Compliments of Me MULLIN' FUNERAL HOME 4 TO THE STUDENTS: The 1956-57 school year has come to a close. Yet the activities and events of the year will live on in the lives of the pupils and the faculty. I hope the seniors will carry with them the principles of ethi- cal character, the desire for a useful career and a determination to succeed. The stature of a school is measured by the students who enter its halls, the quality of work they do while in school, and the success they attain in their careers after leaving the school. And so, to the class of 1957, I say farewell. I hope that you are taking away with you as much as you leave to us, and we know that you are leaving much behind as a contribution to the student body and the seniors of later years. My wish for you is that you cherish the memories of your high school years and may luck be with you when you enter your future careers. To the undergraduates, my hope is that you will do your utmost to uphold the high ideals that have been the guide for most of the students who have passed through the school and may your later years be well spent. The class of 1957. Going back to the beginning year of our career, we recall that we elected the follow- ing officers—President, Colleen McCoy; Vice President, Glenn Newberry; Secretary- Treasurer, Steve Brown; and Reporter, Glenda Gladville. To advise us in our work we selected Miss Goodgion and Mr. Peiffer as sponsors. Jane Cochran represented our class as cheerleader and Mary Jo Davis and Ronald Pound represented us in the Student Council. Our Homecoming King and Queen candidates were Glenda Gladville and Steve Brown. Other activities besides homecoming events included a Pep Dance and a V -Roy Show. The next fall our group again entered L.H.S., this time as Sophomores. Leaders elect- ed were: President, Harold Phelps; Vice President, Jane Cochran; Secretary-Treas- urer, Mary Jo Davis; Reporter, Sue Day. Miss Falls and Mr. Root served as sponsors Student Council members were Charlene Dyer and Ronald Pound. Jane Cocliran was a- gain elected cheerleader. Queen and King candidates for Homecoming were Mary Jo Davis and Wayne Brown. We sponsored the Rhythm Riders and a St. Patrick's Day Dance as class projects. Back once again in the fall of 1955, our Junior officers were: President, Ronald Pound; Vice President, Mary Jo Davis; Secretary-Treasurer, Jane Cochran; Reporter, Danny Hines. We chose Mrs. Harden and Mr. Brauer as class sponsors. Sue Day and Ronald Pound represented us in the Student Council and Jane Cochran was again the cheer- leader from our class. Homecoming was a big event for us since we won first prize on both our window and float and our queen candidate, Jane Cochran, was crowned Queen. Activities included caring for the pop and candy machines, selling Christmas cards, sponsoring stand at games, and the Class Play, Meet Me in St. Louis. We alsc sponsored the annual Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom at The Cedar Knolls Supper Club in De- catur on May 25th, using the theme— Moonlight and Roses.” 1957—Already! As Seniors we elected Harold Phelps as President; Sue Day, Vice President; Glenda Gladville, Secretary-Treasurer; and Linda Hamilton, Reporter. A- gain Mrs. Harden and Mr. Brauer worked with us as class sponsors to help us in all of our activities. Mary Jo Davis and Harold Phelps were members of the Student Coun- cil and Jane Cochran served her 4th year as cheerleader. Sue Day, our Class's queen candidate, was elected queen of the Homecoming festivities. Mary Jo Davis was e- lected to receive the DAR Award. Projects were sponsored to help finance our Senior Trip included Magazine Sale, Brown Bombers Basketball Game, Concession stand at games, Wrestling Match, and the Class Play, The Man Who Came to Dinner under the direction of Mrs. Harden. As we begin to prepare to leave L.H.S. this Spring, we realize that we will no longer be working together as a class but each of us will have our own life to live. But even through the best of success we will never forget our happy years at L.H.S. 12 Senior Class Officers LEFT to RIGHT: Harold Hielps, Pres.; Sue Day, Secretary; Glenda Gladville, Treas.; Linda Hamilton, Reporter. We made history that year by getting second place with our float in the Homecoming Parade and third place with our window. Then, too, Calvin Brosam, our candidate for Homecoming King, was crowned THE KING I Our class