This is only the second year that the activif ties of the two classes have been combined and set forth in one book. We have earnestly striven to include every achievement of both classes, and we believe' we have succeeded. We are, therefore, proud to submit to you this version of your past four years in high school. We have purposely omitted programs, tags, etc., that we assume are already cherished possessions of every class book. If you find we have made any glaring omissions, please add your own footnotes. Finally, we extend hearty good wishes to you, and hope that our ECHO will make your good times in high school echo and refecho through all the years to come. J. M. and S. F. To the Class of 1927 One moment yet! From all the years ahead From all the dear days past one moment yet To live with spirits of things that used to be. Ambition realized, we linger still, Remembering happy days we spent with you. And now that all too soon our time is spent, Without a trace of sorrow or of pain, With hearts that sing of future promises, We say, Until we meet again! ' CARMBLITA ABEGG President of Class of IQ27 To the Class of 19275 In everyone's life there are big days, days which will shine out above all others, days which will never be forgotten. I have been fortunate in having two years of such red' letter days, the two terms of my presidency of the Class of 19275. Perhaps few of you remember our Junior and Senior elections, but for me they mark my happiest moments at high school. I realize that I have had the greatest honor a class can bestow-that of being president-and I want you to know how proud In am, how sin' cerely I appreciate your understanding and cofoperation, how much I value the oppor- tunity to serve you that has been mine. The realization that there are live more months still ahead of us makes us more eager to cram our days full of joys. The last semester at L. G. H. S. must be the happiest one of all. You are all full of plans and hopes which can be and will be fulfilled. As for me, could anything be better than to have another term as your president, to enjoy your co' operation, and, best of all, to be with you? S., let us look back and take a survey of the highflights of our high school career. just about the time we were becoming ac' quainted with our new home, the Atherton High School was opened, in the fall of 1923, and many of our classmates left us for the new school. Then came the Charm School. first production coached by our renowned Miss Bliss. Grace Dowden and Katherine Pfau were the dashing young heroes, who made love to our heroines, Martha Graves and Edna Edinger. Later in this year Eleanor Huber won laurels in the National Ora' torical Contest. Thus was the year of 1923f24 ended with much excitement and enf thusiasm. The school year 1924f25 saw many vital improvements in our school. Among these were the new library, the Little Sister movement, formation of the Honor Society, and the new Student Council system. This spring, as in the year before, we were stirred by another Senior play. This time it was Honor Bright. Jack Wakefield and Martha Ayres played opposite Leora Lucas and Flora Sutcliffe. Scarcely had the new term of 1925f26 begun when there was an infantile paralysis epidemic. All public schools were closed for two weeks. Instead of thinking of this as a terrible disaster, however, many of us hailed it as just another vacation. After we came back to school, the class oflicers of the Class of '27 were elected as follows: president, Carmelita Abegg, vice president, Sarah Fisher, secretary, Dorothy Baker, treasurer, Alice Park, pianist, Elsie Wakeland, cheer leader, Susan Wall, and sergeantfatfarms, Louise Witt. Shortly before Christmas the Classes of 1927 and 1927Vg each gave a dance to finance the juniorfSenior dance. Then came the choosing of our class ring. A standard ring was adopted to be used by all succeeding classes. The Class of 1927M elected the following officers: president, Anna Margaret Hershey, vice president, Elizabeth Davis, secretary, Clara May Hartmetz, treasurer, Alene Crutcher. In the early part of january, 1926, an attractive little room was built near the Winged Victory. This was to be the oflicial RECORD room. At the performance of The Strange Adventures of Miss Brown the senior play of 1926, the English VI's sold candy. The gallant Captain Courtenay, Georgia Miller and jean Graham, eloped with the petite Angela Brightwell, Ethel Klein and Virginia Mullan. Betty Hawes, of the Class of '27, designed the prizefwinning tag to advertise the play. Following the Oratorical Contest, which was won by Kitty Hyatt, came the thrill of the juniorfSenior dance and boat ride. This was a fitting fare' well to the Seniors, who were