All of this occurred in the first quarter. In the second period Walter Smith recovered two punts in the end zone mark- ing up l2 more points. Midway in the third quar- ter, Welch scored a 34 yard end run for Male's fourth and last touchdown, Beard converting for the extra point. This being Vonnahme's first game, he played an outstanding defensive part. In the fourth game of the season Male defeated Erie, Penn. in a hard fought game by a score of l8-6. Theyoutstanding performers were McDer- mott and Cooper. For the next contest we left our concrete Max- well field and traveled to Mayfield, Kentucky. After a very enjoyable trip, which included girls and good food for the team, we triumphed over the Mayfield Crimsons 56-O. Vonnahme scored his first touchdown by pass interception. The break finally came in our victories. Knox- ville High was successful in avenging the '43 de- feat by overpowering Male 20-0. Injuries to Welch, Kemper and Heager contributed much to our loss.
