This year, all those students had many new things to see while making their trip around the room. First, everyone payed their respects to the administration and business office. Next, we all had that difficult decision on that offer for health insurance that you can't refuse! Our next stop were the tables set up by the various student organizations. This included AMA, AMSA, Exec. Council, Family Practice, and Synapse. These tables were there to introduce both new and old students to the activities of their organization, and to encourage participation. Then it was off to picture taking and home, except for the freshmen. This year an orientation program was run by the Exec. Council and the Office of Student Affairs. lt's purpose was to help enlighten andfor encourage those new to the ways of the Land of Hull. Hopefully this was a worthwhile event, and with some feedback will be even better next year. Oh, by the way, if things go well, you will be reading this as you walk around that room again 'fa ,il .,,,,-Qv,-4' R No slr that IS not Included in the fee' ag Ride Happenings v' r ,,. This took place at the LSU Medical Center on October 29, 1977, under the sponsorship of the Executive Council. Over 600 parents, wives, relatives, and students participated inthe program. The purpose of the day was to familiarize everyone with the facility at which we obtain our medicai knowledge in 4 short years. Many teaching departments put up interesting displays, and others also gave tours and demonstrations. lt was a combined effort that made it such a highly successful event. Everyone was duly impressed by the program, and hopefully gained some insight into what a medical education is like, Congratulations to the Family Day committee, and all the other students who worked many hours on this project. Members of the committee included Mike Dunn, chairman, Mike Buck, Chris Kaga, Johnny Gregorio, and Alan Borne. 93. ,Sl 1 Q'W F' Wing E. Council sponsored several get-togethers on Friday afternoon at the student union. Although not the most luxurious accommodations, it's facilities have served us well. Most students find Friday a wonderful release after a long week up the road. Nlost people relax and unwind, a few sort of explode, and some just get plumb wasted. However, everyone has a good time. If you missed out on the partying, see you next Friday! N'-...., fi? wumdilf Vx? nl -K 44? Q . mt ,Q-A ww 'f . wi uw X N f ea For Women in Medicine Dr. Dorothy Mack samples refreshments. Only thirteen of us were married then. Our children could be counted on one hand. Now we are tweritysnine married with seventeen and soon to be nineteen children. Each of us has matured and grown in medical knowledge and in our understanding of ourselves, our motives, and our ambitions. . We have been the last of the small class in the time that our school was making the difficutt transition. Despite the conflicts, we have estabiished a reputation of academic excellence. There is that quality of a family among us. We have attended our family weddings and have together welcomed the birth of our children We have enjoyed our plantation home as a family gathering for a reunion Our disappointments and joys have been mutual. May these bonds remain with us and strengthenrour efforts as physi clans. LMMC ' T T civiivic ' Flnwble Pediatrics Lake Charles Charity l.A Family Medicine .IT V353 DAVID J. CLEMONS, NLD. They spoke of lots of folks to heal, And, dreamily, we'd smile. Like little tykes on Christmas Eve When told to go to sleep, We cooled our heels and warmed our butts For two long years, to leap Into that sweet, sweet junior year Wherein we knew CWe knew! Notwithstanding nights on cally We'd see those dreams come true. We'd diagnose and treat the world. The wards would be a cinch. CAnd on your way to heaven, meet The man from Merrill Lynch.J And so September rolled around: We rubbed our hands with glee, Prepared Cwe thoughtj to hook that vein And ace that old IV. They pointed us toward J-wing And mumbled out some words. The strangeness of it all would pass Real soon, we were assured. Thus blessed, we bravely waded in, Like Moses' Red Sea splittin'. But waves were crashing high above - Forthwith, we were smitten. Choked in charts and lost in lab, ln H 81 P's, immersed. And X-rays just went floating by - We walled and gnashed and cursed. And did you start on Medicine, Clapped into 8J's Dungeon? Nevermore to venture out In daylight hours. And such Was our naivete then, although We swiftly learned the sources Of ultimate instruction: Ask The MICU nurses. Your patient's gorked? asked Doc Donet Then scan him at the Schumpertf' Nay, nay, exhorted