WILLIAM FLAVEL, Treas. Appointed by the Board BOARD OF EDUCATION (Left) MR. DON SMITH MR. LLOYD LONG (Right) MR. WILLIAM DIMOND MR. A. E. BEST SUPERINTENDENT With dignity, friendliness, and sincerity, Mr. Best, our superintendent, has led Lovington Junior-Senior High School to a plane where a higher morale, scholarship, and leadership are taken for granted. His excellent guidance has won for him the respect and admiration of the community, the student body, and the faculty. 5 ELEMENTARY BUILDING Winter reveals every line of the building where we began school as kinder- garten students and com- pleted the sixth grade. In warmer weather the trees shade the spacious playground that serve as a recreational area in the summer. Fall comes and the large maples attract all by their brilliant foliage. BERTHA PING IN RECOGNITION OF A JOB WELL DONE Resigning this year after thirty-one years of teaching. Mrs. Bertha Ping leaves a host of friends and well-wishers. Mrs. Ping began her teaching career in 1926 at the Dehart School in Douglas County. The last fifteen years of her teaching have been in the third grade at the Lovington Elementary School. We offer our Best Wishes to one who has served such an important part in our community. L OVINGTON HIGH OLD MAIN ENTRANCE The town of Lovington is located in a farming community; its most important crops are wheat, corn, and soy beans. Approximately half of our students arrive in school buses. Old Main, built in 1901, became too small to answer the community's needs, so a wing was built on the east to serve as a gym and one on the west to serve as an auditorium. A new gym was constructed in 1956 and the old one remodeled to accom- modate the Home Ec and Commercial Departments. The old assembly hall now houses a new library, Visual Aids, and Science Department. THE GYM LOVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL LOOKING EAST OLD MAN WINTER BEAUTIFIES OLD MAIN The School Day Begins MR. JOHN D. It represented hours of fun as well as work. Deck Smith, wise in math, baseball, and in filling station operations, is not wise about women. Finding himself engaged, he reluctantly abandons college hopes and engineering ambitions at the urging of his fiancee. Dad apparently accepts his deci- sion by leaving Deck in complete charge of the business while Dad and Mom take a little vacation. Chaos follows when business picks up and tourists fill the waiting rooms. In the fall, a program of work is submitted to the State Association outlining the goals set for the year by the chapter. The award is given in recognition of the goals achieved. The Chapter again sponsored and organized a Christmas party for the entire school with the help of the classes and other organizations. Gary Ozier and Mike Wilson attended the State Convention in Champaign and judging teams participated in Land-Use, Grain, Poultry, Dairy, and Live- stock. Mike Wilson will again participate in the Section Public Speaking Contest. The squad won a trophy for placing second in the Moultrie County Track Meet. A new school record in the discus was made by Stan Patrick with a 132 feet 7 inch throw. Chuck” Miller represented our school as one of the outstand- ing trackmen in Central Illinois. He was the Conference, County. Shelbyville Open, and Dis- trict Champion in the high hurdles. He won the Conference and County low hurdles and the Conference 880. He also ran in the state meet and was eliminated in the quar- ter finals at Memorial Stadium on the University of Illinois campus. He broke the old school and Moultrie County record in the low hurdles by running it in 20.2. The Freshman Relay Team placed first in the 440 event at the county meet, winning an- other trophy. A freak storm confined itself to one thing--a tree that appeared to have been gently lifted. It left only a hole. The school colors appeared at the night football games and the marching band put in hours of practice. PASSES After the long winter the blooms of the magnolia tree seemed more beautiful than ever. The two Mike Powells, senior and freshman, are not related. Old Main looks so natural . . . with more snow. The county nurse, Mrs. Julia Dwerldotte, arranged for a new type of TB skin tests (Dr. McLaughlin shown) Paul Ozier arranged for Santa to visit school with the help of Mrs. Homer John- son. He had to substitute for a sleigh for, at that time, there was no snow. A school Christmas party included pie eating contests, races, and many other things!
