A school girl's heart is most perverse, As you will know when you read this Verse. She often says, When this is past, And school days all are gone at last Then will the happiest time begin, I'll fame and admiration win. But after many a happy year, She will look back and hold most dear The days of checkered shade and sun She passed at school- 'Twas lots of fun. While she recalls her girlhood years, Her ideals, hopes and Heeting fears. She will remember best, I Vow, Alma Mater, and will say, now. With you I spent my fairest hours And gathered girlhood's shining flowers, You showed me how to work and play In the best and most unsellish wayg You gave me friends who still are true, And I find what homage is your due. Alma Mater, 'tis now I know, You are thc best of my Along ago. Through all our checkered school day , A thread of silver gleams In all the shady by-waysg It cheers us with its beams. The thread is that of friendship Which runs from heart to heart, And Marjorie weaves the patterns gay, Of school girls' life a part. How short the journey has been after alll How full of interest, obstacles and fun it has been! When we started on the long road, how far away and almost impossible of attain- ing seemed Senior days and graduation! Each year, however, the way has grown easier and the goal nearer. At first we were beset by many small fears, doubts and disappointments. We were so very young and green and trusting. We suffered from the pangs of crushitis and ignorance. In spite of these drawbacks we learned to imitate our beloved and awe-inspiring upper classmen friends, and before we knew it we were invested with all the self-confidence of juniors. We thrilled over the new joys of an organized class and the things it brought, and were filled with our own importance. Finally we entered the sacred portals of Seniordom and with it came all the joys that we had anticipated so long even though they were slightly tinged with the sadness of the knowledge that they were our last and that the goal had been reached We look at the treasures gleaned from that four-year trail. Some of us have found leadership, some of us knowl- edge, all of us friendship and valuable experience. We stand ready to go on- on down that unexplored road. VVe look at it with eyes filled with eager anticipa- tion. With the knowledge and experience we've gained these last four years we feel ready to travel on, adding new experiences and lessons to our store. May joy and courage and happiness attend each and everyone of us down that long, long road of life. S. M. ll. -. However, it is so remote that I've never been interested in it a bit-until today. Today I received, by radio, a message that the Class of 1922, the most wonderful, illustrious class on earth, is about to graduate. Such an event! By the dynamic force of its importance, the news has reached me. I am burning with curiosity, consumed with impatience because-because in a few moments I shall hear all! Even now, methinks my trusty radio has begun its tale. Let us listen! PF if if llf 14 ' 4' 't and so we came into High School, Freshmen. If it had been possible to come into High School as anything but Freshmen, we should have come that way, for you must remember we were an exceptional class. Indeed, so superior were we that in order to welcome us and make us feel at home our first term, they abolished exams-temporarily. Needless to say, we profited by this ultra kind- ness and passed safely from Freshmendom into the satisfying realm of Sophomore- hood. Of course, there were crushes-there always are-but most of us passed the crisis without evident damage. As Sophomores we did our share towards making ourselves agreeable to the faculty and to upperclassmen, or at least we think we did! We did more than that. We did up our curly locks and let down our girlish frocks, and became quite wise in the ways and customs of the school. Most people think Sophomores are un- bearable. We know we weren't! No. and we're not conceited, either! Our Junior year! The true beginning! We discussed, argued, talked, planned and discussed some more. We were going to have our first class meeting and elect our officers! At last our cups of happiness and importance were filled to the brim. We had our election and chose, with much ecstasy and more than much excitement, Marjorie Boyd, Evelyn Watts, Katherine True and Eugenia Herrington for our ofiicers. And that year, for the first time-for the very first time-we saw the genuine performance of class day! It was an occasion! We sang our class song and gave our yell and were enveloped in a fleecy cloud of bliss. Then came the dance! It is not necessary to tell what kind of a dance it was! -punch and all !