graduating. The year of 19264927 began with the election of officers of the Class of '27, The officers were the same as for the preceding year, with the exception of sergeantfatfarms, Dorothy Zimmerman, and cheer leader, Lucy Hagerty. Early in December the whole school rallied to the aid of Miss Kranz and the Glee Club in the production of 'Yanki San. A delightful memory was left by this expertly executed performance. Resting became a popular indoor sport. Before the Christmas holidays our new stage was Hnished. After we came back to school, the '2'71Qofficers were elected. They were as follows: president, Anna Margaret Hershey, vice president, Virginia Whelan: secretary, Cora Graf, treasurer, Clara May Hartmetz. Soon try-outs for our senior play were announced, O such ex- citement! The second trvfouts and name of our play were announced. It was to be Penrod, a dramatization of the adventures of Booth Tarkington's bestfknown hero. After long weeks of rehearsing, came the two play days, April 8 and Q. Our Penrod was played by Bertha Krisch and Ruth Barnes, supported by two excellent casts, to say nothing of Mike, Miss Higgins' spotless dog. Of course, Penrod was undoubtedly the best perf formance ever put on at Girls High. To add to its charm, the Schohelds' house and garage had been built, painted, and decorated by our own art students. One morning several days after the play, the school was greeted by a wonderful new velvet curtain on the stage. How proud we were. The National Oratorical Contest of 1027 was won by Miriam Wilson, of the '27LQ Class, who also carried off second place in the State finals. V The last days of our high school career were days crowded to the brim with ceaseless rctivities. The highflights of this time were the ,luniorfSenior dance, the boat ride, Class Day, and Class Night. Our final chapter, Graduation, is yet to be given. This will be the real climax of our school days, the realization of our fourfyear dreams. M. E. T. and S. F. I'- xxg sk-l 1 I r. xii? Excitement ran riot during tryouts. and when the casts for Penrod were announced. there was no desire to check it. After four weeks of hard practice, we went to Atherton for dress rehearsal. But what a dress rehearsal! There were no footlights, no roofs on house or garage. The men's clothes had not arrived from Levy's. Mr. Dade and Boh Willizinis, however, made just as good love in skirts. And why shouldn't they? Finally April the eighth came. It rained all day and night, and the weather man promised rain and thunderstorms for Saturday. He kept his word, too, hut no amount of rain could dampen our spirits. We had three full houses. Every ticket had heen sold, and the ushers reported that many people came and offered cash for seats. Back stage, everything was moving like clockwork, yet everyone was afraid something would go wrong. 'il hope -large can kick that plant over, hreathed Miss Boyd. Her fear was rightly warranted, for at every rehearsal ,large had given the hush a vicious kick, all in vain. All right, Della, said ,large on the stage, and everyone stopped hreathing. Plopl The hush fell. A sigh of relief set the hollyhocks tremhling. Although Sam was very ill Saturday afternoon, no one in the audience knew it, for he acted as lively and mischievous as ever. Mike, too, must have heen feeling had, for when Penrod called him, he would not hudge. So poor little Penrod went on without him, and left home forever ---ralone. Yes,H everyone shouted exceptfliitty Hyatt. Where was our leading lady? Half past seven, and Heres Kitty now. just another case, you know, of the new car, and the starter that wouldn't work. 'LEverybody upstairs for the first actll' Up the stairs we trooped, only to End Miss Boyd hunting wildly for the pistol. The curtain rose. Still no pistol. The drum could be used for the shot, but could Penrod and Sam struggle successfully over a ruler, as in rehearsal? The second act was called, and4the pistol appeared! A breathless usher came bearing the gun. Where in the world was it? Well, when I showed a man to his seat, he looked first at the seat, and then at me. I looked at the seat, and there was the pistol. Anyway, we don't carry concealed weapons. Somebody just parked it there, some' how or other. The play was proceeding smoothly. Crash! Elsie Wakeland had fallen through the cyclorama. Fortunately, neither was hurt. Notwithstanding all the mishaps, we know our senior play was the best ever given. When we have forgotten ourfwell, all those things we've almost forgotten already, Penrod will remain to us in memory a joy forever. A. M. .N . ., , Mfg? . . ' ,f a 1 F I fQ6f'ifi'2 Q. Without, the Hrst pearlfgray shadows of evening are streaking the horizon, and while this faint light