Firm hands held the car unswervingly on the straight, gleaming road, dark eyes shone happily, and white teeth flashed startlingly between smiling lips. Q Fun to race before a storm, he sang out joyfully, but I hope we make ole Doc's before it breaks. Sorta' slow driving in rain, and if it is thundering very hard, I might not hear him say, 'Wilt thou have this woman to be thy wedded wife,' and that would be awful after waiting this long. What 'cha saying, Sport? The girl drew a long, quivering breath of pure rapture and laughed as the dark- ness split in a terrible tongue of fire. Love it, Dave, and love you. I wish you could see the fascinating way the lightning edges each massive cloud in flame. Oh, Dave, I get so tense with ex- citement that I want to let go entirely and add my voice to the plaintive one of the wind and dance and bend, and-yes, even break, as the trees dance and bend and break beneath its violence. I-I-oh! I love it! And she threw back her shoulders and lifted her head joyfully, and a sudden rushof wind touched the boy's, face lightly with her hair, and he caught his breath exultantly. The lone star trembled and disappeared, the distant trees stirred fearfully, and the wind moaned about the speeding car. One blinding sheet of Hame, a sharp answering roar, and waving torrents of opaque rain tore from the burdened clouds in black, bending fringes, covering all the ground with snow-white, torn, smoking rags of capricious steam. . Don't scream if we skid, ole dear. , I The girl laughed in the thrill of utter abandonment and brushedf the strong, rough shoulder beside her with her lips, in answer. The glaring headlights ate through the rain and darkness mile after mile, while the wind shrieked around the car and the heavens were shot with fire and filled with thunder. Trees moaned and stretched their arms o'erh'ead, bending and breaking beneath the fury of the elements. And still the car sped on. I . The road led past an old farm house on the right and a sheer drop of fifty feet on the left to the bed of a former rock quarry. An ancient wooden fence served as a protection for tourists from the yawning rocks below, and Dave smiled as he remembered its eaten wood. And yet they raced toward this place of terror with smiles on their lips and joy in their hearts. An old man in a rakish night cap sighed as he stood at one of the windows of the ancient house and heard one of his beloved trees snap and crash across the road, and then wearily resumed his snoring. I-Ie stirred slightly as a speeding car bearing its precious burden of human souls, each filled with the love of life and all its dangers, struck the fallen tree, swung around and hit the old wood fence. There was only a small puffinglsound as its rotten beams gave way, and then a horrible crash as the old rocks received their victims. A girl's white face and out- stretched arms gleamed strangely against the dark rocks, her body bent and broken beneath the violence of the storm. As a hawk pauses over its prey, so for a minute the wind sang softly over the still form, and then the storm raged on. V. Thrilling events last night marked the de- cision of the winner of the beauty contest. The three uneliminated entrants were: Miss Alis Shanks, Miss Dorothy Heick, and Miss Annie Ferry. Miss Ferry, as the moment of the decision approached, concluded matters by strangling the judges with her bathing belt. Ten years ago Miss Edith Win- tersmith invaded Europe with her travellllg companion, Miss Eleanor Jett. Miss Wintersmith has been repeatedly en- gaged to Count Sapolio Spagetti, the maca- roni king, but now it is rumored that the alliance is off, due to the fact that the Count was arrested by the 'police of Gumbo for speeding in his gondola. A direct cable from New Zealand tells us that rumors are abroad regarding Miss Jett and the Prince of Whales. You can rely on at least one or both of these topics being expounded by the valedictorian of every class. Why should civilization mean that the more men learn the more carefully guarded the poor females should become? Life has come to be just one boring cup of tea and one d as pow er puff right after another. In the Stone Age when the man went to hunt, his mate went with him, they wandered through the ferns togetherg side by side they hunted and fought' each step of his was hers, the savage man and savage woman ventured free together and labored course, there were slight differences in the home when Mr. Savage would take Mrs. Savage by her flowing locks and yank her over the boulders. But after she had been made to spend the night in the Forest Primeval, she would realize that you can't expect a real man to get along on only two bears and a barrel of potatoes at breakfast. This proved quite effectually that he respected his little playmate very highly, and it was only his great respect for her that caused him to take such drastic measures. They were playmates and equals-they conquered the wilderness together and divided the spoils. But today the poor little female has to stay at home and be pampered and petted, while a none too husky-looking husband goes' out into the unknown as her champion-I suppose-and has