The Lovington High School Class of 70 is having their 20th reunion this year and since LHS is my old alma mater, I was chosen to do a story on them for the society section of the New York Times. According to advanced reports the class of 70 was to receive an award for the most successful class of the decade. I had just gotten settled in my seat when I heard wild screams. Turning to look out the window, I saw a man jump out of a convertible only to be mobbed by a flock of screaming girls. When he finally broke away from them and boarded the plane, I took a good look at his face only to see that it was RAND LEON BROUTIN, international playboy. Realizing that he too was going to Lovington, I got up to ask the stewardess if 1 could take a seat by him. To my surprise 1 found her to be another old schoolmate LINDA ECKEL, who had reached her goal and assured me 1 could sit by him. When 1 sat down, we shook hands and immediately became engrossed in conversation. 1 noticed he had a copy of the Loving- ton Reporter. He was reluctant to lend it to me but finally 1 got it from him and read the entire one page newspaper. The most interesting column that caught my eye was one entitled Advice to the Love Lorn. I hurriedly read to the end to see who the author was and was surprised to find it to be BOBETTE BODDY. 1 remembered all too well she was always so full of advice for everyone. It seemed like no time at all until we were landing at Lovington International. As 1 got off the plane, 1 realized the airport was built on what used to be the favorite hangout of the Class of 70. Many a night they would gather there at Curry’s parking lot to make sure Sky King earned his pay. 1 walked into the airport and saw a familiar face walking toward me. It was none other than the mayor of Lovington STUART BOWERS. He offered to show me around and as he drove me to my hotel, he told me the proprietor was DARLA ENSIGN. All along the way I noticed Lovington had really changed. Stuart pointed out the places of interest. He showed me a factory that took up most of a city block. Stuart told me it was really a big business. It was a tack factory owned by DAN DAWSON. He had just devel- oped a double pointed tack to do twice the work. Then he drove me down State Street and into the heart of the city. I saw a sign saying. Voice Lessons. Stuart told me our old star vocalist, BOB BARLOW, was the instructor. He also added that Bob was Lovington’s answer to Tiny Tim. Just next door was an impressive looking office building. I was surprised to see a sign saying, Marriage Counselor, JOHN DAVIS, Proprietor. I could tell he was doing his job well by the starry-eyed couple who were holding hands as they came out the door. Driving on we saw a Barber Shop. I asked Stuart to stop so I could get that haircut I’d been meaning to get. As I walked through the door, I re- cognized the barber to be FRED WEST. I had just gotten settled in the chair, glanced across the street and my eye caught a sign saying. Train With TRA1NOR. Inquiring further I found it too was doing booming business. The secret of its success was her famous slogan, “Stay More Lean With Marlene.” No sooner had I sat down, it seemed that Fred was polking me for the the money. Stuart reminded me of the time so 1 just paid the outrageous sum and left. Finally after the 30 minute drive from the airport, we arrived at Ensign’s De Lounge. 1 got settled in my room and Stuart and I went to the hotel dining room to have lunch. He had planned for us to have lunch with the most celebrated member of the class. Honorable Senator DAN MURPHY. The mayor told us he recently made an appointment to the juvenile court of the city. Because of his outstanding background and experience in this field, STAN BROOKS was made judge of the court. The senator said he had just hired another member of the old class as his governess. And he said it was NINA CASTEEL, the nanny for Danny’s dozen. Senator Murphy commented that the conduct of the youth of the community was commendable. He 30 Senior Prophecy said credit was partly due to the fine guidance of the school officials. Stuart told me I knew two of them. The principal was, DEAN CREVISTON. He finally got to be a leader and not just a follower. Then the conversation turned to the other school official as that of the successful and experienced coach KEVIN BLYTHE. 