To a job fhaf will require much work and fhoughf fo make clear fhaf dark fufure fhaf sfares us in fhe face. When we firsf arrived af Male fhree years ago we felf losf and almosf afraid as we walked and sfrolled fhrough fhe halls and surroundings of Male. Yef we were proud and happy fo be going fo such a greaf school. As fhe days wenf by we became acquainfed wifh all fhe fhings fhaf make up fhe powerful machine called Male. We realized fhaf we were a parf of fhaf greaf machine. Alfhough mosf of us did nof realize if, we became larger bofh physically and menfally. We acquired knowledge, we learned fhings and mosf of all we gained experience fhaf will be useful fo us fhe resf of our lives. Male has a greaf and glorious pasf. One cannof affend Male wifhouf feeling fhe effacf of fhis greaf pasf. This fradifion sfands ouf before us like a guiding lighf. 'We have been fhrough fhe fhree years of Male and we have felf and are proud of fhaf greaf pasi and fradifion. We only hope fhaf we have added anofher honor- able year fo if. We are now af fhe end of fhree of fhe greafesf years of our lives. We look back and remember many of fhe inferesfing and comical incidenfs in fhe rooms and halls of Brook and Breck. We are fhankful for having had fhe pleasure of being under fhe guidance of such capable professors. O yes. we have made cracks abouf such and such a feacher buf down deep in our hearfs we know fhaf fhey have done and are doing a greaf job. I feel and shall always feel fhaf I wen? fo fhe besf high school in fhe counfry. To fhis greaf school l say farewell. Tu vli v GZGJJ. As we walked up fhe sfeps of Louisville Male High School in fhe la'Her parf of fhe year l940, few of us realized whaf was in sfore for us on fha inside. We frembled af fhe sighf of fhe fre- mendous halls and wondered whaf sfrange fhings would happen fo aFFecf our fufure lives. Sophomoresl Who were we amid a welfer of upper classmen? As English fhree's we knew pracfically nofhing of fhe school fo which we would be coming for fhe nexf fhree years. Sure, we had heard our fafhers speak of fhe High School spirif, buf fo us if was iusf anofher word in our vocabulary. Thai foofball season we were under fhe leadership of Coach Sfovall and wenf down in defeaf fo our arch rivals, 'lhe goafs from Manual. ln fhe spring of l94l we gof our firsf glimpse of fhis High School spirif: our baseball feam won fhe Falls Cify Tournamenf and fhe golf 'l'eam won fhe sfafe 'I'i'I'le. As we leff Male for fhe summer vacafion, we wondered whefher our new foofball coach, Mr. Jenkins, would give us a win over Manual. As iuniors we came back fo a school fhaf had more High School spirif fhan had been seen in years. Af'I'er foofball season Mr. Jenkins replaced Mr. Whife as head baskefball coach. Noi only fhe hisfory of fhe world, buf fhe lives of fhe Male High boys were changed on December 7, I94I, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. I+ seemed fo puf fhaf old fighf info us because we fook abouf every honor offered in fhe spring of '42. Our band gof fhe highesf possi- ble rafing in an all-soufhern confesf. The Male High baseball feam won fhe Falls Ci'I'y Tournamenf for fhe second year in succession. Perhaps our frack feam was 'rhe biggesf success of fhe year in fhaf we won fhe Cify Championship, fhe All Kenfucky Conference, and finally fhe Sfafe Meef. Our golf and swimming feams also won sfafe championships. ln fhe fall we came back as seniors and fhe mosf inferesfing fime of our lives. Under fhe guidance of Colonel Hufchinson 'lhe milifary regimenf advanced more fhan ever before. Male High losf fwo of +he mosi' beloved men ever fo 'leach here. Mr. Carpenfer and Mr. Allen gave fheir lives so fhaf we could learn 'lo make fhe fine fhings even finer. The seniors chose very capable officers in fhe following boys: Red Schoening as Presidenf, Junie Slider as Vice-Presidenf, Alberf Schmif as Secrefary, Carl Hollenbach as Treasurer, Vic Engelhard as Hisforian, Walfer Hume as Prophef, Bobby Payne as Poef, and Ros Richardson as Sgf.