What Brings You To The Hospital Today? The question which opens almost ev- ery patient history has been echoed throughout the hospital thousands of times, but it also applies to the many others who come to the medical center each day. Medical care is not the only commodity to be obtained here. Every year a hundred or so individuals arrive not to receive treatment themselves, but with hopes and aspirations of giving as- sistance to others. Many come to the medical center daily in an effort to im- part to students the knowledge and skills acquired through years of experience. The ability to ask that leading question "What brings you to the hospital to- day?" often requires more than the abili- ty to speak. gg- ' --'xp F., ll UPN 'WK li xiii, , ,g 0? How Long Has This Problem Been Going Un? The time interval between the onset and presentation of a patient's disease process is almost always critical. Many times the prognosis and treatment of acute versus chronic problems differ. Likewise, time has an effect on the pa- tient care plan. There is a difference in the assessment and differential of a pa- tient's status to the medical student, in- tern and resident. With time comes ex- posure and experiences which so often mark memories much more permanently than any written text. The phrase "a learning experience" is diagnostic of good medical training. 6 In troduction lill- 1942? ,f VBFW' ' . ..W , . . 51,5 .L , -.fu "ir: rifsw - ...M - -...I k K ,,-W. - ' -Q , . ... .... . , , ,, . ..:..,. .r 5- 5,151-gg.-:.:-:.:-.:.a-' .141 .!.........'T'. 1' :':M:,,L :':g:.. :U ,.4.. -.1 ...... .M QW, -.B W M.. ."'v'...- .,.. uv... -...V vs.. Does Anythrng Make It Better Gr Worse? Often the pain associated with disease can be further aggravated by activity or position Also, many times pain can be lessened by a particular act such as the example of a decrease in peptic ulcer pain noted with food ingestion Comparative ly the day of a medical student can get off to a bad start with the aggravation of lost lab work eaten lecture tapes or late rounds. But there are times when the outlook gets better. A satisfactory grade on a test, a snack a rousing card game or a smile on the face of a patient previous- ly too sick to smile can often make a bad start better. A-53? . Introduction 09 I-low Par Can You Walk Before You Get Short Of Breath? A great number of the patients pre- senting to the Medical Center have car- diopulmonary difficulties, making this question all important. Not to be over- looked, however, is the freshman hurry- ing to be on time for Neuro lectures, the junior attempting not to be late for rounds again, or the call team dropping everything to run through the wards at a "Code 99" page. A day in the functioning Medical Center is hardly ever slow-paced for the students, nurses, and housestaff. Many miles are covered in the space of each day whether it be in order to answer a page or to perform any of the other multiple necessary tasks. .4 'IH Ogg I A, If 10 In lroduction f i vga-V V X 'K x ,EEF Q'f"'.!"' 1 1 41 f 1 , 11 K 1 kki 1X A 1 gli A -W" , 1143111 W Y 1 aug, 11,4-vig .owL,,,, 1-I f1 nan - ,, EJ 1 - 1,, r 1 N -lv pn- ,. Occasionally some of the stu- dents consider this idea philosophically during their free time and elect to do some experiements with human models. Whether involved in ethanol experimen- tation or not the free time of a medical student is always well spent. Family friends, and creative interests allow di- version for the medically oriented mind. Occasionally the best escape is a good game of pool. Introduction 0 13 Losing Weight Having Pevers, Or Sweating At Nlght Lately? These are the first three questions on a patient's Review of Systems and point to the possibility of severe systemic dis- ease. The astute physician attempts to pick up on any important signs or symp- toms that may help direct an appropriate workup. Every year, Dr. Loewenstein in- structs sophomore students on the fine art of history-taking. The soon-to-be medical interrogators are reassured with "Eighty-five per cent of the time, the pa- tient will tell you what is wrong with him." The hard part is asking direct questions in a manner which will uncov- er the patient's total medical problem. tee- M I' f 'ah 14 Introduction all' . my N: X Mmm M X., 1 i 8 5 2 1 Q f If rl is r r , r JI.. -1 5 wk' ""h..n 4 E 4 1 if A X . The lake was a source for lucky souls to catch some unlucky lower life forms. The "Dude" and "My woman" would be out Sat. nights, We would try to rejoin what they cut in their fights. Minieblocks came in late November, And our group got smaller, we all remember. No one let a lecture get in the way Of hunting for deer or ducks any day. Casino party marked the end of that rotation. We lost our money and went home for vacation. After our break, we started on Peds, And found out most of what a Crumb Grabber needs. The patients did fine, MS IlI's not so well, Most of us went home feeling like hell. We had all the diarrhea and pee we could take. Thank God it was time for a Psych break. Psychiatry was really quite a different service, The fact they were like us made most of us nervous. We gave 'em Haldo, Thorazine, and