LOHIAN LOVELAND, OHIO 1978 m , E373 77 y 7 There exists a new birth, a new beginning as the scrawny eaglet peers from the jagged crack in his shell; and already he has begun to change . . . Similarily we were given a new birth, a new beginning, as we entered high school; terrified of being scrawny, hidden so as to remain unseen. But as the downy eaglet, we too had begun to change. The eaglet emerges from its shell, curiously observing the changing world around him, yet slow to recognize a transformation occuring within himself. For by now, brown plumage has replaced his wooly down, his talons flex and clasp, flex and clasp; the eagle stands erect . . . Over the past years, we also have emerged, to discover the changing world, to be aware . However, as the eaglet, we were the last to understand our own transformation. It was a subtle and gradual change, as confidence strengthened our voices, poise heightened our stature , and wisdom was gained through our experiences; it was a change which could not be reflected in any mirror, nor transcribed on any parchment. The eaglet has emerged an eagle; we have emerged as adults. As the eagle ages, his nest is repadded With fresh grass and twigs to accommodate his needs; strengthened, for he is stronger, enlarged, for his expanse is broader, improved, for the following years . For the same reasons, Loveland Hurst High School has been under construction, expansion and change in order to better accommodate its students. An extensive library, child development department and guidance office have been added. An auditorium has been added and the kitchen enlarged so as to provide more space for the school's growing number of students. With these changes, come myriad possibilities. The eagle flaps his Wings and struts in the nest, ready to fly. He rises with a stretch, extending each perfect wing in turn . . . then with breathtaking suddenness he is airborne, soaring tirelessly above the tall trees, independent and free . Finally, we are seniors, preparing to leave our own nests, to fly as the eagle flies, independent and free. As graduation arrives, we look back upon our change and we understand . . . Life is new beginnings, growing and maturing, but more importantly life is change, for without change, there is no growing; Without growing, there is no living; without living, there is no life. by Cheryl Grischy - f w; . n: :JI D U k Administration EDUCATION HAS FOR ITS OBJECT THE FORIVIATION OF CHARACTER. We crossed over the bridge and passed through opened doom, setting a procedure which would be continued daily. However, with each crossing, with each opened door, time passed as we gradually constructed the 1977-78 school year, building higher and higher until all time was behind us; we reached the top. gag, ,, 5:. Kevin Wolbers won the ' 'Leg's Contest' ' sponsored by the Freshmen. Being conscious of equal rights, each class presented its own squad of male cheerleaders. The Juniors received the honor of being the most vivacious, agile and stunning in appearance. Competition continued between the classes with an exceptionally exciting year of building Homecoming floats, which centered around the theme of Songs' ' . 'I'he Freshman captured first with their portrayal of ' 'Rocky' ' . The seniors followed in second with Could It Be Magic? Third was won by the sophomores with ' 'Anu'cipation' ' . Juniors came in fourth with ' 'Looks Like We Made It. Following the float contest, the 1977-78 Homecoming Queen was crowned. Candidates were Sherri Eckert, Carol Grainger, Deanna Hardwick, Amy Lannom, Julie Moldenhauer, and Kim Niemi. The excitement built up until Julie Moldenhauer was named this year's Homecoming Queen. Last year's Queen, Karen Igo, relinquished her crown and presented Julie with roses. Finishing touches made the evening complete with a 29-20 victory over Deer Park. The Following night, Oct. 1 , the Homecoming dance, sponsored by the Student Council and Senior Class, was held in the high school dining room. The main event was the crowning of Tim Taylor as Homecoming King. The other candidates included Chris Calcaterra, Joe Hope, Tony King, Ron Minton, and Ron Troyan. 104 Though the school year was constructed around that which the students regarded as work, there were still times of laughter, times of sharing and times of fun. One such time was Halloween when classes were visited by ghouls and goblins, rustlers and robots - all encountexs of the third kind. The next unusual visitor to our school appeared' ' in the form of an invisible rabbit when the Drama Club presented HARVEY on November 10 and 12. The audience became enchanted and the auditorium resounded with laughter, for who could help but fall in love with a gigantic rabbit as debonair as Harvey, even if he was invisible! 107 December arrived . . . cold and brisk on the outside, but warm and cuddly on the inside . Our It's Academic Team-captain Gerri Sutton, Angela Allen, Kevin Benton, and alternate Steve Cutter-appeared on Channel 48. The Senior Class held its second annual tum- about ChrisUnas dance on Dec. 17. Candidates for Mr. and Miss Claus were Lynda Moldenhauer, and Andy Wilma, Lisa Bales and Chris Vinson, Sharon Mikula and Andy Grethel, and Deanna Hardwick and Tim Taylor. Deanna and Tim won, receiving Christnas caps and giant candy canes which should last them Lmtil next season! The LHHS Drama Club and Music Department presented Joy on Dec. 19 in celebration of the coming holidays, while Operation Jinglebells spread good cheer throughout the community. Then the balls were empty for Christmas vacation had arrived. As 1977 ticked away its last remaining seconds, we looked with eagerness towards the new year and what it would bring. Classes went back in session, however, not to stay opened for long, as it began to snow and snow and snow! Numerous snow days and times delays put a halt in the school year. leaving everything in shambles. However, classes resumed as soon as possible, picking up the pieces where they had left off , and the year was back in full swing. Books were dug out of the bottoms of lockers as everyone prepared for semester exams . Extra curricular activities provided a respite from the monotony of those dreary days. Sock hops sponsored by NHHS followed weekend basketball games. The Key Club presented a successful Sweethearts' Ball on February 11 , in celebration of Saint Valentine's Day. Those crowned Sweethearts were juniors Sharon Milcula and Craig Calcaterra. Pep assemblies provide flair as the Seniors celebrated Senior Week, underclassmen bowed low in ' 'Oh Queen, Oh Queen, ' ' and Tommy Lang was Loveland's winner of the ' 'Sure Shot contest with the most number of baskets . and a time to dream. ix 114 Spring is a time for dreams to come true; a time for visions to near completion; 3 time for writing love letters in the sand. Athletes and cheerleaders were recognized for their dedication and ability during the Winter Sports Awards Night on April 1 . Eight seniors, accompanied by Mr. Dickmann, attended breakfast at Convention Center in order to hear Henry Kissinger speak. Mr. Herbold took four science students to Ohio State University for Engineer's Day. Annuals went on sale . The Drama Club presented their own version of Spring' ' at the Heritage Fair and for the school during lunch. Seniors suffered through projects with hope that Graduation would soon arrive . 11S 116 We reluctantly bid farewell to old time friends as they walked out the door in search of their own vocation. Some students chose to attend Live Oaks; while others went to Scarlet Oaks. They studied horticulture, broadcasting, or graphics. They spent their days rebuilding engines, typing dictation, or caring for animals. Having held Baccalaureate on the previous Sunday, the Class of 1978 reunited on Wednesday, May 31 , for its last official time together, clad in shades of powder and navy blue caps and gowns . As we walked down to the processional of Pomp and Circumstance, blinldng back the tears and steadying the shaking arm, our graduation and commencement began. The Invocation was given by Father Joseph Robinson, followed with opening remarks by Mr. Ron DeWitt and the Senior Class Profile by Dr. Charles Waple. The Commencement Address was delivered by Mr. Gerald N. Springer, Mayor of Cincinnati. Cheryl Grischy and Stephen Cutter were recognized as the Valedictorian and Salutatorian , respectively .
