THE PRIEST To live in the midst of the world without desiring its pleasures; To be a member of each family, yet belonging to none; To share all sufferings; To penetrate all secrets; To heal all wounds; To go from men to God and offer Him their prayers; To return from God to men to bring pardon, peace and hope; To have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; To teach and to pardon, to console and to bless always; My God, what a life.' And it is yours, 0 Priest of Jesus Christ! 3r. Richard $rombaclt We the students, faculty, staff, and friends of Fr. Richard Brombach would like to express our deepest gratitude to him for his years of devotion at Lourdes. 24 SPECIAL EVENTS Twenty-five years ago Lourdes graduated twelve special people. These were the first graduates from Lourdes Central. The valedictorian that special year was Mary Kay Friede, and our salutatorian was Linda Esser. The senior class officers of 1960 were Mary Kay Friede - President, Patricia Durr - Vice President, Linda Esser - Secretary, and Arnold Ziels - Treasurer. Since there was no football team yet, there was no Homecoming royalty, however Mary Kay Friede and Arnold Ziels led the Grand March at prom. The Snow Queen for 1960 was Madeline Sasse. Our first Homecoming royalty were crowned in 1964 and they were Frank Heng and Judith Oelke. 25 Rick shows off his grass skirl! Could this really be the seniors? This year a couple of new days were added to spirit week. The seniors chose “Nerd Day”, the juniors- “Hawaiian Day”, the sophomores- “Defiance Day”, and the freshman chose “Punk Rock Day”. Spirit Week started out with “Punk Rock Day” on Monday. The students, as well as the teachers, got into the spirit by wearing “punk” clothes, wild hairdos, and last, but not least, all sorts of strange make-up. On Tuesday, the Administration allowed the students a little more freedom than usual. The students could be seen wearing headphones in class, chewing gum and even watching T.V. in the library. HOMECOMING 1984 Above: Mike and Susie find time to study. Below: The faculty holds a special pep rally for the seniors. Leslie and Cherle get ready for Punk Rock Day. On Wednesday the seniors chose Nerd Day. A manner of “nerdish” clothes were worn. On Thursday, even though the week was coming to a close the kids still showed their spirit by wearing grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts, sandals, and shorts. Friday was Blue and White Day. The sophomores are ready to go to the beach. Sue, where did you get that outfit? Above: The underclassmen wait in the truck to “drag” main. Right: Fr. Benton, Sue and Theresa show their school spirit. The Juniors sponsored this year’s bonfire, and as tradition goes they made the claim of the “Biggest and Best” bonfire the school has had. The Junior skit was set as a cheeseburger stand and the teacher were portrayed in a little different manner. For the grand finale they threw a mustang into the bonfire. Pohl, the first superintendent of Lourdes speaks at an assembly. Below: Fr. Johnson greets visiting parents and alumni on Thursday. Catholic Schools Week 1985 was very special because it was our celebration of 25 years at Lourdes. One of the special activities of the week was that each day one of the past superintendents visited school and celebrated mass with the student body. These people all complimented the growth and excellence at Lourdes as well as telling about their experiences here at Lourdes. On Monday the faculty and staff were honored by the school board. 32 Above: Kevin shows his coordination. Left: Lorenza prepares for the whip cream eating contest. On Tuesday we honored the groups who support Lourdes by presenting plaques to them. Some of the groups honored were the churches in the area as well as the sports boosters and others. Wed- nesday was students day. This day was celebrated by giving the students an afternoon away from class. Games were held in the gym for class competition. Thursday was an Open House. Parents and alumni were welcomed and encour- aged to stop by and visit school. To finish out the week, the alumni were honored. Fr. Pohl, the first superintendent of Lourdes cele- brated mass and spoke to the students at an assembly. The football toss is tougher than it looks. 33 PROM 1985 Pat and Mark decide what to do next. Below: Steve and Greg put the finishing touches on the crepe paper. Right: Dave and Bob take a break. This year the prom theme was “All Night Long’ . The juniors honored the seniors with a banquet before the dance. The decorations were done in blue and silver and colored lights were used as well. The band this year was Scanner. The major attraction was the ice sculpture which was placed in the center of the dance floor. Prom decorations require this kind of teamwork. Jeff and Terry put on the finishing touches. 