Are these the feelings of a patient anxiously awaiting his first encounter with a doctor? Perhaps. But they are also the feelings of a student doctor preceeding his encounter with his first patient. lt is definitely a mutual dread. But once a medical student musters up enough courage to open the examining room door and step through, the wor- ry begins to wane. Once he begins taking the history, and the patient's complaints and symp- toms loosen a few cobwelos from Pathology or Medicine or Physiology, the anxiety rapidly abates. The confused, unorganized facts from the preclinical years start to gel in the student's mind. He may actually surprise himself as he makes the diagnosis. lt is all part of the learning experience. The transition from preclinical to clini- cal medicine is a difficult one, but it is a step forward. fl ,,-2.7! gadsigisinif r - -4 .sf X V W, ' -. -J Eh .iriv- 4 Introduction Fi s. 7' ,AN X s 5 'ff L sa X You will discover that while the patient wants the best and most modern treatment available, he is also badly in need of the old-fashioned friend that a doctor has always personified and which you must continue to be. Students doffed their white coats and traveled to such exotic places as Denver, Acapulco, the Gulf Coast, Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, New York City, and Bas- trop, while Wishbone McCanless and com- pany took their annual trip to Ozone. Few people are actually aware of everything the Council does for them. Besides planning a Be- ginning of the Year Party, Family Day, a Drug Fair, and a Christmas Casino Party, the Council provides occasion- al TGlF's at the Student Union. The Council also holds a new faculty re- ception to enhance rapport with the faculty. The Council athletic chair- man arranges several sports tourna- ments each year, including golf, ten- nis, basketball, pool, and ping pong. A movie projector with screen and popcorn machine was purchased this year, and a program of free movies was begun. Arrangements were also made for several additions to the Stu- dent Union Building, including Ca- blevision for all of Linwood. The Ex- ecutive Council president represents the student body on the parking committee, the Council of Presidents, and in the Louisiana State Medical Society. Special thanks should be giv- en to the Student Activities secre- tary, Charlotte Singleton, for her in- valuable efforts in keeping the Coun- cil running smoothly.