Navane, Then fixed what we messed up with a little Artane. The field trip to Central was our big treat. By the time we got there anything would have been neat. OB was our last new experience to be had. We all found out delivering babies wasn't too bad. From wards to clinics to L and D, Some Budding OB-GYN Dr.s we began to see. A few of the lectures were really a bore. We were looking towards June and being MS IVs. ,353 We had many experiences and learned quite a lot, Like buffing and turfing and which nurses are hot. We made Comp Care like good little Doc's. We didn't want our head on Ike's chopping block. When the year is up, We'll be one step away, From that glorious event they call Pay Day. Ted Ledet When the year begins with ten weeks of Medicine, there is little doubt that one might feel "pressured from the very beginning" and indeed we were. A sordid group we were, more like mix-n-match flatwear than fine silver, but functional nevertheless. The following memorable quotes can be matched to the column of names at left. 1. T. Grand 2.. B. Procell 3. R. Lahasky 4. C. I-Ieseman 5. R. Wong 6. R. Ballard 7. 1. My parents are American and I don't speak Spanish." gl "11:15I The Young and Restless started 15 minutes ago!" We were determined to become refined clinicans in the spring but "Big Byrd said we didn't have to." Only one thing is certain. Now, for all the learning experiences we ingeniously evadd, "we only cheated ourselves." juniors 0 99 100 ' juniors 8. ,- .,,..-A.. 4 , 5 , if B5 BQK 321 ...A- F ff, ,4 ,H Q in- c 3 K f I f 59 N +- UNIORS za Rx bw" 1 QQ 'A ' X , gi I if w ,I I X i Q Q .M gi., P J ,ag f 191 'A M ,am W , A fr V' -A . , . 1 ' ...V f. 1 As' gn' N .. ,V .. 5 U We, in Group 3, learned that the real world of medicine proved to be much more enjoyable than the previous 2 years of academics. Much of our energy and unity, however, came from humor f the times we could laugh at ourselves and others. On Surgery, Scott firmly agreed with Dr. McDon- ald's belief that it's not so important what you say, as it is how loud you say it. Pat and Charles learned how to start a femoral IV on their first night of call. We also enjoyed Dr. Prank Anders' views on President Carter and lim even man- aged to jam to "Free Bird" with Dr. Lucas on Neuro Surgery rounds. We really Ahh . . . enjoyed Ahh . . . Peds, particu- larly 1:00 AM rounds. Oh Psych, we perseverated to the tune of "I wanna go back to Hilltop" with sincerely success- ful Patti and Celebrated Coyote's first-born son with ci- gars on the trip to Central. In OB, Mike learned the "foot on the symphysisn method for any OP delivery whereas, John and Brian learned to deliver three at a time in the hall. We entered medicine last - less enthusiastically than the other rotations but made it through with a lot of laughs. SQ- Af 'fx Group 4 began the year 5 weeks late but then we had quite a year with quite a group. Cindy, Les, and Jim were married early on, and John was chased by those wild women at Central. T.R. found OB quite revealing! Little Billy collected parking tickets while living on the 9th floor and eating at Southern Kitchen. And did J im really have Psych at the VA? Wei warned all the nursing students about Greg. Watch out for Killer! Thanks to Janet, we all passed at test time. And Keith, is there anything that he doesn't know about? Then there is Dickie and Steve, the cornerstones of the group. Not to be forgotten were Lee and Thayne, wherever they were. Juniors 101 ,Q JU IORS I V 3 K 'j ? W gg W . However, through this year we have learned to tolerate each others idiosyncrasies and also learned that perhaps we aren't so irre- trievably "different" Z E jf. if We , , i ' :sr y ,. We began the year on Psychiatry and ended on Pediatrics leaving our mark on every rotation in between. We learned much clinical medicine, but we also picked up on several obscure techniques - how to weigh a leg prosthesis by the differential method, how to prep and drape a male medical student for labor and deliver, how to begin an arterial IV, and how to take scrotal X-trays. In addition, we also became proficient at what is generally termed "scut." Although the root of this term is uncertain, the meaning is similar to that of other four letter words of its class. Our group was also noted for a particular sense of expectancy, andwe all shared in the joy of the coming of a child to one of our members. Thus, our experiences were set to a standard of variety. It was, in all, apvery good year. Juniors 0 103 ls, 33 ,- ,,.- K x xx' --Mi 3 dj as ff? The 'Nives' Club has been especially active this year winning at the start with a Bingo party for the new wives. The ladies kept a full calendar with participation in the Open Market at St. Vincent Mall in order to raise funds for Christian Services organization as well as initiating projects to benefit the Rutherford House. The annual Style Show set the stage for a fashionable spring. Educa- tional seminars sponsored by the club included a Lamaze tech- nique discussion for expectant mothers. The wine and cheese party was only another course in the club's well-balanced year. 'P 3' ll L V X vw s-cf X l 'X . " i T x , X s X .
