69 of 123 passes for 1,082 yards and 11 touchdowns. Johnson started right where he left off in the opening 21-8 victory over Arthur by throw- ing for three touchdowns. He passed for 143 yards and bar- ring injury should crack the 1,000 yards plateau again. A shy lad, Johnson would rather forget about his statistics. “He couldn’t tell you how many touchdowns he threw last year if you asked him,” said Coach Dale Doehring. “He isn’t worried about statistics, only the next op- ponent. Good boy.” Doehring isn’t kidding. Johnson would rather see a 200-pound lineman coming at him than a cameraman. He was as nervous as a long- tailed cat in a room filled with rocking chairs as he posed for pictures. Afterwards, he suggested that pictures of the receivers should be taken, too. After all, Johnson reasons, “It takes two to eomnlete a na« ” FOOTBALL AT LOVINGTON two Moweaqua Lloyd Johnson tossed touchdown passes and scored on a 13 - yard run to steer Lov- ington High School to a 27-6 Meridian Conference football victory over Moweaqua Friday night.