Dr. West, Consider lumbar puncture! We listened, nodded, talked a bit, Decided we knew better: Regardless what we did Cor didn'tJ lt wouldn't really matter. Each resident with pipe in mouth, Each intern's face unshaven, Each red-eyed necktied student's wish For respite from this slaving. All to report each morning where The well-slept Grove would ask The sleepiest among us how Bowel gas is passed. But maybe you were blessed with Peds, That bubble-gummed fantasia Where each IV meant seven sticks, Then call the nurse to aid you. The workups were so easy when The patients were so tiny - Just poke and listen here and there, From fontanelle to hiney. And as each group rotated through The wards, 'twas always seeming That the same three DKA's were there, The same four sicklers, screaming. With self-taught baby talk, under Mama's jaundiced eyeing You laugh, they cry, you pat their backs And laugh, and they keep crying. Perhaps OB was more your style And made you feel at home fPerhaps you wear tight leather straps, And at the mouth, you foamlj Doth the labor tarry on? Then crushing rates a try. What sweeter music to the ears Than a lusty birthing cry! CLASS OFFICERS President Mike Pass Vice Pres Robert Hernandez Treasurer Joel Chapman Social Chairmen Bill Granger Chuck Gadpaille Secretary- Rich Valenziano But soon you learn the language there: Pop, pit and sedate, The primips howl for days, it seems. The multips spurt at eight. And did you take Psychiatry, Or were you at The VA ? You didn't like CMMC? Then Erwin was your draw. Diagnosis is so simple: Talking? Schiz, if not, depressed. And if he's inconsistent, why, You call it OBS. But really don't expect to see The psychotherapies On a service where generic names Remind you of a sneeze. Psych wanted you to be an owl, Surgery, a horse. lt seems the only sleep you got Was standing in OR's. A most peculiar way to live, Always on your toes. Just read and read and pass the quiz And buy some good Su pp-Hose. You've surgical ambitions, here? Essentials are, it seems: lj Pretend the scrubs aren't really pink, 21 Learn to like red beans. And through it all, the whole year long The dreaded Comp did loom, So scary in September, So comfortable in June. Your lab results were someplace else, The front desk's in a tizzy, The aides and nurses rushing 'round, Pretending to be busy. an The workup may seem plain enough But regardless of the gripe, You haven't finished up until you've Asked about her sex life. Then, ready for preceptoring, You search out one who's free, And state the case so as to match His speciality Maranto wants a failing heart, Henry likes 'em pregnant, For Sewell, if they're not depressed, No matter - he'll invent it. 'Twas the Bee Gee Year of Disco, Travolta and The Force, Luau parties, Wally's Follies, Surf 'N' Turf, N worse Perhaps the fluoridated water Nlade you feel so low - Some days you're meant to be a star Others, just a no-show. Despite ourselves, we Passed at last To senior groups, No Hunters, No more Studs or Good Ole Boys, No more wild-eyed Gunners. For grades we need no longer Depend on tests and luck. Now we're judged Con merit?J to be Kings and Queens of Scut. We've new mysteries to ponder, To find out what it means If spinning down this urine's The fulfillment of our dreams. Even the pointer worked. The clock on the back wall which I had studied more hours, longer hours than any textbook, studied me for a change. It was almost as if my face said ten minutes to five and the clock was wondering how Kirk and Spock had made out today on their own. But reality gave way to fantasy as the empty desks became filled with memories of nine months passed. It seemed that applause following a Constantinides lecture gave way to laughter which meant of course that the Silver Fox was expounding on the celibacy of the Hopkins and purple bottom gibbons. Dr. Pickering was there but didn't say anything. Dr. Kotcher said something but wasn't there. Bill Lanehart didn't say anything nor was he there. Yes, indeed, Bill is a smart fellow. I chuckled and felt the urge to dodge the snowballs directed at Dr. Daily while Dr. Jobe, a safe distance away, yelled, Let he who is without sin cast. . That's all he got out. Dr. Erwin hit him with a handout, then he took it back. I could see Dr. Redetzki shaking his head, walking away from a small fellow who kept poking him in the arm, trying to convince him that vincristine was a diuretic. I knew it wasn't real, but I was sure I could smell boiling crawfish and a case of cold beer. And, of course, among full mouths and matching mugs was a redheaded host asking if everything was fine. One fellow said it wasn't. Charlie