URRENTEVEVTS .1 fr '9? rv i125: LOHIAN LOVELAND HURST HIGH SCHOOL Introduction Facuny Classes Clubs Sports Activities Advertisements Built in 1888 on the East Loveland hill, this school pictured above replaced an earlier building which had been completely destroyed by fire. Loveland School Building was in use as a school and as a community gathering place until it was torn down in 1964 Can you imagine sitting on a split log bench in front of the warm fireplace of an old white pitiared house? Or learning American History in a log cabin? The students of Loveland's earliest schools learned their reading, writing, and arithmetic in places like these. The first classes were held in peoples' homes, but later special schools were built. The first graduating class, in 1881, had only one member, Evelyn Hawley. One hundred and four years later Loveland High School says goodbye to another Senior class, and they in turn greet history in the making. Each of us has the ability to shape our own life, and therefore to shape our history. The conditions that affect the way we live change with the times, and it is our ability to change with them that determines our success or failure. Each one of us is different; some excell in sports, some in academics, and some in the arts, but we all share at least one thing: the ability to learn. 9.: m .. mg a .4 on The landmark water tower on West Loveland ht was dismantled in 1977. This buniding on West Lovetand htii housed the livst high school in Loveland. Built in 1890 this building served as the city buulding and tire house until it burned down in 1972, Mr Ogg tprincipalt, Mr. Hurst tsupenntendenlt and Mr. Koehl tasetstant principalt surveyed the progress on the addition la the high school, Aerial vtew oi the high school on Lebanon Road, The Hood of 1913 came to the steps at the band stand and the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Co. buiidtngi A B. Brook's Boysl Brigade and Drill Team posed tor a picture on July 4. 1696 The bridge over the Liltle Miami Ftiver was replaced in the late 1970's. We learn from experience, not just our own personal experiences, but also the experiences of those before ust The mistakes of our ancestors caution us, and their successes inspire us. One day, we will be the ones that caution and inspire future generations. We will be the heroes, the figures in history that others learn from. As for now we can only live, and learn, and do our best. We determine our own futures through our actions, and must consider their consequences in our own lives and the lives of others. As the graduating class moves on, the members will look back at their own personal memories and ahead to the rest of their lives. They now begin a new phase of a great adventure. They. and the classes after them, will determine the future, and the history of their world. They may remember their Senior Trip tto Washington DC. maybeLgehMgthmrcmssnngsthdr Junior year, and gym classes that separated boys and girls! Their prom was probably held in the gym, and they never went out to a fancy dinner before a dance. They may have had the honor of receiving a gold, silver, or bronze Scholarship pin, as there was no National Honor Society. Ask them what they left in their last will and testament. or what the Class Prophecy had in store for them. ClubSIGQ YEARBOOK STAFF Putting together a yearbook takes a lot of time. care, dedication, and patience. The students who worked on the 1985 LOHIAN exemplified the qualities of all the yearbook workers of the past and they have created a book for you which will be enjoyed and cherished The 1985 staff included: L -David Housman and Amy Burton: 0 - Kristen Parr and Jerry Burns; H-Melinda Merrill and Lori Basham; I e Shawn Conlon and Missy Brown; A eCheryl Wiegand and Terri Theiss: N - Laura Williams, Mark Volkman and Jenny Simonst Amy Burton, 3 third generation graduate of Loveland High School, was our artist and she wrote the copy at both the begin- ning and the ending of the book. She also ran errands, counted money and per- formed any other tasks asked of her. Record sales were ably handled by John Camels. Scott Gordon, and David Housman who devoted time and energy to the task of convincing students of their need to order an '85 LOHIAN 70 ICiubs Missy Brown not only took and developed pictures which appear in the book, but she worked on various sections, wrote copy. ran errands, and helped encourage good work and good coverage. Terri Theiss and Cheryl Wiegand who was busy typing when this picture was Iakeni typed and typed and brought or der out of the chaos handed to them. Hours of research, interviewing and delving into oid records, books and papers on the part of these five people resulted in a yearbook which ceiebrated the past as well as documented the present, Amy Burton studied the school sytem; Melinda Merritt whose grandmother and great grandmother both attended Loveland schools. researched the iacuity and what happened at the high schooi through the years; Mark Volk- man examined sports records and old trophies in his search for sports' history; Laura Wii'liams. whose parents attended school together at Lo- veland, became our expert on clubs and assort- ed trivia; and Terri Thei'Ss charted the deveiop- merit of commerciai Loveland. The class section was produced by Sophomore assistant Kristen Parr, Terri Theiss, Cheryl Wiegand, Missy Brown. Mark Volkman, and Jenny Simone who is missing ttom the picture because she had to check on the spelling of their names. f t t ,2 til Sports were covered and organized in an effective presentation by Kristen Parr, Shawn Conlon, Cheryl Wiegand, Dave Housman, Mark Volkman, Lori Basham, and Melinda Merrill. The Loveland Scholar was first published in 1926 as a quarterly review of school news and literary material. In 1928-29 an arrangement was made with the 'tLoveiand Hetaid to print the material and 'The Loveland Scholar't became an annual production. The early voiurnes included jokes. funny things said by students and faculty members, ctass histories, caiendars of events, and a dedication in 1931 the book had its first hard covers The 1934 edition called The Eddas Silhouette cost $150. The following year the book was caited A spirai bound edition in 1939 introduced the name LOHiAN which has been continued to this day. Noted in the book is the following: ' We. the Senior Class of 1939, hope that you will Eike the name we have setected for our yearbook. and that you will honOr and revere its name in the years to come. This name represents Loyaity, Opportunity. Honor, integrity, Ambition, and Notabiiity, Combining the first syllables of Lovefand High Annual we formed the word LOHiAN. Although there was a smalE lumber mtli in operae tion during the 182013, businessiin Loveland is generally thought to have begun in 1854 when James Loveiand, the areas first shopkeeper and postmaster. Opened his general store. During the 1860's and 7018 Loveland flourished as a resort area: Many people from Cincinnati got away from Cincinnati's heat and bustle by retreating to their summer homes hefe along the banks of the river or to the Riverside Hotei located at the corner of Jackson iWest Lovelandi and Riverside Avenues. Business here continued to expand in the area of old Loveland which was incorporated as a vit- Eage in 1876. Then in 1913 the great flood changed the situation and the direction of growth. During this catastrophe many businesses lost stock, equipment. and buildings. As a result of this natural disaster. businesses began the shift over the bridge to the area which is now West Love- land. Through the 1920's Loveland was a booming town. Many businesses were expanding their operations. The Depression of the 19303 did not affect the iittie town a? first, but eventually it was riddled with unemployment and business deSpair. However. upon eniering the 405 business rebcunded. Loveland, Ohio, is now a city of 9,106 citizens. It has six parks, five major subdivisions, and two shopping malls. Industry is light. The business district is made up of over 210 small businesses such as hardware stores, hairdressers. pizzerias, grocers, and specialservice shops. These businesses reflect, in part. Iocai history. Some have been here over 100 years, others Fess than ten. but each adds to this community a new facet and participant. 139 Our experiences at Loveland High School are over. If this year's class has left a mark on the school. let us hope that it is one that is good enough to serve as a guidepost for the next classes. As we cross the threshold between yesterday and tomorrow. take time to look back and treasure the moments. Then move ahead into the new world where we will begin a new chapter in the history books that our children will someay study.
