At times the road was not so rough The road we chose has yet another landscape. Here the countryside is covered with clover and lush grass, and has a thick carpet of what one might call wild oats. There is music and dancing and an ever flowing fountain of Bacchus' nectar, to which those who have labored greatly come to find release and renewal. 12 0 Introduction

lt was an humbling experience to look into that withered old face and explain disease or even impending death: to answer for the first time the chilling call of Emergency - Code 99 in the WIC, or to convince a frightened little boy that, yes, for the tenth time you need to draw his blood and that it will help him feel better. Sure doctor, catch me first! Then there are the other mo- ments. The ones of pure joy and de- light - when your stroke patient dis- covers that he can walk again, or a tearful mother sees her newborn child, or that little girl asks, Can l hold your hand, doctor? These are the times that help make those 3:00 AM routine admits, or getting grilled in attending rounds, or standing for hour upon hour during all manner of chart rounds and resident rounds and student rounds and general pur- pose rounds almost bearable. l Infrnrl 9 1 'I
