Huson Middleton, editor I..E1I'I'y Hiller, assistant editor Our Memories As everyone realizes, before any storm there is a lull. an eerie quietness. that portends the conflicts to follow. This was the anxious quietness we all felt at one time or another during early morning journies to the VA. The VA is where we all started. And next year. as we shall see. there will be a new school and new careers begun. But this book is not about schools - old or new. it is about the students. the faculty. and. . . our memories. We all want to recall those moments. both good and bad. that gave us our memories. And although the unhappy IT1GIT1OI'l9S DOVV OVS1'Sh3d0VV many of the good ones. the good memories remain with us longer. We Want to record these memories. . . both happy and sad. within the Pulse of the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. H. M. Bw F lb fr . What a year. But where does one begin to tell about it? Well, it's good to start with the best part of the year. No, no, you don't start with May 30 at noon. Let's start with the best part of the academic year. Fortunately, that's easy because Anatomy was our first class in more ways than one. Histology was a maze of rock-a-bye baby lectures, slides, and other intresting things, and, well, Gross was gross fso was the coffeej. The first quarter was, in truth, an effective mixture of ominous pressure, intense study Cwe hadn't discovered that it wasn't altogether necessaryl and enough laughter to retain a working level of sanity and good spirits. Winter brought on head colds, Christmas vacation fnever did we appreciate Iesus morel, and Biochemistry. That last thing is best summed up by a statement made in discussion of the Urea Cycle. As I recall, it was something like, We don't seem to be getting anywhere with this, do we? Neuroanatomy was great- our best lecture series of the year - and we all enjoyed it. We sure hate to see Ron go. Gross also finished up - a sad and happy occasion. Spring was all Physiology - take it for what it's worth. We were anxious to apply our Biometry lessons and weren't at all surprised to find the two courses of the same quality, although Physiology was a bit more time consuming. Our biggest problem, strangely enough, was telling which building the smell was coming from. Physiology, from what we understand, was much improved, and we deeply appreciated that. Whew! We must have seen it all, Huh. Vallecula epiglottica, frogs 'n warts, blue Sears undies, S100 keys, plain keys, the simple truth, the mysterious attractive power of Table 528, excitement at clonus, hip pocket information, blood pressures that go kaplunk in the night, closet gardens, the infamous rats of Building Five fall 3 of themjg Questions 411, 2, 4, 6, 12 on the Flex, intricate relations of hormones and feces, cadavers that move, the marvelous preservative powers of Vaseline, the dreadful punishment of the exam pole, various stools in Physiology lab, arrowheads, empty heads, and Biochem, Seven are they, seven are they. . . , the absence of some and snoring of others, and mounds of other information. But as an upperclassman put it- Wait till next year! L .Sh 4. SECOND YEAR STUDENTS THE OTHER TAPES - 1974-75 The class of 1977 held its second annual 9-month convention this year. Transcripts of the following meetings were made by selecting quotes at random after the protocol set forth by a former chief executive, now deleted. In keeping with past tradition, the final gavel was struck and again thrown out by another president, in hopes that another enthusiast could stick it out for nine months next year. INTRODUCTIONS FROM THE FLOOR Ah, Mr. Popwell. I can't believe that you thought that George Sand was a man. It must prove some deplorable demonstrable deficiency in that raw incisive intellect that only one so endowed as yourself from that glorious institution from the Far East would hope to possess, now and forever. As for George Sand, it seems she spread her particular affliction to others. . . So I told them to put it in Kotcher's old eyes. EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS Heroin addicts can be recognized by their pencil-thin pupils, and by the fact that once they get your confidence. . . This is not meant to encourage a smart-alec or astrological divination of the infecting organism. . . . They will consistently lie to you . . . I'll post a key to the micro exam first thing tomorrow. . . . until they reach that old age where they just burn out. Those TV sets get heavy. Prostaglandins may facilitate the transport of sperm through the uterus . . This happens in young kids engaged in mad passion. . . . by speeding up their passage. The farmer was irritated that they were running across the room and disturbing his sleep. All electives will henceforth be pass-fail. Cherchez le P. Do they want THE Dr. Manno? Who is married to whom? Speak, speak. PRETEST PREVIEWS This isn't a test-oriented series. What do you mean, you never had that clinic lecture? Of course you did. All I want you to know are the A-B-C's. Don't get schized out of your heads. It will come from the lectures or the syllabus. It will be from the second half. Plus stuff from the first half. SMA? It'll all be the basic things you already know. No, the two tests I've sold I've gotten too much for to xerox the rest free. NEW IDEAS AND PERTINENT DATA DEPT. Breast stimulation does not seem to be effective in men unless performed by a woman other than the subject's wife. CLASS OF 1977 My wife has positive skin tests to almost everything. Does a Penis ever stop growing? Who taught you how to outline in the fourth grade? Maybe Dr. Paine or Dr. Eichner knows. I don't. Me, either. WRAP-UP In spite of all the fussing about genetics, you all passed. I believe you've even learned the material better than the previous classes. As one young woman put it to me after years of uncertainty regarding her intermittent vaginal discharge as a youngster: If only you doctors would go ahead and examine! Fear of hospitalization is seen today as a realization that the safest way to be in the hospital is either as a visitor or wearing a white coat. One generally winds up giving an injection of oil and throwing the medicine away. We never, never b.s. you. Recording Engineer: Lane fexpletive deletedl Cook. Most of us would have preferred to have spent that time on the Island of Piggy-Piggy and would have done so if we hadn't needed the sleep. I-Iowever, the third year was, without a doubt, more enjoyable than the year of the handout tfreshman yearj and the year of the test fsophomore yearj. With rotations through psychiatry, medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, general surgery and the