Prologue Autumn, . . . within its frosty grasp lies the commencement of another school-year. Football games, the Homecoming Dance, soccer matches, . . . these are the elements of autumn . . . Britain has produced a remarkable number of extraordinarily gifted multi-disciplinary scientists and scholars who are often referred to as ' 'polymaths. Bertrand Russell, a recent member of this group, comments that the development of such gifted individuals requires a childhood and teen environment in which there is little or no pressure for conformity1 a time in which the child can develop and pursue his or her interests no matter how unusual or seemingly bizarre . Because of the strong pressures for social conformity both by the government and peer groups of the United States and most other developed nations, these countries are producing proportionally fewer polymaths. Particularly in today's world, when such numerous and intricate problems face the human species, the development of broad, powerful, original thinking is a necessity. ' 'We do not live in traditional and static societies. But our govemmens, in resisting change, act as if we did, ' ' writes author scienu'st Carl Sagan. The future belongs to those societies who choose to encourage originality and diversity rather than conformity. Winter , . . . students plod slowly through homework as flakes outside drift delicately downward. Basketball games, the Christmas Dance, wrestling matches, . . . these are the elements of winter . . . As was mentioned above, the problems and difficulties which currently plague mankind are quite numerous . In the United States alone , we are beset by moral decay and corruption . Increasing numbers of our people display apathy andt or ignorance . Our environments, both urban and rural, are quickly being destroyed by noxious pollutants. Americans, as a whole, do not eat properly nor receive adequate exer- cise . The typical American additionally abuses his body by daily ingesting a wide spectrum of harmful drugs, including everything from nicotine and refined sugar to Valium and other tranquilizers. Yet all these difficulties collectively do not engender as much harm as does America's number one evil: The tendency of our people to ignore or disregard the truths facing them. Indeed, the first step in the solution of any problem is recognition and acceptance of that problem . If we can hope to survive as a society, or indeed, as a species, we must develop and encourage citizens who not only are capable of displaying the originality mentioned before-hand, but also citizens who possess the qualities of integrity and determination. Spring, . . . the countryside bursts forth from its winter dormancy with a festive celebration of green. Track meets and baseball games, the Prom and graduation, . . . these are the elements of spring . . . As the departing senior class members reflect on four years of high school, they must also look ahead to future years. And as they prepare to enter the mainstream of society, they must closely examine and reassess their options and goals. Whatever course each senior decides to choose at the conclusion of this last year of Loveland Hurst High School, may he pursue it with originality, integrity, and determination. For these are the best qualities which he can offer society. And indeed, these elements are the most important qualities that each junior, sophomore, and freshman can offer in this year and in years to come. C. William O'Neill, former Governor of Ohio, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, once said that he was proud to consider himself of third importance: because first in his mind came God, and second came his family. Whether one looks upon the term ' 'family' ' to denote only the closest of relatives, all Americans, mankind in general, or even all living creatures of earth; I hope that everyone can offer that ' 'family meaningful contributions for the rest of his life . And I also hope that everyone will do so with the originality, integrity, and determination which will be so important to the future of all, by Brent Lautenschlegar