suggested he change religious denomination and drink more. Drowning out the laughter were the merry minstrels of mirth and some nut wishing he were Hargrove. I had seen this guy before but I wasn't sure exactly where. It was either Laplace Dragway or IOth floor of Confederate. The show, no, the tribute that followed was excellent and made me feel good. And I saw the faces of those in high places, upon whose faces it is forbidden to look, and they smiled and rejoiced. Great was their joy in knowing that so few had given their time to express the thanks and pride of so many. And so great was their appreciation that everyone present, over three hundred in all, were filled with pride, and that which was in excess was gathered and filled three other classes. At that time the faces disappeared as I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. A dimly lit face flowed more clearly in the flame of his match while the smoke of his pipe formed halos about a bald and wrinkled head. Though some may say he resembles a bull dog, I believe he is Santa Claus well shaven. In any case, he smiled a fatherly smile, asked how I felt, what I would do this summer, and inquired about other et ceteras. Finally he looked away, staring where I had recently stared as if he too were seeing my instant replay fantasy. After some time he spoke, never breaking his glance. Your class certainly deserves its name. Of all the classes I have been affiliated with, yours may carry its label proudly. Confused I insisted, I don't understand sir, I wasn't aware our class had a name. But you just said it. I did? I'm still confused. I don't believe I catch your meaning. Class. Everyone of you in a group and individually has an abundance of Class. Whether it is the class of 80 or 81, I don't know and it is not that important. The number doesn't mean that much. The class and the people who made that word meaningful, this is what matters, now and 50 years from now. Remember, character is simply habit long continued. And you know, I believe it. It wasn't easy, though, the biggest sacrifice l had was giving up the social living of an undergrad. The course in Physiology was changed around this year We learned a lot from Iowa, as well as from folks here. The hardest course was Biochem, they shoveled to the class Five marathon exams that even Pauling couIdn't pass! The course in clinic made us feel like doctors like no other - We studied cancer, thyroid scans, and one professor's mother. The lectures were invaluable and were designed to show The class some patients and to prove how much there is to know! ln Dr. Kotcher's course we learned of plague and worldwide famine While half the class' attention was on sleeping and playing backgammon. I gained a lot from Wednesday class, aside from making A's - l'd better understand the role the family doctor plays. I learned that when you take a test you've got to change the date Three times or more -the day before the test is not too late. No matter how the vote, we'd change from one day to another, We got so good we almost blew one test off altogether! lVly favorite course by far was Gross - that goes for everyone I'm sure, since Dr. Reed is great and makes the learning fun. A couple of romances during lab helped to keep things loose, We're happy for both couples - Margaret and Jack, Sue Ann and Moose. We partied hard throughout the year when we could find the time, lt was decided studying on the weekend was a crime. Sometimes one must repeat the year -too bad, l'm sure it's no fun. This past year's Executive Council had several basic goals - better communications within the school, to increase student pride of LSUMC, and to improve outside awareness of the students QW - and the school. Numerous new projects were instituted to accomplish these goals. One of the biggest successes was Family Day, demonstrating to the family the inner workings of the school. A new Constitution and an Honor Code were passed, showing added student responsibility. Students reached into the community to help worthwhile causes and student representatives attended national conventions and spoke out for the student body at LSUMC. In closing, the year was very successful. With the help and cooperation of the students, faculty, and administration, lofty goals come closer to becoming reality. I SQ EXEC. This is a local organization devoted to broadening the social, intellectual, and political horizons of all medical students. Efforts include sponsorship of student members Q to state and local medical society meetings, as well as the national conventions of the AMA. The group's ultimate goal, then, is to involve