The float building is a real experience. Ueff Korsmo? The homecoming crowd should be more than cheer- leaders, band, drill team, and a handful of kids from each class. CKathy Frego? lVlayer's boys played a good game even though they Iost. CTerry Quirin? VVe have more activities in one week than we have in three months. lIVlary Clare Baldus? Can't wait til next year! llVlary Lindberg? 17 UNDEFEATED NETTERS ALMOST TAKE STATE Nine girls, an eager coach and a tennis court produced an almost championship tennis team last fall. The girls' team had its first year of play at LHS in '74. Undefeated in all its meets, the team worked out every day getting ready for State. But afirst place title was just out of reach. Commented Coach Sherman, We were so close to being the State champs I almost cried! With no seniors on any of the top four teams, next year could pose even more of a challenge. Hopefully, we can schedule more Big Nine Conference schools. As of right now we need competition on a weekly basis. We have a lot of talented, hard working athletes, a real coach's dream! Next year, without a doubt, the second place State team will be back for another season of smashing lobs, service aces and aggravating drop shots. -Sara Kelly Sue Carpenter Sharon Kiely 18 Kathy Lee Lisa Kearns l ' Q A S l 5 Betty Sue Horan Julie Macken 19 Peggy Kelly Sara Kelly We don't know what Your destiny will be, but one thing we know. The Eagle straightened out its wings this yearand flewweekly offthe press and into the hands of some three hundred students and faculty. The Eagle has taken every form the mimeograph could produce with some astonishing results. Dave Kortz and Henry Bromelkamp ran the press while Cheryl Rockenbach lent a helping hand. All three were under the guiding e e of Sister Diane who had weekly nervous breakdxbwns. Every Friday three familiar voices could be heard in Room 212. Voice 1--Let's see. We have two hours to get it started and finished. Voice 2--No, only one hour. Today we have short- ened mods. Voice 3--But how far can we stretch one advertise- ment for a bake sale? Voice 1--Oh, about two pages. Despite these setbacks, The Eagle was always published. In between classes and over lunch, with the same problem each week: where to find some articles to print. Although this problem will most likely never be solved, creditgoesto the people ofL.H.S. fortheir very slow but evergrowing support of The Eagle . YEARBOOK PUBLISHES 1974 EDITION 1 . Three starters from last year's state champion team seemed to promise Coach Jerry Fogarty an oth e r successful year. After racking up several difficult victories the Eagles finally fell to Benilde. They never really recovered after that and they began to fall behind the other CCC contenders. Lourdes ended its CCC play in sixth place. However LHS did pick up for the tour- naments. Eagles provided easy wins over Edgerton Southwest Christian and Sleepy Eye St. lVlarys. Then came the Region 6 championship game against Austin Pacelli. LHS and Pacelli fans came out in full force. The Lourdes Band and fans out-yelled the green to put the Eagles in the state tournament for the second consecutive year. LHS was riding high as it defeated St. John Prep and lVlankato Loyola in the opening and semi-final rounds. Now the stage was set for the state championship bat- tle. St. Paul Cretin was the definite favorite for the title. It had finished in first place in the CCC and had played a tight disciplined brand of basketball. LHS managed to stay with C reti n all the way up until the opening minutes of the second half. From then on it was all Cretin. Later, Eagle Coach Jerry Fogarty took the blame for the loss. But LHS fans and players had nothing but praise for the Coach who had taken them to two state championship games in two years. Dan Pesch and Paul Theobald 1. During their third year as a team the girls con- tinued a winning streak thatended in a Lourdes record of 37 straight games. The team was un- defeated in its regular season and fell only to women referees and the illegitimate incorpora- tion of ABA rules at the first official state in- dependant girls basketball tournament. This season may have ended on adisappointing note, but the team vows to get revenge next year! When asked to comment on this year's season, lVlr. Exultation within the players and fans when the pucksters became the first Rochester hockey team in 26 years to reach a state tourna- ment. Excitement was brewing in the crowd as the Eagles went into yet another overtime against St, Bernards, Dis- gust was evident in the painful loss against Blake in the State Tourney, The Eagles, under new coach Marv Peters, had a right to be optimistic this season, They had a powerful group of seniors, some hard hitting, such as Bruce Stolp and some high scoring, such as Tim Kelley, LHS started the season with a hard loss to Albert Lea. Af- ter a few mediocre games, the pucksters bounced back with a powerful win over Brady, 5-2, This, according to Coach Peters, was one of the best efforts up to that point in the season. The Eagles after two well-played loses to Hill-Nlurray and Cretin went into the Christmas layoff, Lourdes started w e I I after the rest when they defeated Rosemount 6-5. January was a winning month, the Eagles compiled a 3-2 record. From February 8-16 the Eagles played seven games. It was a tough, grueling eight days, but the team came out on top with a 4-3 record, LHS now faced regional tournaments, The pucksters were to skate against an old foe, Shattuck. The game was a thriller, with four minutes and four seconds left Mark Quirin, assisted by Tim Kelley, made a perfect goal. The Eagles and four busloads of fans went to state tourna- ment where some people said they didn't belong. The pucksters sought to prove these critics wrong, but were unable to do so in a crushing loss to Blake, 12-1. In the second round, Lourdes met a strong Duluth-Cathedral, The Eagles played gallantly but suffered a hard defeat of 3-1, The pucksters finished with a respectable 13-10-1 record and a better than average record in the tough Central Catholic Conference, they came a long way since their first season four years ago. Tom Wolf and Tom Nobrega Kelley Only LHS Skater On All-CCC Tim Kelley has led the hockey team in scoring since his freshman year. This year he broke the Rochester scoring record in prep hockey with 111 points over four years. Kelley scored 69 career goals and 61 assists for 130 points. WRESTLI G TEAM GN UPSWI 5 SUCCESS SMELLS VERY SWEET