1 learned the Panthers had won the District Tournament for the second time in school history. We were all famishing and wasted no time in starting to eat. There was a lapse in conversation as we gazed over the crowd. Senator Murphy seemed to stand out as he was gobbling a turkey bone. All of a sudden he stood choking and gasping, “0”. No sooner had he spoken when us rushed BARNEY 0Z1ER. the local mortician. He was just trying to make another killing because business seemed to be dying out. We all finished our meal and sat back to enjoy the entertainment. As the curtain opened two mysterious dancers made an entrance and did a dance for us. After careful observation, 1 knew it was MARTHA BOLSEN AND MARY JANE FLEMING, doing their famous 59th St. Bridge Song. After the act we suddenly heard the sounds of a police whistle and people yelling and screaming. We ran to where we heard the noise and caught a glimpse of State Trooper MARK MITCHELL grabbing WARD CASTEEL by the back of the shirt and throwing him into his police car. When we inquired, we learned that Ward had been running an illegal gambling casino in the back and it had just been raided by state officials. As it was just about time for the dance, we started on our way to JOYCE and AL’s Ball- room which featured Polish entertainment, the headliner was none other than ALLEN PRICE himself. As we were on our way, we passed a fire truck. We saw it pull into the ballroom and the crew carried out a flaming pan of water. Upon inquiring we were told that the chief cook, JAN1S ANDERSON had attached a propane tube to the handle. After all the excitement we went inside and settled down to enjoy an evening of conversation with old friends. The first one 1 talked with was that world famous oceanographer. DEAN COSLOW. As we talked, I learned he had just completed a scientific study of the habitant of the goldfish; but as we were talking, a news bulletin came over the loud speaker indicating that a student group had disappeared in MerrAmac Caverns. There was an intense search led by a guide PATTI REEDY for the group that had strayed away. After this bulletin Dean’s conversation became so detailed that I lost interest and wandered to the other side of the room. I saw a group gathered around the first woman president of the United States, JOYCE WEST. 1 also met her extremely interesting spouse, Abie Loeb. We left and were on our way down BRYANT’S LANE, when the car ahead of me screeched to a stop and the driver jumped out and ran over to a tree. I couldn’t imagine who it was or what he was doing. I then realized it was KENNY JENT, that famous tree surgeon, the maker and breaker of all trees. As I walked over to him I saw him leafing through a forestry book. Someone yelled, “Kenny’s a corker but that tree’s got him stumped.” Everyone unanimously decided to go down to that famous night spot. “The Spider Webb,” which was owned and operated by, you guessed it, THOM WEBB. We arrived at “The Spider Webb” and al- most before we sat down, a shapely blond with dreamy blue eyes and dressed in a black spider costume could not hide BETTY COOK’S identity. She came spinning around through the Webb selling black licorice spiders as souvenirs. Realizing the class was finally altogether, I got up to make my presentation. I congratulated them on achieving the title of The Most Successful Class of the decade. I took great pleasure in announcing an additional award. They were to receive an all expense paid one way trip to New Orleans. During the year we, as Future Homemakers of America, learned many new and interesting ideas about careers. We had speakers speak on Africa, cake decorating. Home Eco- nomics, mental health, beauty culture, and many more. We had such speakers as Mrs. Bruce CondiU, Mrs. Shirley Boddy, and Miss Linda Reedy. During F.H.A. week we gave each of the teachers an apple, the new members gave a skit in assembly and we took our dads to Hezzy’s for a Daddy Date Nite. We had a really “groovy” year. 76 F.F.A. The Lovington Chapter has been engaged in a full schedule of local, sectional, and state activities during the past year. Last spring we spent two nights and two days camping at the Pierre Marquette State Park in south-western Illinois. During the summer, President, John Davis: and other members attended the state convention at Champaign. In September the chapter officers went to the sectional leadership school at Stewardson-Strasburg. We were the host chapter for the sectional livestock show in July, and also the sectional livestock judging contest. Our membership also participated in the state and sectional judging contest and placed well. At the county Land Use School Dean Creviston was high individual with Tony Seelow and Ward Casteel scoring next high individual. We helped with the bicycle safety check last spring. Last fall we had a hamburger fry and attended the Farm Progress Show at Buffalo. Our spring trip took us to the St. Louis area.