lingers, I gaze into the crystal. The allfknowing globe confronts me, and looking far into the future, I see the lives of the graduating class of 1927. As the old Arabfturns his crystal, I make note of all that passes before my eyes- The forms, at first Vague and phantomlike, become clear and distinct. Thenjslowly I begin to recognize familiar faces. I smile as I see Ellen Davis, Ziegfields new star, illuminating Broadway with her success. With her is Sarah Fisher, as a chorus girl, getting inside dope for her startling new novel, Behind the Footlights. In New York, too, are Helen Burks and Margaret Key working in a chemistry laboratory, where they have ingeniously worked out the percentage of iron in H,SO,. Miss Borries is there, pleased and smiling, to see at last the fruits of her teaching! In the quiet solitude of a Boston library I see Sue Wall and Dot 'Zimmerman laboriously pondering over dusty volumes to obtain data for their book on the origin and history of the Estruscan race. Next come Evelyn Gaul and Nell Walker, who are now singing in Grand Opera and are happy and thrilled to have at last reached their goal! Rena Chatham and Bertha Krisch are making their pretty millions on the stage in Chicago as Pen and Rod in The Adventures of Sam. In Washington, jane Mengel, whose hair, my dear girls, is finally long and wavy, gives lessons in a very exclusive school on the technique of man' baiting. Frances johnson is the head of the institution for deaf mutes in the same city, and in her new surroundings she can talk to her heart's content without fear of inter' ruption. Sarah Welch, having learned the merits of the Lodge car in her youth, has the agency for it in Bermuda, and is at last realizing its faults. The Arab turns the crystal once more, and whom should I recognize but Kitty Hyatt and Emma Keats Crutcher installing electric refrigerators in Alaska and praying for hot weather to make their venture a huge success. In Alaska, too, I see Nancy Jane Shawler digging for gold with a husky husband and five little huskies. Katherine Neuwirth and Kitty Park Long have taken the air, and in their selffmade aeroplanes, are making record twoehour trips from Alaska to China. Rosie Engelhard is following the gleam and is now a missionary in sunny Greenland. Lucy Hagerty is with her, giving instruction to all little heathen on how to play hockey with tennis balls! I see Eugenia Adams and Erma Harris practicing for an international swimming relay race across the Atlantic and back. Leora Troxler and Dorothy Fortney are their trainers and are following them over the billows in their trusty little row boat. Back on U. S. soil Helen Coleman and Denola Duflin are selling patent medicine, guarf anteeing new health and vigor after the first twenty bottles. Dorothy Carver and Flor' ence Lutes still delight in being book worms, and as librarians, are iinally getting their fill of volumes big and small. Carmelita Abegg has published her first volume of love lyrics, I i f nf' 357N 'rZ3!i' l ..,i?gffi2Iril7 ix. Betty Hawes, now a cartoonist, has succeeded Sidney Smith, and is making the Gump Family even more famous than ever. Wilma Saults and Louise Witt, who have a beauty salon in Mississippi, are noted for their clever mud lotions. They claim that their treatments will make one more beautiful than Venus. In Tennessee, Alice Park and Alma Mason are promising young lawyers, who have already succeeded in winning one case. I am rather dubious as to what kind of a i'case it was. Our little friends, Dorothy Christie and Margaret Baird, are on the women police force in Chicago.. They are immensely popular with all nice thugs and murderers. The light outside the tent fades. The shadows deepen. As the darkness falls, the visions in the crystal become vaguer and vaguer, and finally disappear. I turn away with a sigh, for, just as the evening breeze has lifted the grains of sand from before the tent, and then let them fall, lightly and fantastically, so have I taken the futures of a few of my friends from the void, scanned them for this brief moment, then dropped them lightly and softly, back into eternity from whence they came. I Club Life at L. G. H. S. Club life affords a most interesting variation in the ordinary course of the school year. In 1927 there are sixteen organized clubs representing literary, scientific, language, musical, and physical activities. Although varying widely in their nature, each society has stated in its constitution a dehnite aim and a determined goal. The two classified as literary clubs, founded to create interest and a deeper appreciaf tion for the best literature, are the Alethean Literary Society and the Palathena. The former claims the honor of being the very first