-af-Arms. Our baskefball feam confinued 'ro win fhe fame fhaf if had achieved fhe previous year. They won fhe Cify Championship and fhe All Kenfucky Conference Baskefball Tournamenf for fhe firsf fime in fhe hisfory of Male High School. Our baseball and frack feams looked forward fo a very successful season. To fhe under classmen we, fhe class of '43, leave one message: lf is nof fhe size of fhe dog in fhe fighf, buf fhe size of fhe figh+ in 'the dog. Thulw-u Ulau Poem ON GRADUATING I I+ seems bul only yeslerday when, open-moulhed and green, I firsl' came inlo old Male High and sfood before +he dean. I Icnew nof fhe lradilion, nor no love l fell' as yef For fhe school fhal' means so much 'Io meg even now my eyes are wel. Now Ioolring baclr upon lhese scenes, my 'lhoughls are api 'lo fly. I remember jusl 'Ihe simple fhings and +here lei my hearf lie. The wild jumble of +he voices al lhe daily classes close, The Ieclures in +he springlime when we were api' lo doze. I remember how I Iisfened +o heels clicking in 'Ihe hall And 'l'he worried looks of lruanls leaning on fhe office wall. I remember wafching snow flalies shaflering on ihe window pane And I hear fhe cloclx upon 'I'he wall licking ouf i'Is old refrain. IV I remember lhe +hriIl and lension when lhe ieam came on fhe field, And lhe feeling of delighl we lmew when vicfory was sealed. I see again 'I'he 'faces of fhe boys across 'Ihe row: Lef's see, +here's Milne and Sammy, and of course, fhere's good old Joe V My high school days are ending, and my childish 'lhings laid by: The world exfends before me and inspiration waves on high. JOHN ZUTT Maior-Science Glafu liacmhecq As I sank back in my easy chair, fhankful for fhe chance fo relax for a few momenfs, my mind wandered back over fhe lasf sevenfeen years-back fo I943 and Male High School. Affer all fhe work and frials fhaf I had gone fhrough since fhose High School days, fhe mere recollec- fion of fhe carefree friendships, fhe heavy dafes, fhe sfruggles wifh obsfinafe feachers for fhaf exfra fwo per cenf, fhe liferary clubs, all four maior sporfs, fhe R. O. T. C., fhe amazed Eng- lish 3's, fhe amused English 8's, and fhe sessions wifh C.W.K. -all aroused in me a desire fo frace down fhe men wifh whom I had shared fhose pleasures. Realizing, however, fhe impos- sibilify of gafhering all fhe men fogefher, I was forced fo be confenf wifh searching old news- papers, efc., for records of fhem. The following is whaf I found: Soon affer Commencemenf fhe maiorify of our class wenf info fhe armed services. Syd Sfealey disfinguished himself by picking off I36 Japanese in fwo days, a feaf for which he was decorafed by General MacArfhur. Allie Lawyer was made a fop sergeanf fhree weeks affer he was inducfed, and a year lafer was puf in Capfain Bafes' company. Herberf, by fhe way, led his company on a daring raid in France, for which he received fhe Disfinguished Service Cross. Our class was well represenfed in fhe Air Corps, wifh Bob Payne and Joe Sfewarf in Bill La Masfer's squadron. Jim Brinfon was soon an insfrucfor in Commando facfics, which he had been pracficing for on his dafes. As a resulf of fhe ample opporfunifies afforded, many of of our class gained commissions in fhe Army and Navy. Louis Shelfon was one of fhe boys who sfayed in affer fhe armisfice and is now a full colonel. The band in his regimenf has won several prizes, and is regarded by all Army aufhorifies as fhe besf milifary band in fhe nafion. Roberf Ashbrook has become fhe foremosf linguisf of our fime, wifh six books on languages already published in his name. Henry Buchfhal is now a world-recognized liferary crific. His be- lief in old forms of liferafure, and