all the fun. Now this is really a dire tragedy that civilization should bring about such woe. Since the men are absolutely not to be relied upon in this, our great and terrible crisis, it is up to us women to rem- edy the education of today. So, friends and foes, one and all, much as we hate to disillusion you, our cry is-Backward, backward to the Stone Age, the Hg leaves, and a glimpse of the Great Unknown free together-and were contented. H. G. S., and last of all came the Freshmen, glad at the thought of High School, clutching shiny new pencil boxes and brand new tablets, with the owner's name boldly written on the front. The Freshman, our class of '23, was a record-breaking one. We literally absorbed knowledge. No lesson was too hard for us, no difficulty too great. During our Freshman and Sophomore years we studied hard, bought tickets for the Senior plays, had crushes, suffered in crowded street cars, bought sandwiches and chocolate bars in the lunch room, clapped vigorously in chapel, loved our teachers, backed all school enterprises, and came through the most difficult time of our lives with flying colors. Then our Junior year arrived. When are we going to have a class meeting? was on the lips of every Junior. Finally Marjorie Boyd, the Senior president, called an English Five class meeting. What thrills went up and down our spines! In the midst of much excitement, we elected Eleanor Jett president, Helen Parks, vice president, Elizabeth Carter, secretary, Ruth Wimp, treasurer, Annie Ferry, cheer leader, and Adele Wilkes, pianist. At last we were really a class. Many and varied were the prophecies concerning the class of '23, and we have fulfilled them all. After a long round of work and play came the dance. We had an enormous crowd, and everybody declared that she had had a wonderful time. The Seniors gave us a lovely boat ride and we took stacks of pictures. Then-our Senior year! We chose our officers: president, Eleanor Jett, vice president, Mattie Ellis Gregory, secretary, Angeline McCrockling treasurer, Helen Brooks, cheer leader, Annie F erryg and pianist, Geraldine McNeely. It certainly takes talent and skill and good hard work to give such a production as When Knighthood Was in F lower. The only shadow which darkened our school life was the tragic death of our dearly beloved Professor Moore. He was our friend and well-wisher in all our successes and our sympathetic advisor when difficulties arose. In memory of him our class purchased a hundred dollar bond, the interest of which will furnish prizes in an annual short story contest. Our high school career was coming to an end. Those who had vowed that they weren't going to have class books succumbed. Gay books bulging with pic- tures, newspaper clippings, invitations and everything imaginable were on every hand. Fountain pens were in demand and words flowed freely., We had im- portant class meetings about announcements and flowers. Trophy cups came into the school in a dazzling array through our efforts. We went to the Junior- Senior dance and boat ride and had the best kind of a time. Then exams in a queer, rearranged fashion, graduation with the additional thrill of graduating from the Rialto, a snowy white diploma, the banquet-and High School was a thing of the past, a wonderful memory. President's Farewell And Finis is written at the end of the varied history of this, our class of '23. just as the Faculty and the rest of the school are getting used to us, we go- and leave them in the lurch. For four years we have worked, and successfully evaded work, listened to their teachings, and made them tjoyfully happy by the surprising and unexpected turns in our dispositions. So now we leavewthem- leave them, pining away with no appetites, long faces, and a gap in their hearts which cannot be filled. ' A There is no gap in my heart, 'no empty feeling, for there is not room for it. Two hundred girls and the memories of things we've done together fill up all the space. And now, graduation, the biggest thing in our high school life,.marks the close of it. The Senior play has long been over, and Class Night isa thing of the past. For how many class nights have we rehearsed frantically class song and yell-only to have the cheer leader put out of office the day before for as trite a thing as cutting! How many times have we appeared to find the pianist or the class colors or some other necessity sadly lacking on the festive occasion! How many class nights have we graced with our attendance only to discover in horror our '23 standard waving gloriously over a section of chapel occupied by a startling collection of mothers, friends, youths, great-aunts, and grandfathers! Perhaps one, determined class member arrived at six o'clock, and by violent and determined efforts had managed to save one-half of one row into which she evi- dently intended to herd the two hundred members of the class of '23. Then came our class night. We watched the other classes struggle, and the student council members trodden under foot, and we wished we might be trodden. But we were dressed in white, and treated with an undue courtesy-a courtesy inspired by the knowledge that we should have