We are standing at the parting of the ways, with h-HPPY d3YS behind US, and happy days before us. It hasn't been so very long since we stood trembling at the high school doors, dreading to put even one foot into that mass of strangers. We were so little a part of the fun all around us. But it wasn't long before we were in the whirl of good times. The twenty class had Hpepl' from the beginning! We've gone on year by year, adding each month to our store of joy. Oh, We've been a happy class! And nowthat our last days together are over, we don't want to shed tears, we want to smile! We want to go onward holding our happiness high. That happiness is our most .precious possession. It is that we are going to guard as we leave our school days and go out to find our individual paths. Our happiness is not going to tarnish in the bewildering rains of life, because We are going to have our lamps in constant use, letting them shine out through the dark- ness as a symbol of hope to others as well as to ourselves. It's a perilous work we have, keeping our happiness bright-and it's harder than it seems on first thought. To be happy through all trials, to remember that the road leads always to the best, to recognize our debt of service, to realize we are of value only as long as we give to our world-mates joy, to have a smile to meet a frown, a laugh to replace a tear, never to lag back, to help those not as strong as We, these and many others are the oils which we must use to keep our lamps burning. W Fgith such lights the world will never be dark. WVe'l1 see the pits and not falter. e step right over the stones. We ll pass our fears without ever a shudder and fgrget them in our eestaey at seeing the goal. WVe're not going to light for our P ELCCSS 111 the world. We're going to get them with a smile! But if at a dangerous crossing our lamps .become blurred, 'll l' a '- earth will seem gay again. The world's not a bad place. There are spots here and there that are, maybe, not as smooth as the rest, but those are just little places to test us, to make us ap- preciate the light. A SO the Class Off 1920, with its lamps held high in the air, will iile out into the vast unk 1 - nown with a teari NO, a smile for the world! we ift our heads and be happy , then the , M. B. A. An old lady once stopped a high school girl on the street to say, This is the happiest time of your life, my dear. Of course, the school girl, thinking of tests, reports, detention rooms, algebra problems, and other horrors, did not think so. On the contrary, she hrmly believed that school days were anything but the golden dreams celebrated in songs. Yet if she had been a Senior and about to graduate 5 ' C C Z5 2 what a different point of view hers might have been. For when a girl reaches the proud heights of English seven, and sees her class ring sparkling on her finger, and occupies the long-coveted Senior section in chapel, she begins to realize that the law of compensation holds good. Now at last she is getting her reward for all those years of work at school, for those hours spent in cramming instead of enjoyment., for those tables and formulas and vocabularies she has learned by dint of such hard studying. Her reward is the glory and the honor of being a Senior in the most wonderful class which ever attended L. G. H. S. As the months of her last year at school fly by, every girl sees clearly that high school is a dear old place, and that all its teachers are the kindest and most sym- pathetic in the world. She knows that she will miss every nook and corner of the big red building which has been her home for the last four years, and which will soon be her home no longer Then when class books flourish on every hand, and each Senior writes tender sentiments in every other Senior's book, each girl realizes how sweet and dear her classmates are, what a wonderful time they have all had together, and how much she will miss them all after graduation. XV hy, of course, those four years at high school have been the happiest in her life! She forgets all the sorrows and disap- pointments, and remembers only the joyous enthusiasm and youthful happiness of her undergraduate days. The play, the boat ride, class day, all those Wonderful experiences, have Hlled her life with so much gladness that she will always look back on her high school years as the very, very happiest of all. The harbor is a lovely place to be, And those Who brave the open sea must strive Unceasingly, or they may not survive. Yet who would linger there eternally? The nestlings are secure Within the nest, But ere they know the ecstacies of flight, They must confront the dangers that affright, And' all go forth, unfaltering to the test. Oh, We are ready, and with eager eyes A We Watch the dawning of a broader day. What suffering shall come to us, what prize Be ours, We do not know. When the mystic haze of years shall have changed the happy school days of the class of 1920 into golden memories, every little school experience will become a priceless jewel to be treasured more as the vears flv bv. Those anxious moments in trying to avoid discovery on our way to the bakeryg those mornings when startling street car wrecks would fail to satisfy our long- suffcring Miss Stewart: the faked headaches to gain admission to the rest room, when one was trembling at the mere thought of appearing in class with an unpre- pared lessong those dear little crushes who followed us around most faithfully, all these happy times. along with innumerable others, will be those happy memories to be treasured more and more as we go on our way. We cannot overcome the feeling of sadness that comes to us on the eve of our graduation. In the eyes of the world the class of 1020 is bidding farewell to its alma mater, but in reality it is taking from those whom we have learned to admire, respect and love, ideals and inspirations that will live on forever. XYhat the future holds for the class of '20 we can but dream, yet, judging from the wonderful talent and ability displayed in different school activities by its mem- bers, and from the splendid four years' training under the supervision of Mr. Moore, Miss Stewart, and the faculty, we feel sure that some of us will reach the highest pinnacle of greatness, and have our names inscribed in the hall of fame. To this dear old class I shall owe in after years some of the pleasantest memories of my life. The thrill of being elected junior president made me extremely happy, and later, when the honor of presidency of the most distinguished Senior class was bestowed upon me, my gratitude and appreciation could not be expressed. In future years when I look back upon this time, when I tried to direct the affairs of the class, I shall remember with untold joy the loyal support it gave me, not only as a whole, but as individuals. There were always those who were ready to lend a helping hand and assist cheerfully in anything that had to be done. To the girls of 1920 I cannot express my appreciation of all you have meant to me during these two years I have been your leader, through your love and sympathy you have made them the two happiest years of my life. As time goes by and each one of you wins laurels in your chosen fields, no one, more than I, will watch with keener interest the success which I cannot help but feel will come to each and every one of you. Here's all the joy and success to the class of 1920, the best class in the world. 14 '. ., 4' Yqlf. Each scratch in the hot sands pertains to your life, and it is of you whom Abou thinks as he meditates on our questions. eo Abou Dahn Gopal, knower of all things, tell us in your Wisdom what Ethella Goettel will do in the years to come. -As the spirit moves my old fingers, the word comes that Ethella will be the owner of a Paris Fashion Shop, with Louise Boden as her business manager. -Abou, we bow before your knowledge, what will become of Nellie May Gabhart? -Owing to Nellie May's executive ability, she will be the manager of the Red Sox. -And will Martha-Bryan Allen go on with her editorial work? -Ah! the message comes from the astral plane that Martha-Bryan will marry a prominent theatrical producer after a successful career on Broadway. -But shall we have no editors? -Yes, the stars in the heavens give forth the assurance that Nora Lee Williams will take to the blue pencil, with Jacqueline Franke a cub reporter, and julia Mor- ton Bohannon the clever cartoon ist. -Then Abou, greatest of seers, tell us what our president's future will hold. -To the girl whom all have loved the winds will always bear happiness and jov. From the minute O'Gorman entered Mrs. Leadbeater's boarding house until the final scene between Lancelot and Mary Ann, we gave a finished produc- tion! But how could it have been otherwise with such casts, a perfect coach, and a beehive of school girls wanting to work? Can we Wonder we took Louisville by storm? It was impossibile even for outsiders to resist the call of our posters. The tired- est business man was almost compelled to take notice of the casts' pictures in the downtown windows. We are sure that Adrian Henry and Elsie Greenup will have no trouble in real life drawing the men from the billiard room. And now, dearly beloved, let us speak of Corrine Morgan, Who, under the guiding hand of Providence. played the Rev. Smedge so convincingly in both casts.