35 ALL NIGHT LONG ... The sophomores relax before they serve dinner. The evening began with a dinner which was prepared by the junior parents, and served by the sophomores as well as the junior mothers. The menu for the dinner included a salad, prime rib, rolls, vegetables, a dessert, and mock wine. To add to the atmosphere of the evening, soft dinner music was played by one of the band members of “Scanner during the banquet. Cheers! A toast to prom 1985. Lorenza enjoys her first prom with date Steve Wood. 36 Linda picks out music for the afternoon. Three against one, this isn’t fair! SENIOR SKIP DAY You can’t get a tan with that blanket Cherie Leslie and Linda pose, while the guys try to catch the geese. Every year the Seniors get to pick a day to “skip school. They spend the day relaxing away from the usual hectic school day. This year they decided to go horseback riding and spend the afternoon at a lake but it rained. Even though the morning started out cold and dreary, the seniors made it enjoyable. Instead of riding horses as planned, they went bowling and then finished off the day by spending the afternoon at Holmes Lake playing football and “tanning ! The guys wait “on the bus for everyone to finish lunch at Valentinos. Rick and Lonnie prepare to start the football game. 37 All School Play Dirty Work In High Places Left: The evil Mr. Grimmes making a new evil plot! Above: Look! Over there! BACCALAUREATE COMMENCEMENT The guys listen intently to the speaker. Theresa's joy shows as she marches up the aisle. This was the 25th graduating class at Lourdes. Two of the students’ parents grad- uated in the first class at Lourdes. They were the parents of Theresa Schnitzer and Kevin Kleineweber. We also had co-salutatorians this year. They were Leslie Rakes and Linda Wood. Left: Smile Kevin, you finally made it. Right: Anne gives her valedictorian speech. 42 The girls sing “Dream a Dream . They were coached by Fr. Ed Weigel, Bob Schneider, and Fr. Daniel Pohl, respectively. In 1963, the first year Lourdes became active in football, the school’s traveling bus, the Blue Goose, was destroyed by a fire on a trip to Fort Calhoun along with much football equipment. The people of Nebraska City were generous enough to replace it with a new bus and new equipment to compensate for the loss. The coaches for our first football team were Bob Gibson and Ron Eiserman. 1963 was also the first year Lourdes had a football rally and bonfire. Girls basketball didn’t begin until 1979 which was coached by Dennis Berry. 47 i ne J_aay rvnignts prepare V 31 One of Excitement and Improvemen - - The 1984 volleyball season was one of excitement and improvement. With only 2 regular starters returning from the 1983 squad and with both setters lost to graduation, one could have had doubts about the onset of the season. With a few role changes plus the dedication of a strong senior class and the added talents of an aspiring sophomore group, the team was off and running. With 2 strong consolation bracket wins in the Tecumseh and Peru Invitational tournaments and a 2nd place trophy finish in the Galaxy Conference, one could term the 1984 season a true success. The 12-7 finish for the varsity and a perfect 8-0 mark for our scrappy J-V’s reflect the hours of dedication and hard work put forth by the girl athletes of our school. Lourdes alumni Janet Hauder assisted Mrs. Liesemeyer this season of many victories. It was a real learning experience for Janet and the whole team to have a former teammate as a coach. Going into the third game they lost a hare fought battle 38-37, to the highly rated Filley Wildcats. The highlight of the pre-Christmas season was a come-from-behind win over Palmyra. The first five games were played without letter winners Robert Hauder and Lonnie Moore. After Christmas layoff and hard work the blue and white crew bombed the Stella Mustangs in a 60-34 victory. On January 7, the Knights hosted the 5th ranked Elmwood Pirates and played an exceptional game before losing 47-45 in the closing seconds. The season continued on January 8, with a stupendous victory over Dawson-Verdon with a score of 65-46. The regular season ended on February 8, with a 51-61 loss to Pawnee City. The Galaxy Conference Tournament was held at Stella with the Knights loss In a well played game against Tecumseh with a score of 38-46. District first round play brought a victory over Dawson-Verdon with the result of 57-41. The following night Lourdes saw their season come to an end with a very close but disappointing loss to Lewiston by the final score of 59-56. The Knights final record of 4-14 did not truly reflect their season. There were many close games with very good teams. The Knights are looking forward to next year’s season. Early season losses against