DECK APE Topside seamen, known as 4'Deck Apes, are consid- ered the backbone of the Navy. It is these men who master the arts and lore known to seafarers since man first roamed the seas. The handling of lines and tackle, care of wooden and metal surfaces, knowledge of the winds and tides are but a few of their forte.