one last fling-and then pass out. There has never been anything which has filled me with quite the same feeling I have now. It is the greatest privilege I have ever had to be able to express to you, the members of the class of '23, my love and appreciation of all you have done for me. The history of our class has been unusual, and there are perhaps few class presidents who have had quite as interesting a term of office as I have had. When I was first elected class president, I had just undergone that vital and serious operation of having tonsils transferred from throat to glass bottle. Someone kindly informed me that the class had never dreamed I would ever come out from under the infiuence of ether! But I did, and even under those circum- stances I appreciated the honor you had given me, and loved you all for In our Senior year, when I was re-elected, you will probably never quite realize the feeling it gave me. I walked on air for weeks to come, but air is thin, and I soon came back to earth. 'I-'Tiff 4: A 'I,,4,,. Suddenly someone has cried out to us, The race is over, and we have stopped breathless to listen. We have put aside our books and toys, and are waiting, for what, we do not know. Surely it has not been a half hour we have run, and yet they are telling us that It is over. Our half hour of high school life has passed by us, and we were not conscious of its going. We have struggled uniiinchingly over the rocks that lay on our path as we ran, we have not turned to look back- ward as diversions on either side tempted, or have we once turned our faces from the goal. And now that we have crossed that shadowy line that marks the goal, and have not yet quite recovered our equilibrium, we look around us at our friends that. have run with us, and we wonder, Who has won? The classof 1923 entered the high school with a determination to prove their mettle, to learn as much as possible, and at thesame time to have as much fun as they could. We have tried to meet our obligations as a class, as individuals, as students. How well or how badly we have succeeded we do not know, but the white line that marks the path is behind us, and we are asking those who know, Who has won? And while we wait in silence and remember how we have striven and faced always forward, the answer is borne to us, perhaps by the evening breeze, from the far-off distance, and it seems to whisper, Everybody has won, and then it adds, clearer still, and all must have prizes. At the outset, all advertising was design- ed merely to get attention to the thing one had to sell. It was based on the assumption that the man whose atten- tion you were seeking to attract already wanted the thing you had to sell. All there was for advertising to do, under that estimate of the practice, was to tell people where they could get things. But, in spite of the fact that a great deal of the same kind of advertising is done these days and in spite of the fact that a great many advertisers still may think that is all there is to advertising, telling where to get the thing that's for sale is the smallest part of it all. It is a necessary part of advertising, of course, particularly when an advertisement is selling some specific item, but it is the smallest part. No business and no profession ever gets away from its fundamentals. The minute it does, failure is certain to begin. Of couse there are many staple things you' know will be on sale in certain stores and the advertisement does not need to specify. You have already been told where to get such wares. Nowadays advertising undertakes to do much more than it once did. Telling where to get something, telling you how good it is, telling you how cheap it is, are good as far as they go, but making you want to buy something because of the pleasure or benefit you will get out of it is still better. And that is what adver- tising seeks to do today. Ministers have been exponents of modern advertising for many years. They make you want to lead better lives by Showing you how much more you can get out of life on a higher plane than on a low one. And in the same way adver- tising is a great force for better living, more helpful, more wholesome, more healthful and happier lives because the man with things to sell which add to the comforts and convenience of living is continually showing you in his advertising what they will do for you. And there is a big opportunity for women in the advertising field. As in any other calling or profession a great deal of the work is routine, some of it nothing but drudgery. Yet there is opportunity for much real service to your fellows if you take up advertising as a life work. You can do much more than the average individual to contribute to the sum total of the world's well being, and this element of service will do a great deal to make advertising satisfy as a career. fNinth and last of a series of talks on business that have appeared in the Record during this school year, designed to help the girls who will enter business to get a better understanding of the special work they take up.j ' The Franklin Printing Company INCORPORATED WADE SHELTMAN, President 416 West Main Street 'Louisville, Ky.
