Certainly each of us remembers the childhood amazement of dash- ing precipitously along the ocean's edge through perfect expanses of sandy beaches only to turn around laughing as we watched the tide gobble up every mark of our existence. Yet, as we grew up, the run slowed to a walk and the wonder we had always seen at the disappearance of our lone footprints turned to a sense of confusion. No two people chose to face the challenge of the crashing waves in the same way. Some people learned to walk just far enough out of the tide's reach to escape its destruction. Others thought maybe if they left each footprint as deeply embedded in the sand as they possibly could it would remain unchanged forever. And the rest? Maybe they learned just not to care as they strode bravely through the water's edge just as they had always done. So now we find ourselves as near-adults, ready to stride once again across a smooth, unbroken, solitary beach. There is no path, no absolute right direction, and it seems at this point there is only instinct: our own. And so as we prepare ourselves and our lives, we look behind at the uncertain course of our past and ahead at the future, and as we step out, we make those footprints in the sand which will last an eternity. by Nicole Lllbrich