sponsors were Mr. Floyd Adair and Mr. Ralph Goodwin. Marcia Bailey was selected to represent us as Cheerleader and Martha Rainey as Student Council representative and they have contin- ued in the same office. Bob McCoy was Freshman Student Council member; Calvin Brosam was Sophomore; and Dean Howard is now our Junior member. During our Sophomore year, our sponsors were Mrs. Elizabeth Pedro and Mrs. Violet Long. Bob McCoy was president; Shirley Rochat, vice-president; Shirley Fair, secretary-treasurer; and Rowena Newberry, reporter. To add to our bank account, we sold candy and had sock hops. Now we are upperclassmen and our sponsors are Mrs. Ella Stephenson and Mr. Lawrence Allen. For our money making projects we have had the respon- sibility of the vending machines and have sold refreshments at some of the games. We had one sock hop. Our class play, The Little Dog Laughed was fun. It was directed by Mrs. Stephenson. Because of the shortage of our number. Four of the girls had double roles. Floyd Woods and Leroy Kearney took care of the scenery and sound effects. Ours was perhaps the last play to be given in the old auditorium and we were proud of our work. Next year . . . We made some failures but have profited from them and are proud of our work for this year. The float for the homecoming parade was the first of our Fresh- man failures. Our idea, The Sixty-four Thousand Dollar Question , was good but difficulties began. When we finally had it ready and took it from the building where it had been assemblied, a strong wind blew the whole thing awayl We had many good ideas but failed to work to back up those ideas. We scheduled a Work Day and each of us was to donate our earnings to the class treasury. Only one person worked—that was Judy Pound who made two dollars the night before by baby-sitting. We ended our first year with seven dollars in the treasury. This year we have proved that we can work and have a nice little bank account to show for it. We have made and sold candy; sold refreshments at football and basketball games; had sock hops; and sponsored V-Roy, the Magician. Last year our sponsors were Mrs. Dorothy Donaldson and Mr. Har- old Elliott. This year we have Mrs. Janet Hunt and Mr. Elliot. We have tried to include, in it, those things which help to make your memories of Lov- ington High rrlore vivid and lasting. We have enjoyed the work and sincerely thank everyone who helped us in any way. We have learned that yearbooks are expensive productions and that advertising is the backbone of the work. Although funds were raised in various other ways, we depended on advertising as the greatest source of our funds. STANDING: Mr. Root, Roger Blankenship, Kenny Lowder, Marvin Stovall, Dave Foster, Bob McCoy, Charles Huffman, Rus- sell Grant, (Mgr.). The Lovington Panthers of 1956-57 had a pretty successful record considering the inexperience of the person- nel. This year's team had no holdover regulars; Steve Brown and Harold Phelps being the only ones with experience. Realizing this, the boys selected them as co-captains to lead the team. Ten boys won varsity letters. Senior players were: Harold Phelps, Raymond Quick, Ronald Stinson, Danny Hines; Sophomores, Tom Brewer, Ronnie Dycus, Pete Foster, Bob Wood; and Freshman. Homer Butler. Un- derclassmen were used regularly with the A Squad. Tom Brewer, Pete Foster, Ronnie Dycus, Bob Wood, and Homer Butler saw action frequently, with Brewer and Foster playing regularly. This experience should be of great value to next year's team. Tom Brewer was selected by his team-mates to receive the Country Charm Most Valuable Player Award. This was quite an honor to bestow upon Tom as he is only a Sophomore. Harold Phelps won the Glancy Brothers Free Throw Award. Harold shot a respectable IVlo. No captains were elected for next year. The team voted to elect honorary captains at the end of the season. Prospects for next year look very good although we lose some good players by graduation. Five Lettermen will be returning as well as the B Squad to form the nucleus of the 1957-58 cage team. Dean Howard played the part of the father, Mr. Huntington, and Martha Rainey played the mother, Mrs. Huntington. Laurie, the daughter (Marcia Bailey) is home for the summer after two years of college. Her brother, Wally (Bob McCoy) is a well adjusted high student. By the time Mrs. Huntington arrives, her guests are gone. Horatio P.