ranked teams contributed to a slow start. The Lady Knights were able to recover somewhat during a long weekend of games, playing four games over five days and posting 2 wins and 2 losses. A tough schedule, however, left the team fighting an uphill battle all season. The team posted only three more wins although they were very close in a number of other games. Few teams were able to dominate because of the outstanding defense played by the Lady Knights. The team will suffer the loss of six seniors but looks forward to generating more offense and putting more numbers in the win column. a s e t Diane Beckman keeps the ball out of reach from opponents. The speech team was under the direction of Sr. Mary lvo. With their outstanding abilities the team won numerous competitions at both the local and state levels throughout the years. The music department was also many fine recitals with both the students voices and their instruments. Lourdes also had a glee club which was headed by Sr. Frances Ursula. In 1961 the first play was held on the stage at Lourdes and it was called “Our Town’’. This play received a superior rating at District competition that year. Since then Lourdes has added Math Club, Spanish Club, and Letterman’s Club, as well as many other honor clubs. SPANISH CLUB Members include (L to R) Front row: Lorenzo Bar bom, Chene Schreiner. The Math Club is made up of all sophomore, junior, and senior high math students who enjoy math. They take part in various math activities. The Field Day sponsored by Mu Alpha Theta is their money- making project each year. With this money, the Math Club has purchased such things as scientific calculators and some Apple II software. Also, new compasses and protractors were pur- chased for the geometry class. A large portion of the Math Club traveled to Northwest Missouri State University in Marysville for a math contest. Five students from each of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes took part in the contest. Even though none of the students placed in the top ten, they all scored well above average on their tests. Left: Mr. Watton helps the members grade tests on Math Field Day. These members were selected by a special nomination committee. Each student must be scholastically eligible first before consideration can begin Then a list of services each student has done is submitted. Each teacher fills out an evaluation for each candidate’s character and leadership. Scholarship, service, character, and leader ship are the four criteria for selection into the National Honor Society Mr. Cox is the chapter advisor. One-Act Play The 1985 One-Act Play, “The Bridge”, was based on the Old Norse Folk Tale, “Three Billy Goats Gruff”. It opens with three trolls guarding a bridge. On one side of the bridge is a large herd of goats. The goats have eaten their pastures bare, and are starving. On the other side of the bridge is a hillside lush with delicious green grass. Three billy goats — Credo, Hero, and Solo — approach the bridge in hopes of persuading the trolls to let the starving herd cross over to the green pastures. Credo and Hero cringe before the trolls and flatter and cajole them. Solo refuses to join in the adulation, calling the trolls fakes and superstitions. But the trolls will open the bridge to the herd only if one of the goats volunteers to be sacrificed. Although the script is based on a children’s story this is not a children’s play. It is an important, timely, intelligent look at the weaknesses of modern society. “The Bridge” received a superior rating at Galaxy competition and an excellent rating at Districts. Members of the cast include: Sue Heng - Purple Troll; Michelle Penning - Green Troll; Leslie Rakes - Gray Troll; Anne Stratker - Billy Solo; Theresa Larsen - Billy Hero; and Kim Olmer - Billy Credo. Above: The billy goats beg to cross the bridge. Right: Billy Hero prevents Billy Solo from speaking blasphemy. Below: The trolls demand a sacrifice. Break’s over ■ back to work! Swing Choir The Lourdes Swing Choir was organized in the fall of 1984. This new addition to the curriculum made a big hit with the students who came to school at 7:00 a.m. to rehearse. They had many performances throughout the year including a few competitions in which they could gauge their effort. Even though it took a lot of time and effort I’m sure they would all agree that the fun they had was worth it all!! Where are the men? Show us your best side guys! BAND Band activities increased dramatically this year. Mr. Hubbard came to Lourdes after school began and that curtailed many marching activities. The stage and concert bands competed at Norfolk, Peru State, and Kansas City. They attended the conference clinic in Pawnee City and received a superior rating at district competition held in Auburn.
