The months that followed were a collage of midnight hours in anatomy lab, anxious speculations over Z-scores, afternoons on the softball field, and neuroanatomy case studies. Now, as the mornings of physiology draw to a close, we are the Class of 1988 -- friends who have shared fears and aspirations. lunch and histology notes. friends who share the growing pains of evolution from students to physician. February buried us in a flurry of exams, a veritable blizzard of inquistion. Spring- time found us in Medicine class, weighted by the heady realization that next year's multiple choice would present as a real, live patient. Laying out to catch the rays meant a quick nap before returning to check the chart on your H S P writeup: a night off began at 10:00 p.m. Again and again, whether in the rhythmicity of autumn exams or the first fetal heartbeats heard in spring, we heard the melody. and it was unmistakable -- the new year was quietly teaching us to leave the familiarity of the classroom, to become doctors. ,...--1- '9 'a mbaw ua , S, 4 .M 'a V gf., AA. if ts rf eff 4 4 .1 ' 4 , ct 'N nf' 'ei X ' f , , 4 , , W ' AL.. 0 78 Classes ............-....................,...l...,..u.........,.....-.A M-......,1.,...,W--..........l............s.,..N.u,fM,,fn.,...,...l.u...........M ,+.4Lc...ti M... .... Juniors We are a class of transition. Behind us are the bright white lab coats of those uninitiated in Physical Diagnosis and notebooks with the faint scent of the eighth floor. Ahead of us loom senior rotations. The Match. and yes, even graduation. So here we are. seven groups of diverse people, trudging through the sleepless waters of Medicine. the murky meanings of our psychiatry pa- tients. and the never-ending flow of scutwork. We are in the adolescence of our education, that gangly stage when the over- flowing lab coat doesn't hide furtive feelings of inadequacies. but each day brings lessons and slowly accumulating wisdom. Today, the face in the mirror is that of Student: tomorrow, it will be Doctor. emo t f e ,-,., . ft MRM, 88 ' Classes l I I 0 'R' ,.M, M, BQ' ' 'ol XM -'X U: Kata af. iv U!,.4 IQ s A , ' X J 'vt 1 ,Q . vi Q N X Q '34 fra 5? - ' , f Qing., W gay V ' ' if mia Juniors ' 89 N350 'W 90 0 Classes YV lil Ml! is !f.4i mm 4 Qgks Q 5 s 'lisa !!1lL ' m!JF,!!!lllH4'l W ,,, w i Q W ASK .Q A if 2. .3 4 Q 53 Q s , 5 5 4 E iz , nfs A umm-. . , . D. pictures captured youth and determination in our eyes. Now. our eyes tell the stories of teachers who have shaped our transition from students to physi- cians: professors and attendings, certainly - but then too the infant held in our arms as he breathed his first of life, the friends and families who insisted that the children within us revel in warm April mornings. and the elderly patient who taught us that healing holds more meaning than diagnosis and prescription. The lessons have been long and sometimes lonely, but the wisdom we have found is sweet. The art of healing is now ours, and we begin tomorrow as physicians. 98 Classes 1 'K is K Q ?'- Deirdre Yvonne Barfield, MD LSU - Shreveport Internal Medicine William Hart Benton, MD LSU - Shreveport Pediatrics Harold Ryan Bicknell. Social chairpersons Bryan Demarie and Francis Robichaux and their committee did an admirable job with social events such as the Casino Party. Christmas Dance. and crawfish boil. Spyrie Mays labored to prepare the new Student Llnion and throw TGIF soirees as well. Brent Bankston offered athletic events to stu- dents and spouses and welcomed our families to Family Day activities. Clancy Boudreaux and Ted Lenard extended the services of our weight and exercise room. Henry Hollier improved the already popular Tiger Trot. a chance to exer- cise. exert. and experience exhaustion en masse. Mike McCarthy and Tom Gaddis orga- nized the successful Blood Drive and Drug Fair. ln keeping with the family atmosphere of LSLIMC, Bryan Demarie and Melanie Buttross assisted in the planning of FroshfSoph Day and the FroshfJunior Liaison. Improved Communication among students. their leaders, and faculty members was a prior- ity within the Council. Another issue which faced the Council was the financing of the floun- dering Synapse. Administrative areas of the Council were coordinated by Barry Martin and Blaine Borders. while Connie Templet repre- sented the students in the highly publicized residents' bill to obtain pay raises. Perhaps most significantly, the Executive Council was responsible for LSLlMC's response to the as- sessment of the General Professional Educa- tion of the Physician QGPEPQ report. Led by Robert Fortier-Bensen, students and faculty members pondered changes suggested by the GPEP report. 152 0 Organizations if ? T. .v4i6IQ.:,,, V' . ,,,f ff- ele. The Medical Student Section of the AMA serves a vital role in our education as physicans for the 21st century. for it is the student medical society which functions as a source of information regarding current issues which will affect the future practice of medicine. The Medical Student Section fulfills this role by participating and offering speakers and seminars to supplement the student's education. as well as by providing an opportunity for the meeting of minds of students in both the clinical and preclinical years. 1984-85 officers were as follows: President: Keith Mayfield. Vice-President: Richard Broussard. Secretary-Treasurer: Jimmy Morris. Delegate to AMA Conventions: Kurt Belgard. Organizations ' 155 B.S.U. The logo of the Baptist Student Union shows arrows which point in toward the center and out from the center. This symbolism expresses the overall purpose of BSU as a ministry which relates both to the inner growth of a person and the growth which comes through reaching out to others. Based on a holistic understanding of people, BSU seeks to facilitate this growth through the students' participation in a variety of events. Among the regularly schedule events, our weekly noon luncheons facilitate the development of personal relationships among students. The relaxed atmosphere provides a welcomed break from the stress of classwork, while program leaders provide refreshing and stimulating topics for the medical student's reflection and consideration. On a lighter side. BSU also sponsors numerous social events throughout the year. Hayrides. cookouts. seasonal parties, midnight bowling, and a yearly snow skiing trip highlight the social events. On a more serious side, BSU also endeavors to facilitate the student's spiritual growth through the weekly luncheons as well as our special conference on medical ethics. Held once a month, this event helps the student integrate theology. medicine. and ethics as they seek to present a meaningful Christian witness to their patients and colleagues. if iff 'fif ,yrr 2 .iff ,.,.w m - , 5, W., ,. X Famll Practlce Club Family Practice - as an attitude, career. and specialty - was the theme of the LSU Family Practice Club in 1984-85. Under new leadership, the club set out to promote attitudes which would build appreciation for the spirit of Family Practice. A number of luncheons were held where speakers gave informed talks on medical ethics. financial aspects of running a community practice. and future potential for family practice as a specialty. An open file was set up in Room l-302 which included general information on Family Practice residency programs throughout the nation. ln an effort to give students every advantage in residency selection, the club hosted a wine and cheese social for residency recruitment. Response was tremendous with 10 programs from 5 states. Students found it both enjoyable and enlightening to speak on a one-to-one basis with residents and faculty from these programs Thanks go out to this year's officers Bill Kergosien.
