Table of Contents Mr. William Dimond Mr. Vade Booker Mr. Don Smith SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE This year's Mirror presents a theme of more than ordinary significance. As you review the many and varied events of the 1961-62 school year, you will have a great- er realization of the planning and efforts that were required to blend and balance the many voices, moods, and rhythms that were everpresent in the setting of this year's composition. As we compare the activities of the Junior High with those of our Senior High students, we observe a slower tempo but a strong desire to gain momentum as the steps on the first few rungs of the imaginary ladder are taken. Solo and group efforts are constantly madeas some degree of success is experienced by participants, spectators, and advisers; all working in harmony. Congratulations to the Senior Class for your determination to reach the top. Whether your high note in satisfaction while attending Lovington Junior-Senior High School was gained through individual achievements, group participation, or through service to others,I am sure that you will always have some fond memories of your high school accomplishments. 5 Superintendent MR. On November 17th, the Senior Class presented a farce comedy under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Thomas. In the story, boys crash a girls slumber party only to find that Mr. Midnight and a ghost were also there. It seems that Rita is having a party to forget Fred, but she and her sister Jane, along with their friends, have their eats stolen by two boys. Fred and his pals dress as ghosts to try to win Rita back. Meanwhile, the maid is trying to quit because of the goings-on. A policeman arrives and there is shooting and Fred s mother arrives to calm the par- ty down. Isn't that money? Wonder what class or organization had concessions? A person must be accurate! Then, at Christmas time, the 7th grades and the 8th grades drew names and exchanged gifts. An all school party was sponsored by the FFA; refreshments were served and games played. There is our yearbook editor (top right) engrossed in bingo. Each year the school Christmas tree is furnished by Mr. Walter Brewer and decorated by the FFA boys. The School Day begins at 8:31 with students assembled on the bleachers. The old auditorium has yielded to progress to be- come new science area and library quarters. Between classes, glimpses into the areas gave assurance that the results would be more than satisfactory. The remodeling was completed several weeks after school started in the fall. Meanwhile the foyer of the gym became an improvised study hall. How nice to be able, at last, to make use of the comforts and conveniences of the new library with its pastel walls and oak shelving. The Seventh Graders (above) tackle geography and arithmetic, respectively. Below, the Eighth Grade students share Science— and Reading. The new science lab is completely equipped and well used. The Girls Athletic Association, better known as G. A. A., is one of the largest clubs in school. Member- ship in this club enables the girls to win school letters by active participation. There is always a good deal of excitement, whether it is during a game of speedball, kickbali, deck tennis, volleyball, or on a hike a- long a country road. One of the biggest events of G. A. A. is the basketball tournment, in which girls from each class form a team to play the other classes. Playdays are also an important part of G. A. A. Loving- ton was represented at the piayday in Sullivan and we will be host to the district playday this spring. The officers for this year are: Karen Brewer, president, Becky Pound, secretary-treasurer, Karen Ascherman and Carol Rickey, points captains, and Ann Foley, press reporter. 74 SEATED: Kirby Fleming, Jim Wagahoft, Tom Winings, D. Each year they award a Tackle Trophy to the football player making the most tackles and they have purchased a set of weights for the PE classes and a charging sled for football. This year they plan to buy a trophy case for the Lobby. To underwrite the cost of their projects, they sponsored a chilli supper and had a carwash on Saturday on the weekend of home coming. The 1962 Mirror Staff could not have completed it without the help of our advisor--Mrs. Ella Stephenson --our photographer, our publisher, and our advertizers. Thanks and best wishes to the real people for whom this book was written and whom it was written about--the students of Lovington Junior-Senior High School.
