Each day he spent here was a day doing what he considered to be the best of all jobs. He took great pride in knowing - usually by first name and hometown - all the students and how they were doing. Returning graduates headed for his office to visit and report on their experiences. And they got in return his complete attention and recognition. Dr. McElroy died Thursday, November 3, I988, at Schumpert Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was Associate Dean of Admissions, former Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at LSU Medical Center School of Medicine in Shreveport. Dr. McElroy was born in Shreveport and was a graduate of Byrd High School. He was the son of longtime Shreveport residents William T. and Effie Shaw McElroy. He served three and one-half years in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy, in various actions in the Pacific Theatre during World War Il. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from LSU in I949, and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. ln l954 he was awarded his Masters degree in Physiology under Dr. Maurice Visscher at the University of Minnesota Medical School and received his Doctorate in Physiology from Stanford University in I958. Dr. McElroy left his position as Associate Professor of Physiology, Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and returned to Shreveport in I967 to accept a position as Associate Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and appointment as Assis- tant Dean of Student Affairs at the then fledgling LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He then became part of the original group which helped organize and turn the concept of the school into a reality. Dr. McElroy was also honored to have had the privilege of being among the school's founders. He considered that and his ongoing role with the school as his life's most meaningful accomplishments. Dr. McElroy chaired the school's Committee of Admissions and Student Affairs, beginning in l968 and l969, respectively, and became Professor of Physiology and Biophysics in l97O, and Associate Dean of Student Affairs in I972. He held a number of distinguished appointments including Honors Fellow at Stanford and Fellowships from the American Physiological Society, which designated him Profes- sor Emeritus. His other memberships included the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Medical Society and the Shreveport Medical Society. Dr. McEl- roy also published numerous research papers in basic science studies on heart and circulation, respiration and metabolism. His other interests included music, history and fine arts.