medical students in resolving the complex issues and uncertainties which confront the medical community. The initial membership grew to over 50 members in the first year. The group was represented at the state and national meetings of the AAFP. A charter for establishing the organization was accepted by the state group. This club was founded to try to help students better understand what family practice is all about. While not all members of the club intend to become family physicians, communication through this organization will better enable them to make a judgement as to their future plans. .A Pictured above: QL to FD Melanie Martinez -- Rep., David Hudson - Pres., Kay Brasher - Vice Pres., Jana Schaller - Sec.-Treas. A degree of regularity was finally established, with monthly issues and definite deadlines, both made possible by a modest enlargement in staff. Some logistical snags in production were eliminated and, when possible, deadlines were coordinated with Exec. Council business to allow better communication with the students. Only limited progress was made in expanding the number of contributors, and some issues were plagued by a dearth of quality material. Still, a larger variety of literary and iournalistic work was published, and in the editors' unbiased opinions, the results were favorable. ...W swf' We Dolt m no 22, Q U 1 'J N! 5 Y ' I 4' K ,,,,,,..,,..9 v 'gwmlmsva Left: Greg Gaar, and Wanda Knight, Jr. and Fresh. class editors. h e-1 - 7 X 1 ' ' ' ' .. -. Phone 635-0511 Shreveport Louisiana I I I I I 'Mg First Dag on the Wards My first day on the wards, I learned about THE CHART. The.Chart is real important. If you didn't write on The Chart, then you weren't at the hospital. That's what my resident said. ' My second day on the ward, I learned what a resident is. A resident is a man who wears a little brown box on his belt. Now and then the brown box makes funny noises. Then the resident walks away. I think he goes to tinkle. The nurses love the resident. The intern hates him. An intern is an old medical student who does what the resident tells him. Both of them told me to write on The Chart. My third day on the ward I learned about the attending. Attending is a word that means an old man who walks around saying smart things. He has a gold-and-black thing that he keeps in his pocket for listening to people's chests. Cl have one, too. But mine's silver.J When the attending talks, the resident and intern shake their heads up and down, 'up and down. - ' My fourth day on the ward they gave me a patient. A patient is somebody who's sick. It could be anybody. It might be a cowboy. You never know. My patient was 83 years old. He had a funny little bag that dripped things into him, and another funny little bag that drained thingsout. Once inawhile he said bad words to the wall and the ceiling. Sometimes he cried. My resident said he was stone cold.deaf. Then he told me to take a history, I tried, but the man wouldn't talk to me.'He just vomited. So I wrote on The Chart. -- My fifth day on the ward, they mademe go to Comp Care, Comp Care is where people go when they're just a little bit sick. Dr. Henry - he's a nice man 4 Dr. Henry told me that I was supposed to get a senior, a preceptor and an encounter record. I didn't know what any of those words meant, but that was O.K., because none of them were there. Instead, a ladycame with her tiny baby. She asked me to look at her baby.--I did, and I told her that the baby looked just fine. ' She smiled and said I was a good doctor. Then she went home. I went home, too. . And the servants setfout to the farthest reaches ol. the land, spreading the sacred word amongst the leaders and the healers, and often drd they desparr, for none knew whence theycame, ,srnce the Port of Shreverwas like unto the Vale of Tears. Yet drd theylperservere, and drd not cease to speak highly of therr'home, wrth its rivers of gold and streetsof mud. And some drd not believe therr wordsgralndcast out thermessengersg for many are sought, but few are conned. Yet some there were who drd believe, and though.therr brothers cursed and mockediythem, .therriheadsrdrd not turn, and they prepared to leave their homes and travel the Krng's Hrghwav. ' T' W T ' j 1711. W f. 57 ' On the appointed day all were to gather and hear the wordsof Hull, forlthey knew of his wisdom and goodness and honor, and they wrshed to abide hrs words and foll-owthe thoughts of hrsheart. And these men were many, from all the cities of the land. Among them was William the Buck, he of the swift tongue and narrow gaze, and though he had tired of trading in used charrotsjyet he was esteemed, for he knew