his scorn for fhe frivolous, airy wrifing fhaf was a nafural posf-war resulf, are well known fo everyone. Bill Campbell ranks wifh fhe liferary genii of our class also, in a sfrange sorf of way, because he edifed and published fhe new Campbell Dic- fionary, which was very educafionall?l for fhe general public. Bill's vocabulary always was amazing. Warren Liberf, affer complefing college in fwo years, rose rapidly in fhe scienfific world fo his presenf high posifion in fhe G-E Research laborafories. Jack Everback soon ran Richman Brofhers ouf of business, for everyone wanfed his com- pany's Super-Zoof suifs lwifh a belf in fhe backl. Bob Ransom collaborafed wifh Jack fo puf ouf a shoe sfyle mafching fhe suif. Ransom's Shoe Sfore, 548 S. 4fh, monopolizes fhaf frade in Louisville. Ros Richardson wenf wesf, where he worked his way up fo edifor of fhe San Fran- cisco Sun. George Kellerman also wenf wesf where, by virfue of fhe experience he had while on fhe Brook 'n Breck sfaff af Male, and by Ros's help, he esfablished a gossip column fhaf now over- 7 liillv -,wrrrl 61644 shadows fhe lafe Walfer WincheIl's af ifs besf. Calvin Beck wenf in for polifics and gained moderafe success. He's been a Federal iudge for fhe pasf fhree years. Vic Engelhard broke info mofion picfures affer his wife did labouf l950l, buf fhe women of America liked him so much fhaf he rapidly became fhe besf invesfmenf M.G.M. ever made. Don Kinker, an aeronaufical engineer, and his fwo old baskefball pals, Herman Oldham and Wolf Henry Schoening, have been very acfive here in Louisville lafely lespecially on Saf- urday nighfsl. Don, having made a large forfune from aviafion, refurned fo his old home fown fo seffle down and enjoy life. Herman worked fwo weeks during fhe defense boom and has been living off fhe money he earned fhen ever since. Red is now fhe foofball coach af Michi- gan, where he has produced fhree Big Ten championship feams in fhe pasf six years. There was a sensafional band fhaf was fhe favorife of fhe U. S. abouf I948. Their nighfly radio program was one of fhe besf in fhe business. Frank Cyfron was fhe Masfer of Ceremonies and Bill Fereday was fhe band-leader. Dick Durlauf and Dossie Haas were fhe saxophonisfs, Richard King was a frumpef player, Franklin Cassady was fhe pianisf, and Jimmy Gufferman was on fhe drums. There were several ofhers fhaf Bill had goffen since fhe Male Hi days, buf acfually fhis red-hof band could be fraced back fo a send-off given if by Hi-School boys. There are fhree producfs for which Kenfucky is famous: horses, whisky, and beaufiful women. Sam Barber now spends mosf of his fime on his fine sfud farm near Springfield, buf he manages fo devofe a li'Hle energy fo fhe lasf fwo ifems on fhe lisf given above. John Harrison, fhe gay Caballero, fried fo make love fo every woman he saw: buf soon he realized fhaf if was geffing him nowhere, so he seffled down, when he had become an infernafional diplomaf, fo a comforfable married life. Professor Hollenbach is now a veferan feacher af Male. He fook Mr. Tague's place in fhe English deparfmenf in l953 and has been perplexing his sfudenfs ever since. Mr. Tague refired when he found he could make a much easier living adverfising Buicks fhan feaching school. Finally I could remember no more of fhe evenfful lives of fhe Class of '43. Many ofhers had disfinguished fhemselves, cerfainly, buf fhe huge fask of 'tracing down and keeping in fouch wifh all of fhe fellows was one foo large fo be faced successfully. Regreffully, buf wifh pleasanf recollecfions of high school daze sfill fresh in my memory, I snapped back fo fhe presenf and fo my worries abouf Dr. Elmer Schmidf's case in room ZIO af fhe Bapfisf Hospifal. Affer a long and heafed discussion, we fwo decided fo splif fhe case befween us and drink if immediafely- which we did. Dr. Walfer I.
