LOVELAND For several years Loveland has tried to pass a bond issue for the erection of a new school building. The question of a suitable sight has been one of the main obstacles. Finally, in the course of a few years, the Board of Education with the cooperation of the local citizens selected a site which ap- pealed to them. lt comprised twenty-three acres surrounded by beautiful trees and hills, located on the Loveland-Madeira Road just outside of the corporation line. In the spring of l94l the bond issue was again to be voted on. The children were so thrilled in the expectation of a new school that they canvassed Loveland, carrying signs urging everyone to vote yes As a result of the efforts put forth by everyone, the bond CHEMISTB Betty Hatcher, Burton, Warren Charles Thzeken, Catherine Steele, George ham, Raphael BUILDS issue passed. Soon after, various blueprints were submitted for the construction. The dedication was scheduled for Satur- day, December 6, at two o'clock. At this time the large auditorium was filled with citizens of Loveland and of surrounding communities. Superintendent Iudson E. Sprinkle, Chairman of the dedication service, presented the pub- lic an interesting program, opened by the entire audience singing America accom- panied by the school band. This was fol- lowed by the invocation by Reverend Gowdy. The band, directed by Mr. Glenden Craggs, then played an overture The Gypsy Festi- val. Hon. Iames G. Stewart, Mayor of Cin- cinnati, gave the dedicatory address. Raphael Smith sang Evening Star, followed by re- l LIBRARY M a r y Q Gentry, William Koenig. Y , Mrs hieken OFFICE PRACTICE LOVELANITS FUTURE marks by the architect, Mr. George Walker. Mr. Leonard P. Bunnell, President of School Board, presented the new school to the pa- trons ot Loveland School District. Mr. B. A. lohnson, President ot the P.fT. A. gave the response to the presentation. This was tol- lowed by a selection by the A Cappella Choir, directed by Miss Margaret Beaver. Be- marks were then made by Mr. O. H. Bennett, Superintendent ot Hamilton County Schools and by a representative of the State Depart- ment. Norma Davis then sang Villanelle accompanied by Amelita Meier on the flute and Miss Margery Pope on the piano, tol- lowed by an address by Dr. H. F. Vallance ot the Department ot Education oi Miami Uni- versity. The school band then played another number followed by the presentation ot the flag by the Daughters of America. Miss Marf qery Pope played a piano solo Romance The memorable dedication was ended by the he-nediction by Reverend Main. The architectural work was planned by Vfalker, Norwich, and Templin Company. The contractors were the Knowlton Con- struction Company, the Bacon dl Sanders Plumbing Company, The Gilbert P. Mursinna Heating Company, and The Keasley Electric Company. We also extend our thanks to Superin- tendent ludson E. Sprinkle and the members ot the school board tor their cooperation in 'naking possible this lovely building. Roma 0 gducafion H. l. Montgomery Roy Malott -k if Page 8 v ADMINISTRATION The faculty of the Loveland High School is to be congratulated upon the work accomplished in the last tew years. The pupils and teachers are proud of the new building and wish to thank the good people of Loveland for this gitt. Even under the war strain we are proud of the boys and girls in their conduct and their response to the teaching and things that are not pleas- ant to endure. Household arts is one of the bright spots with Miss Marshall as leader. Library and study hall are quite complete and are enjoyed by all. Physical education, under the direction oi Mr. Kauber and Miss Lewis. in the wonderful gymnasium, makes school much more pleas- ant than the former set-up on the hill. English is under the guidance ot Mrs. Harsha, Miss Pope, and Miss Dix- son, who are doing a fine piece ot work. Latin is still quite popular under Miss Templin. We regret very much the resignation ot Mrs. Gladys Gentry, one of the finest teachers with whom we have come in contact in our experience. Mrs. Gentry is succeeded by Mr. Blake, who has spent some tirne studying languages in Europe. Science has made quite a change in the new set-up: we regret that Mr. Steele will not be with us next year. Gur music is superb under Miss Beaver and Mr. Craggs, with five superior groups going to state. The cornrnercial department is tops in the new home, and everyone participating enjoys the work. aculfil M. E. BANTA B.S. in Ed., Wilmington, Social Science: Mathematics. FOOTBALL With the exception of two or three boys this year's football team had very little exper- ience, while most of the county schools had several of their stars back from last year. Contrary to popular opinion, the boys maintained their pep and spirit through- out the season. ln fact, as the season prog- ressed more and more young boys came out who really were interested in a future team. lt is hoped that this attitude will remain. None of the boys will be lost by graduation. So it no one drops out of school the squad should begin next year Where it left off last fall and that should, indeed, be very encouraging. Although no games were won this year, many of them were close, and all of them were lost because of two reasons: 1. Lack of experience and 2. Lack of reserve power. Both of these deficiencies should be pretty well taken care of for next year. ir if Paqe 24 There is on point that should be discuss- ed here. Usually, only enough boys turn out who think they can make the team. That, of course, is erroneous thinking. How does a person know before he comes out for a sport Whether or not he will like the sport or make the team? To have a winning team Loveland High boys must turn out thirty strong and must be in excellent physical condition, which means training throughout the whole year. To attain this goal, every boy and girl in school, all the parents and teachers must help. Everyone must do something about it. The schedule and results of games were: Loveland. .... .16 Sharonville 27 Loveland 20 Anderson .. 28 Loveland . . 19 Plainville 45 Loveland .. 36 Terrace Park .. 42 Loveland . 21 Deer Park 38 Loveland .. U28 Madeira , 42 BASKETBALL Loveland's success in basketball was a trifle better than in football. lt was evident from the very beginning of basketball prac- iice that the boys had not developed a shooting eye , which, of course, can be ex- plained by the tact that they did not have access to a gymnasium last year. ln most cases it takes at least three years to develop that eye tor the basket. Although the high school boys did not win many games there were nevertheless many bright spots. For instance, the defense in most cases was plenty good. In this mod- ern game ot basketball almost all games should be won when the opponents score less than thirty points. The varsity is losing tive ot the ten men, and with these tive men goes all the height. Unless the younger boys grow like weeds over the summer months, Loveland High will have to depend on a speedy team next year. The reserve team started slowly, losing the first tew games. But they soon found the will and determination to get out there and tight and win. When they lost, it was because they lacked height and the ability to shoot, although the latter shoot-coming was steadily improving. On this reserve team we had tive Sopho- mores and five Freshmen. The l-li-Y organization of Loveland was founded in nineteen thirty-nine. This year the club continued its good work. The Hi-Y creed calls for a better Christian World in which we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. The Hi-Y works in conjunction with Y. M. C. A. and is a na- tional organization. This year's club was composed of nine members plus our three adult advisors. The meetings were both interesting and enter- taining. We are planning next year's club as a better and for a larger one. GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserve club of our high school has been carrying out, to the best of its ability, the purpose of the international club. This purpose is To find and to give the best , the slogan is To face life squarely. We have carried out in our meetings the symbols of the club-the development of health, mind, and spirit. The meetings have been held every two weeks after school in the school building or at one of the girl's homes. The presiding of- ficers of these meetings are Marilyn Harsha, president: Loraine Gilmer, vice president: Luella Thieken, secretary: and lane Roberts, treasurer.