club founded at L. G. H. S. Literary prof grams are offered to its members weekly. Among its most notable accomplishments is its yearly contribution to the Scholarship Fund of the school. For 1926f27, the officers and faculty advisor are: president, Virginia Miller, vice president, Rosabelle Engel' hard, recording secretary, Jane Mengel: corresponding secretary, Emma Keats Crutcher: treasurer, Ellen Davis: Sergeantfatfarms, Lucy Hagerty: faculty advisor, Miss Rosebery. The second literary society, the Palathena, was founded in 1925. Even though it has existed only a brief time, this club has done much for the school. In addition, the Palathena presents to its members programs of literary merit. Its officers and advisor for the year 1927 are: president, Elsie Wakelandg vice president, Gay Hicksg correspondf ing secretary, Sarah Fisherg recording secretary, Helen Burks: treasurer, Carmelita Abeggg sergeant-at-arms, Eugenia Adamsg faculty advisor, Miss Johnston. Every year the Science Club is drawn from the ranks of those girls then studying chemistry. Founded in 1922, this club has been reorganized once and is now function' ing well. Two monthly meetings are held: one at the school, the other as a trip to some interesting plant. This year the Filter Plant, JonesfDabney Paint and Varnish Com' pany, and several other places have been visited. One enjoyable feature is that two picnics are given annually, on the nrst and last meetings of the club year. Ofhcers and faculty advisor for the year are: president, Elizabeth Borries: vice president, Mabelle Weiss: secretary, Helen Burks: treasurer, Florence Lutes: faculty advisor, Miss Borgman. The Garden Club, one of the oldest societies in the school, proposes to arouse within its members a fuller knowledge and appreciation of the beauty of nature. At one time, it was actively engaged in gardening, During the school year 19264927 the following people were chosen as the club officers: president, Ann Higginsg vice president, Dorothy Strother: secretary, Katharine Reese: treasurer, Rosetta Scheuleurg faculty advisor, Miss Jones. The Home Economics Club has been in existence since 1925. Its plan is to study domestic problems and to obtain some knowledge of manufactured materials. For Better Homes Week in 1927, this club prepared a model house for public inspection. In 1927 this society has for its officers: president, Elizabeth O'Brien: vice president, Louise Meyers: secretary, Nancy jane Shawler: treasurer, Dorothy Dorsey: sergeantfatfarms, Colleen O'Brieng faculty representative, Miss C. Snyder. Its main purpose is to display definitely the benehts derived from the study of a sofcalled dead language. For the past four years the programs have varied widely in their nature. In 1925, a debate modeled after Cicero was given, in 1926, a play written by the several Latin classes ranging from the Hfth through the eighth terms, in 1927, a representation of the Catilinian Conspiracy. Its officers for the year are: president, Ellen Davis Celected after the resignation of Virginia Millerlg vice president, Letitia Green, secretary and treasf urer, Alma Mason, faculty advisor, Miss Thompson. The French Club, founded in 1922, presents to its members programs in the French language. In 1926 a play entitled Le Voyage de Monsieur Perrichon was given at one meeting. Its oflicers for the year 1927 are: president, Alice Park, vice president, Florence Lutes, treasurer, Carmelita Abegg, faculty advisor, Miss Green. The third language society in the school is the Spanish Club. It was first organized in 1919 under the name of El Liceo, which was changed in 1925 to El Circulo Espanol. Many programs consisting of plays,,charades, and travel talks by various members of the faculty are enjoyed. In 1927, at one meeting, the play, Oue Felicidad, was presented by several members. The following are the officers for this year: president, Alice Park, vice president, Mabelle Rowlett, secretaryftreasurer, Thelma Finley, faculty advisor, Miss M. Snyder. Shifting from the mental to the physical, the Gym Club functions here. It was founded in 1919 with Miss C. Allen as faculty advisor. The work of this club is only mentioned in this article, for its various activities are discussed at length on the Sports Page. Its officers, as listed, are: president, Eleanor Ritter, secretaryftreasurer, Elizabeth Davis, advisor, Miss C. Allen. Another interesting phase of school life is seen in musical organizations, such as the Uke and Glee Clubs. The former was organized in 1925 under the direction of Miss Kranz. Its programs 'furnish to its members both the skill to play and an ear practiced to appreciate semifclassics. To be a member of this club, one must possess only a ukelele and a