-when the very Seniors had to admit it was even gayer and peppier than their very own. Of course, their boat ride was wonderful, glorious. We took pictures and ate and drank and danced and-well even the rain couldn't dampen our enthusiasm! Then, our junior year was over. We came back, but, strange to tell and contrary to all respected and honored precedents, we came back looking more youthful and less dignified than we went. . Vg-Y3? 39 1 Z'iT!' f': -EMG. . It was rather unbecoming of a Senior! At any rate, no one can say our class was old-fashioned! In spite of it all, we were Seniors! We realized it, and We impressed the fact, or tried to impress it, on all who were not Seniors. First, our rings came! Words are not that can express the thrill-the rapture. !?!?!!!-yes, that expresses it! If we wore them rather conspicuously at first, we crave pardon, for you must remember that we were not versed in the art of wearing class rings. Any display of rings was quite unintentional. Then came the Senior election and with much ado came the announcement that Marjorie Boyd, Florene Kelly, Nelle Stone and Eugenia Herrington were the officers. Well, all we could say Was, Three cheers -and we really meant it!! How time flew, mid-year class day passed, mid-year graduation passed, at last we reigned supreme, honest-to-goodness, real-for-sure-enough Seniors. Again time flew until, one day, it was announced that our play was going to be Come Out of the Kitchen and that tryouts are to be next Monday. Tryouts did happen and, after four short weeks, the play also happened! It didn't just happen -it throbbed, it exulted, it lived, it rejoiced, it triumphed-but-it ended. Two days such as had never been-a wonderful play, two wonderful casts, and four performances that couldn't have been equaled! And then, to cap it all, will we ever forget that Mr. Fassett said it was the best amateur play he had ever seen! It was just too wonderful! On April the tenth, Monday, we dragged ourselves back to school, reluctantly, sleepily, but still wrapped in the play. The play was the thing! Soon, how- ever, even the play began to step, just a tiny bit, into the past, and we began to think of graduation. We ordered our announcements. It was the beginning of the end. After a few short weeks, came our last Junior-Senior Dance, and the last, glorious boatride, and our last-exams. We passed them triumphantly and, for once, a bit reluctantly. Our High School days are gone. Only gradua- tion remains and then- Jk Pk Pk JF FF How disappointing! I did want to hear it all. When, in the future, we look back to the years spent in this dear high school, and the precious memories of those days come rushing to us, we shall realize more fully the true value of each moment passed here. To the school we owe a debt that we can never pay. The sympathy, interest and untiring efforts of Mr. Moore, Miss Stewart and the faculty we shall never forget, and we hope to show our true appreciation by the character of the lives we live in days to come. I shall remember always the kindness and assistance given me by the faculty. To the Class of '22 I can never express just how much the privilege of being your president has meant to me. It was a pretty picture they made sitting under a great old beech tree in Dr. Layton's yard. The girl was dressed in a crisp blue ginghamg on her skirt spread before her was a large leather book and she was pasting in it dance programs, news- paper clippings, pressed flowers and kodak pictures. The boy, in dirty white trousers and a shirt with short ragged sleeves was lying on the ground, grumbling over the fact that he had found but two four-leafed clovers in all his seventeen years. You've been pretty lucky at that, Gerry, the girl surmised, as she pounded a clump of straw in her memory book. I'll bet there's not another person in this town who has traveled as much as you. At this moment the porch screen slammed and an elderly man strolled out across the lawn. In his right hand was a letter which the girl eyed eagerly. He gave it to her and as she poured through its contents the man and boy watched her expression in a half amused, half puzzled sort of way. Suddenly she scrambled off the ground and threw her arms about the doctor's neck. Oh-oh-hl she exclaimed. Uncle Precious, Gerry, I am thrilled to the core! The boy looked rather bored and said. Well- It's from Alice Ainsworthg