Growing With LSUS Picking i theme for I hi 1978 Bagatelle was easy — (irowth! To every student who attended LSUS this year, the university's growth was obvious: We had to — quite willingly, of course — walk around it. step over it. and adjust ourselves to it. The new I Diversity Center, begun last summer, is only a few months away from completion. While activity continues there, surveyors have begun site work for the proposed Business Administration and Education Building. Behind the power plant, more work continues on a new Maintenance Building, and the tennis courts — completed just this year — are already swarming with tennis buffs. Also in the planning stages is a Health and Physical Kducalion Building. Another form of growth was the addition of the Caspiana Big I louse to the campus, where it is being renovated to serve in the Pioneer I ieritage Program. Even our commencement exercise, held in May. was another growth indicator. The 1978 graduating class, numbering 348 students, was LSUS largest ever, and marked tin fourth consecutive year that the graduating class increased in number. The first thought of placing a stale college in Shreveport took form in 1937 with the late Malcolm La Fargue. who in an address to the Cosmopolitan Club advocated the idea in order to ... extend the facilities of the university (LSI J) for the benefit of the school children in ( addo Parish. 11 is suggestion. however, did not receive the necessary legislative support. Although a bill to locate a state-funded college in Shreveport was introduced in the stale legislature in 1956. it was not until 1964 that LSUS finally look form — if only on paper — as a two-year college. On Feb. 6.1965. the commuter college was established by the LSI I Board of Supervisors and Dr. Donald E. Shipp was named its dean. In December of that same year, the board approved $3 million for the first of a three-phase? construction program. In 1967. LSUS began its first session. During 1968. a campaign was launched that eventually led to LSIJS' status as a four-year university. junior classes were added in 1973. and in 1974 senior classes came into being. At the same lime. Dr. Shipp was named Chancellor. Indeed! LSUS has grown since La Fargues speech in 1937. Our University has become an asset to the community and will continue to grow. While glancing through the next few pages of memories at LSUS. try to visualize the university's first two years — isolated in a cotton patch on I lighway 1 — and then consider the growth that has occurred in tin? past ten years. And there is more to come?. . .