desire to learn music. The officers for 1927 are: instructor, Genevieve Bacon, as' sistant instructor, Grace Claycomb, pianist Anna Lee Scott, supervisor, Miss Kranz. The Glee Club is one of the most popular in the school. It has won many cups for L. G. H. S. Especially has it been successful at the State Contests held at Lexington, Ken' tucky. This very year the chorus joyfully returned with a silver loving cup for the school. The chosen oiiicials for 1927 are: president, Elizabeth O'Brien, secretaryftreasurer, Nell Walker, librarian, Eugenia Adams, faculty advisor, Miss Kranz. Two branches of the National Girl Reserves, the IcefBreakers and the True-Blues, function in the school. The IcefBreakers are upper class girls. The officers are: president, Louise Hardee, vice president, Annabel Briggs, secretary, Kitty Watkins, treasurer, Evelyn White. The second division, the True-Blues, consists of girls from the Freshman Class. This year the club has been divided into three groups, dramatic, reading, and athletic. Each division elects its own officers, but one president, Merle Gysel, presides over the entire club. The officers for the separate groups are: Dramatic-chairman, Jane Fulton, sec' retaryftreasurer, Barbara Adams, Reading-chairman, Garnet Godman, secretary- treasurer, Dorothy Gilchrist, Athletic-chairman, Alene Flanders, secretaryftreasurer, Virginia Hollis. The infant club in the school is the junior Business and Professional Women's Club, founded in 1927 for the benefit of the girls in the Commercial Course. Its purpose is to offer to its members a more secure method of understanding and coping with complex business problems. The pioneer officers are: president, Florence Knadler, vice president, Virginia Whelan, secretaryftreasurer, Lily Detchen, faculty advisor, Miss Dumeyer. Perhaps the strongest organization within the school, one so influential that it far overtops the clubs, is the Student Council. Founded in 1922, it has strengthened and perfected student government at this school. All difficult problems concerning student management are dealt with by this body. Its members are elected by popular vote, there being one representative from each section room. For the school year 19Z6'1927, the officers are: president, Alene Crutcher, vice president, Jeannette Kriete, secretary, Car' melita Abegg. The ofhcers on the Executive Board are: chairman, Ellen Davis, vice chairman, Alma Mason, secretary, Carmelita Abegg, treasurer, Virginia Whelan, faculty advisor, Miss Martin. Lastly, there exist in the school two groups, perhaps not classed as clubs, but so im' portant that they cannot be omitted. They are the Honor Societies, composed of those girls in each class who have attained an average of 90fZ, the preceding term. From the ranks of the English VIII Honor Group the faculty selects those girls to whom Mr. Tinsley presents the honor society pins on Commencement night, thereby notifying them of their election to the National Honor Society. The faculty advisor of the Sevens is Miss Stark, of the Eights, Mrs. McBride. The following girls compose the Senior Honor Societies for the year 1927: English VII-Ruth Barnes, Beatrice Brownstein, Cora Graf, Grace Claycomb, Alene Crutcher, Clara May Hartmetz, Anna Margaret Hershey, Janet Lang, Harriet Lindenberger, Lucile Moreland, Clara Lee Oldacre. G. H. S. just in time to witness the last year of the reign of a glorious basket ball team. This Black and Gold quintet, under Miss Naomi Zinsmeister as coach, traveled all over Kentucky, leaving a wake of victories be' hind it. Twice this team was the victor in the District Contest, although they never quite succeeded in winning the State Tournament. The 1927 Class claims one member of that squad-Florence Knadler. The next year a disagreement over the rules abolished that sport in our school. But in 1925 the Sophomores, under the direction of the new coach, Miss Frost, formed two teams and played girls' rules. That attempt inspired hope, and this past year saw five interfclass teams, namely, the last year team fthe old Sophomore teaml, and the Freshman, Sophomore, junior, and Senior teams. In a tournament held at the end of the season, the Sophomores became the school champions. TENNIS In 1924 Miss Stein organized a tennis club for the purpose of having a tournament. Only those who registered and paid their dues could participate in the contest. Cups were offered to the winners of the double and single sets. All the victors have now gone forth from these portals, with the exception of one-Lucy Hagerty. VOLLET BALL Way before our time, in 1919, Miss Allen organized a Gym Club for playing volley ball-open only to girls who had eighth period study on Tuesday. Two and onefhalf years after