the ways of persuasion. And from the Orient came Charles, called Flrsorrus, for hrs face was fixed in glee, and none had ever seen his eyes. And among the teachers was Fleed, the Fisherman, who knew the body and whose wisdom spread among the students, as smoke from his pipe drd spread among them also, and he was given respect by all. And from the rungle came Kotcher, learned and possessed of the vermrn of the earth, and afflicted wrth, jerks about the knees. He cared deeply for the people, and the others thought hrm mad and communrst, for so' he was. And there was Grove, the Centurion. He knew now the lrlres of the field, but well did he know the finest of robes and the cleanest of chrns, and wrshed that all mrght see the good, as drd he. Yet he knew the ways of the body, and trarned hrs students well. Many were they, and filled with the thoughts of Hull, who sard unto them, l'Yea, and we shall gather here to burld a healrng-place, and soon our students shall be scattered by the wrnds to the boonres of our land, where they shall heal the people and their beasts. And they blessed hrm with hosannas, and spoke to each other, sayrng, Indeed, thrs man is holy and hrs words are truth. And their hearts were filled with gladness, for their pockets were filled with gold. Again Hull spoke and lard hrs plans on them, sayrng, Upon this plot-we shall rarse our building, and the lack of parking shall not prevail agarnst us. It shall be two-hundred cubrts in length, and fifty in breadth, and rt shall standrtall agarnst the wrnds, and rt shall be brown, as the earth, and there shall be no wrndows, for brrcks are cheap. And we shall place bars across the walkrngrway, lest the straight and narrow path become dusty. And we shall rarse a shaft rn our midst, and all who look upon rt shall feel its power. And we shall burld machrnes to rarse our people to the herghtsgand these shall be the swrftest in the land. And so it came to pass that craftsmen were brought from distant countrres tolabor on the tower. As the days passed they clrmbed hrgh into the heavens, yet .therr work was not pleasing, to anyone, and they were not content. And frnally their chrefs went to the elders, sayrng, Hear us, srrs, for we are greatlytroubled in our work. Yet they shook their heads, because hrs tongue was not theirs, and the elders drd not understand hrs words, for all had been grven drfferent tongues, and no man knew what hrs nerghbor was sayrng, and so rt contrnues to this day at that place. So the completron of the tower was uncertarn, and the leaderswere rn turmoil for frve-score scholars had come to commence their studies of the ways of-healing, and there was no room for them. Now the hundred were the finest youth rn the land, and they had bowed and scraped for many years, that they mrght be called to the healrng-place, and they were unwilling to spend their days rn rclleness. ' ' . 51QDurrng all thrs time Hull had grown old and wrshed to take leave of hrs work, and so he drd, and departed in honor. And he left his blessing on Isaac, and frnstructed hrmto care for the people and frnrsh the noble task. And Isaac was wise and able, good and kind, honest, thoughtful, hardworking, holy and blessed among men. As the Hundred rose rn one voice and clamored to begin, he said to them, Could you not remain patient with me for rust two months? Do not cry out, ohye of little faith. I say to youfonly trust rn your Dean, and all will be well. And so rt seemed, for they drd begin at last, though they were banished to a -stable, rn- the hills. Yet their work was difficult and frightening, for the parts of the body were as numerous as the stars of heaven and the fishes of the sea, and 'they drd wail and g-nash their teeth. ' , 'A ,Butfirially rt came to pass that the words of Hull were fulfilled, and the healing-place was frnrshed, And the brethren looked upon it in awe sayrng, Truly, thi-s-tsfabout what we expected. And all went forward to go inside, yet they were halted by the many guards, who sard to them, Ye shall not pass these gates rof.-pearltill ye show your badgesuof honor and utter the sacred words, and few could show therr badges, and none knew the words. Softhe guards drd slay ihtimgiall..-Butrsothlers came afterthem, badged and possessed of the words, and they drd enter, and all agreed that the elevators were indeed the swrftest rn the and, And the words they spoke to garnfavor were these. . :ll A S U A Q A Semper Practrcas-Famrlrasl -reprinted from the Synapse r. list, r' l I-l' lffi ww' r i,ji ir,r,,' rrzrrlll . lqirlrrr r'lrtl2fi..Q.j'r: 'V -r r lllll1il'BM!I!nlI!HlKWU9P'.1'UJILIHUVif.ilr ,lit .r lm! i .V V ., r iz. .rrr r. . .