you remember the girl who stayed next door last summer? You weren't here, Gerry, but goodness knows, I wrote you enough about her. She wants me to visit her in Canada this summer. Isn't that heavenly? Gerry! isn't it, I say? H But the boy didn't agree. Well, I'll be blamed. Here is the first summer I've been home in years, and you go off and leave me. How long does she want you? july and August. Dr. Layton stroked the girl's hair. You'll have an awfully nice time, honey, he said, 'ibut it'll be lonesome here in the old house without you. Gerry won't let you be lonesome. You come over just lots, hear, Gerry? And in the meanwhile I'll be writing you volumes about my escapades in a fashion- able summer resort. ' 5' 'hyggq ifwgfv ff! 1 W'-QL We ' ' ' ' ' ' ' .L-'-hlifxrf' Iii E.: Q. - ,N .-- , .,.. .I One hot afternoon in August two months later, the boy turned in at Dr. Layton's gate and found the old gentleman lying in a swing at one end of the vine-clad porch. What's on your mind, boy? Pull up that rocker and sit down here. Dr. Jim, Gerry began, I'm worried about Anne. Let me read you a part of this letter: ' Gerry, I literally feel myself growing up and I think I'm about full grown now' You can't imagine how much I've learned about life, and what peculiar old-fashioned ideas I used to have. Gee, I was narrow-minded. Funny, isn't it, how you out- grow your ideals almost as you outgrow your clothes. This crowd up here is typical to magazine storiesg everything is the same from country clubs to that detestable word-flappers. For example, the girls all smoke, but stop and think, where is the harm in it? Boys don't get criticized. I always swore up and down I'd never become one of these so-called modern people, and yet, Gerry, they are so interesting. I'm simply dying to do something diferent. I want to come home and wake the old town up--perhaps do something terribly daring and give 'em all a glimpse of the outside world. Wouldn't it be fun to shock Mrs. Smithfield Weatherly? ' The boy paused and glanced towards the swing. The doctor's expression hadn't changed. Well- he drawled, is that all? Noi this from Gerry, doggedlyg it makes me darned sick, though. Anne will come back a changed girl. Boy, you mark my word, she will not change. I'm afraid you haven't much faith in her. Can't you trust her? Gerry hesitated, and then blurted out something he had heard often from the lips of older men. No, but you never can tell about women! Anyhow, I'm through now. I've been getting this kind of a letter for the last month and I'm not going to be the thrown-over-one when she comes home. When you write her, Uncle jim, I wish you'd try and explain. I don't know how. And with this Gerry Hung off the porch. The doctor looked over the rim of his glasses, smiled, and said to himself: The selfish young cur. A few weeks after this Anne returned. She was full of her good times andiher gladness to see Uncle Precious again, and had forgotten Gerry for the present. The third evening she was home she asked Dr. Layton about the boy. What had happened that he had changed so? Why did he write such disagreeable letters and what made him stop writing? Where was he now? I guess he'll be over in a few days, honey. He'll explain. That reminds me- Anne, I want to ask you something. Will you answer truthfully? Were there any,-did you like any especial boys in Canada? Oh-yes! Heaps of 'em. There were Bob Ainsworth and Reggy Che lived in Englandj and Tom Ware and Philip Saunders and- At this moment there was a peculiar sound around the side of the porch. The doctor coughed violently and then said, ' Yes, yes, my dear. Of course-safety in numbers. Now tell me this: Did you ever smoke? Well, once, the girl began, I tasted a cigarette but it made me sick and I hated it. Otherwise I've never smoked in my life. But, please, Uncle jim, do tell me about Gerry. I am beginning to miss him terribly. Do you know, there wasn't a single boy in Canada who, I thought, measured up to him. The telephone in the doctor's office rang and Anne was left alone on the porch. A few minuted passed and then another peculiar sound was heard around the porch. The girl sat erect and clutched the arms of her chair. Then in a loud whisper she heard- Anne! Who is it? she called. It's me. still a whisper. What do you want, Gerry Walton? Oh-gosh, Anne, don't be so hard on me. May I come up? Silence reigned, and finally the girl called softly: It depends on what you have to say for yourself. I've been a cad, I want to apologize and-explain. ' ' Well-I guess-you-can.