surgical subspecialties - ophthalmology, Orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, anesthesiology, urology, and neurosurgery each of us found one that seemed to be the thing to do. Once again I have been approached, to do a little chore A few about the year, for you to remember in '94. But it ain't all mine, I burned out two years ago, What follows to Brabham, Sholte, Slatter and Stage you owe! Medicine is to most people, the entire art of healingg to us it is a block, a specialty, an experience, a feeling! Special memories exist for all, but have common things to share, Attending rounds were a panic, the correct answer was never there! How could we know as much Endo as the Endoist, or GI as the GI'ist? Or how could we know all those lab values, and so on down the list. And when the attending talked to the patient, it was somehow magic Your 3 hour history was instantly obsoleteg so, so, tragic However, we all had our chance to shine, it happened to me and you The only trouble with it was, we shone with a reddish hue! On the wards it was much the sameg we were to assume responsibility You gotta get these co-signed first, before I can do anythinglegallylu We were to show compassion and help in direct patient care Dump the bed pan for me would'ya, and flush it over there. Finally we were to aid the housestaff and be their right-hand man Go get the X-rays, grab the lab slips, and round up the culture, ifyou can Medicine was one of our most important blocks, we'll remember those times As we go forth to save lives, stamp out disease and . . . rhyme! Now we move to Pediatrics, where the PC stands out high, And the good doctor Groshanic fparaphrasedl below, will tell you why! Welcome to the PC tBeepl, home of fBeepl leetle beety beebies fBeepl All of you men will be 'boys' again, fond memories for you to keep. You will need some supplies, things you must always carry, No-Doze, good track shoes, and a foreign language dictionary! Also include 1000 plastic syringes, and a map to the ABG machine And a book of Nursing instructions, good info for you to glean! If any complaints arise, you must remember to remain mute We're not interested in critics, and the chief'll give you the boot! And if you learn any facts, that will mean something to you, Be sure to tell your group-mates, for there'll be precious few! About the rest of the blocks, no one cared to write Miller about psychiatry, turned in a blank paper for spite! And surgery's still there, Frankie and his Bard-Parker And with orals at the end, your grade goes from dark to darker! And we all had Comp. Care, thinking it would be a breeze With no more grades to be given, we'd all make P's! We thought we'd see all the patients weid always known But as it turned out, we hardly saw a one of our own! For you see we only spent 6 months of the whole year With good old Mrs. Graves, that lovable sweet dear And when we were there, you can bet your dirty socks We got to see everyone elses' hypertensives and crocks. Yet somehow on occasion, through some miraculous fate You had no one to follow-up on some particular date! CLASS OF 1975 So while you were happy, and shouting with glee Mrs. Graves was in the WIC, hunting patients for you to see! And with all of the choices in that horrible zoo, Guess what she brings back upstairs just for you! lt's either an alcoholic who was terminally fat Or a runny nose attached to some screaming brat! Such is the poetry of good Dr. Brabharn, M.D. What follows was done by R. Stage, words of sheer beauty! We took the E.R. elective, and learned to cut and sew We saw a lot of skull films, what they showed we'll never know. The orthopedic surgeons taught us how to cast broken bones While the Urologic specialists made us experts on stones! ENT and oral surgery taught us to stitch lips and faces, And direct laryngoscopy to see in those difficult places! The ophthalmologists taught us all about foreign bodies And the general surgeons took the rest of the body! It was a good elective from which we learned a lot and it'll help us in the future, when we become real docs! And so ends this epic, it's gotta end right here I just want to wish all of you-all lotsa luck next year! As has been the custom in previous volumes, it falls upon the editor to scribble out a few lines, but, as everyone knows, a letter from the editor is read by almost no one except the editor. However, for those unique, enlightened individuals, I want to share with you the acknowledgements to those responsible for putting the 1975 Pulse together. The Pulse tsupplanting the previous title: Thrillj is the new name for the yearbook, so designated by the student body with some understandable resistance from the Seniors. First, I would like to thank those who helped us most in the administration of the yearbook. Mr. Robert R. Graves gave us many ideas concerning the management and operation of our finances while Phylis Cascio and Debbie McCain helped us send out letters and other correspondence. A special note of thanks goes to Phylis who handled the day-to-day work and gave our effort that special characteristic of continuity. Second, our faculty advisor, Dr. Ioe Penny, contributed many hours and much skill to our task. He provided the art work and also designed this year's cover. Third, the staff members themselves deserve special recognition. Diana Di lulio and Tom Deas, who provided new ideas and long hours, Gene Hunt, who helped provide us with the extra funds to put color pictures into the yearbook: and Larry Hiller, who took those color photographs, all deserve special thanks. Not only did Larry take the color photographs, but he also took over a thousand more in black and white and developed and printed them. This Spartan task gave us hundreds of photographs of the highest quality possible to use in the making of the Pulse. Credit must also go to Mr. William Dean for the photographs of the VA Hospital and Mr. Iohn Mosely for the students' photographs. Others taking pictures who deserve commendation were Foster Hensel, Laney Chouest, and Lee Mauroner of the Freshman Class, Ed Braud of the Sophomore Class, David Walsworth and Cliff Dopson of the Iunior Class, and Iimmy Moss for the tremendous effort on the Senior Family Album section. Iimmy was responsible for every picture. For the Class essays I would like to thank my brother Bruce, Lane Cook, David Carpenter, and Brant Casford. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Claire and my son David for their patience, and Marsha and Eddie for waiting. wa... ,L 5 5 it X A A ' v . 1 5 edical Student Wives Club The Medical Student Wives Club worked actively this year for charity, and still had time for social events.