our entrance, that is, in the February of 1926, an increased popularity demanded that the meetings be held after school-a request immediately granted. In a contest held at the end of that term, Esther Herchenroede.r's team was victor. The next term saw a new conqueror, Jean Matlack's team, and the championship for this last semester seems to stand between these same two teams. SWIMMING In February, 1927, the Freshmen were given an opportunity in sports that the other classes had never had. They were given the chance to take swimming lessons in the indoor pool at Central Park. From the large number of girls who have taken advantage of these instructions, it is certain that by 1935 there will be several new channel swimmers. BASEBALL It was discovered in 1926 that some girls wanted to start a baseball team. The dia- mond in Central Park was secured, two teams were formed and captained by Jane Hollins' head and Esther Herchenroeder, and the whole was ruled over by Miss Frost. The same adventure was started the next spring, with enough more recruits to form a third team. The diamondfrunners this time elected Mary M. Gates, Dorothy Hussung, and Esther Herchenroeder as captains. If this spirit is kept 'up, some time in the future L. G. H. S. may have a real school baseball team. . 1 T 2-4 ef--f J- ' ,g,.gg3?3f .a'i3iQfet,?, 'ess l ' Agfiwr' I gi- 1 ' 'tidfaf -ifzdl. -.af-v:,,':2Af:Yf: -ff ffs.. .. The first team was started in 1924, with Miss Jones as coach, Miss Beck as her assistant, and Lillian Eggleton as captain. Then began the rivalry between Atherton and Girls High for the city championship. That year our rivals forced us to admit defeat in a score of 2f1. In 1925 our team took a new lease on life and began working like Trojans under their new captain, Georgia Miller. Miss Frost whipped the eleven into fine shape, and on December 4 Atherton was downed 2f1. Day after day in 1926 the teams, Miss Frost, and her assistant, Miss Margaret Schanz' enbacher, would hie themselves to Shawnee Park and battle up and down the field, pref paring for the great game with A. H. S. On November 12, Emma Keats Crutcher, the new captain, led her team to victory over Collegiate, 4f2. Seven days later our team def feated Kentucky Home School 2f1. But when we met Atherton, the result was a score' less tie. Never was a harder game played, and never has a team fought more desperately for the glory of its school. The teams had two mascots that stuck with them faithfully all through the season. They were Emma Keats Crutcher's 'LTubby and Lucy Hagerty's Blue Goose. But the teams themselves-ah, that is by far the most important. First Team Positions Emma Keats Crutcher .... ..... G oal. . . SusanWall ......... Dora Allen ........ jean Allen ......,.. I always knew that Elsie and Adele had great work to do in this world. To Virginia Pipes goes the honor of the coreless apple. Won't that simplify apple' eating, though? After leaving high school, Louise Lehr devoted her time to the study of spinach. At last she has obtained a variety that is perfectly free from sand. No more nerve'grating grit in your spinach now, thanks to Louise, And speaking of spinach reminds me of our other vegetable improvements, the podless peas and topless turnips, grown by Roberta Weigel and Lucy Hinkle. Oh, there's no doubt of it, our girls are 'real laborfsavers. Then, there's the Herrick jumping Beans, put up with or without tomato sauce. Wouldn't you just know Dorothy would enjoy working with jumping beans? One of the most remarkable features of our stock is the peelfless banana introduced by our Helen Ryan. just think of the lessened danger of its being dropped on the ground. No more wild falls on sly banana peels. You've probably heard of the Schechter, Roadcap and Sewell Strawberry Combine. Well, these magnates, who have such a corner on the strawberry market, are our old class' mates, Lena, Louise, and Malinda, and they are the producers of the seedless strawberry. Naomi Jordan, Grace May, and Dorothy Marattay have at last obtained a tea extract that is very enjoyable to the old folks and entirely safe for the young. No need now to deny Junior his tea. But the greatest honor goes to Freeda Miller, the inventor of a concentrated dinner. This article comes in the form of a mediumfsized pellet and is guaranteed to have all the nutriment of a regular meal. Cur clerks, Flora Meyers, Kathleen Snyder, Ada Louise Thompson, Edna Terry, Katherine Koop are kept exceedingly busy, for Estella Sotsky, Irma Tharp, Esther Stiltz, and Thelma Stivers are regular and valuable customers. So you see, Helen, we are progressing with all of our oldftime high school pep and enthusiasm. just visit us and recall old times. Lovingly yours, S. F.