Two seasons ago, the wrestling team was the incarnation of defeat. It was a team steeped in a long tradition of loosing, and it continued the practice with losses by such remarkable scoresas 54-6, 51-3 and 53-3. To be a wrestler during this era meant to be humiliated, to bear abandoment, to doubt one's self, to despair. To the rare outsider who paid it notice, wrestling was an antonym of success. But to the beleaguered few who comprised the team, wrestling wasalso synony- mous with hope. A season ago, the theme was transition. A slow, painful building pro- cess that had sprouted amid the quagmire of the previous year had blossomed into a rebirth of great vitality. It was arefreshing time to be a wrestler, but it was notwithout its momentsasanywithin memo- ry, but hope forthings to come and atremendous esprit de corps was inspiration enough to carry the unit eagerly through the campaign. To the uninitiated public, it was a mystery how a year ofseven wins and twelve losses could be regardedwith such satisfaction. But to the growing circle that followed grappling, it was sweet success indeed. And on the third year, they arose from the dead. In a year as joyful as any resurrection, the first winning season in six years was hewed out against atrying twenty-seven meet schedule. Victory came often enough and resounding enough to provide the long anticipated rewards, but defeat came with enough regularity to provide great impetus for success next year. The sport of wrestling is an activity that never makes promises, but the prospects for the coming year appear to be of unprecedented calibre. For those who graduatefrom the program, the experience of being involved in arejuvenation nearly equated to that of Lazarus shall surely never be forgotten. For the outsiders, the record finally speaks for itself. -Brian Harrison 1. ' 1. Mike Ryan struggles to overtake for- midable Pacelli opponent, 2. Asecond place regional finish and a seventh place in the state meet could hardly be called a failure or even mediocre. Coach Jewison's thinclads were hampered by bad training weather and lack of depth in the early meets. These were key factors in poor shows at the state indoor and the St. John's and Waterloo invitationals. By May itwas clear that the success or failure of the season would rest on the shoulders of some key individuals.JuniorPeteGathjeltwo- mile? is a runaholic who won the region in a record time of9:45.4. Senior Dan Miller came on strong at state to take a second in the 880 with a sizzling 1:58. Senior Paul Theobald went a personal high of 6'2 to take a second which under ordinary circumstances would have been a first. Two really 'heavy' guys picked up some points in the weight events as Jack Holt and Mick Reed took third and fifth re- spectively in the state meet. INEXPERIENCE HOLDS BACK NETTERS The 1974 season for the LHS tennis team will not go down in history as one of the most successful years in the won- loss column. The Eagles, with a new coach and only one returning senior, could not get the ball bouncing their way . The team was loaded with new, inexpe- rienced faces which showed up time and again as the netters came away from meets disappointed with only one good consistent performer. The going got pretty rough as the Eagles were defeated twice by both Cotter and Pacelli. Lourdes' best finish at invitational meets was at St. John's University where the Eagles finished sixth in a field of sixteen teams. ln the state meet at St. Paul, LHS fin- ished in a tie for twelfth place out of twenty-three as senior Nleg Horan won all her matches before succumbing in the quarterfinals. The '74 season did show a lotof prom- ise, however. Experienced ga i ned by several underclassmen and the leader- ship of three returning lettermen could change '74's defeats into '75's vic- tories. Sen- iors sadly put away their mud-soaked, frozen Cwhitel sneakers for the last time, and underclassmen look forward to next year with wild anticipation. 86 HIGH SCHGCL BAND 1974 After hanging up marching band for anot1er season, the one-hundred-odd band members honed their instru- mental expertise into a pretty decent concert band. Underthe direction of coach Gene Eiden t1e L. H . S . concert band took state at the State Banc Festival with an A rating. All in all it was a typical year for the Lourdes Band. With football , basketball, and hockey games, Bando- rama , concerts , and parades, no band member can ever complain of not having enough to do. He had reason to believe so - the '73 corps, which compiled an excellent record and took sixth place in the state meet, was identical to the '74 squad save for one graduate. Father Lovas set three goals for his promising squad. He wanted an undefeated season, an LHS state med- alist and most ofall, a state championship. Thoughts about an unbeaten season were erased immediately when the Eagles lost their opening match against Pacelli. The linksters then got hot as team balance and toughness on their home course kept them flying high. Then as state drew closer, the Eagles' per- formance tailed off some. Nine players hada shot at competing in state but only four participated. Lourdes' Jim Bantley was co-med- alist, but the team failed to get the biggie. The Eagles finished in a tie for fifth as the state cham- pionship eluded Lourdes once again. -Paul Klauda 94 1. Dave Broich 2. Dave Sparks 3. Jim Bantley 4. Mike Brengman 5. Dave Wood 6. The basic idea came from social science teacher IVlr. Marv Peters who had experience with a similar pro- gram at Loyola High School of Illlankato. A faculty committee led by lVlr. Peters searched for course topics to offer students . The result was nearly a hundred various courses ranging from crocheting to yoga. To register over five hundred students in a pe- riod of two days proved equal ly difficult. Armed with note cards, box files, permission slips, and relatively quick intellects ,faculty members ENRICHMENT DAYS became a part of the human computer created in the weight room by the Commons .With little trouble and no complete breakdowns the human computer processed and rechecked all registra- tions . The days themselves proved to be the easiest part . Classes and activities began IVlay lst and continued through IVlay 3rd. Each day had five hours of fun with one hour oflunchfollowed by another hour ofassembly, Twenty-one hours of enjoyment did bring interest back to Lourdes, but tired, weak, and sore students were glad to get back to the old classroom routine for a rest, 124 0.
