Most of us are familiar with the widely held public opinion of the medical student as the dedicated young man, or woman, who has forsaken all other interest and pleasures of life to pursue the challenge of the medical world, in order to master the skills of the physician. Once mastered to a degree deemed adequate, the medical student must use these skills to provide the service of health care to his fellow man in the future. Only by this selfless dedication to the pursuit of knowledge will the student be capable of making the transition to physician. ln many cases this is an accurate summation of the life of a medical student. The long hours of Stu- dying, voluminous amounts of tedious- ly detailed material, the segregation of relevent and irrelevent facts and con- cepts, and the endless hours of mind- less ward work can eventually cause even the most dedicated of students to believe that he or she exist in an abyss within a brick prison, locked away from the world outside with no avenue by which to channel the sequestered emotions and desires common to all human beings. lt is at these times that the student truly appreciates the sim- ple pleasures of life, and may find him- self- rescued from his yoke of servitude by the variety of activities that general- ly mark the good times of ones ir' medical career. Whether it be a lunch at BSU, a Friday night movie, or a spe- cial event such as the Casino Party or Crawfish Boil, all of these extracurricu- lar activities serve to relieve the ten- sion and stress of the daily routine. Some would say these events re- store their sanity, and others would comment that they provide the oppor- tunity to relax and properly assess ones present situation, and to plan for the future. 8 v Activities K ,W . . ,Y M -rw yt .
