To every student who attended LSUS this year, the university's growth was obvious: We had to — quite willingly, of course — walk around it. step over it. and adjust ourselves to it. The new I Diversity Center, begun last summer, is only a few months away from completion. While activity continues there, surveyors have begun site work for the proposed Business Administration and Education Building. Behind the power plant, more work continues on a new Maintenance Building, and the tennis courts — completed just this year — are already swarming with tennis buffs. Also in the planning stages is a Health and Physical Kducalion Building. Another form of growth was the addition of the Caspiana Big I louse to the campus, where it is being renovated to serve in the Pioneer I ieritage Program. Even our commencement exercise, held in May. was another growth indicator. The 1978 graduating class, numbering 348 students, was LSUS largest ever, and marked tin fourth consecutive year that the graduating class increased in number. The first thought of placing a stale college in Shreveport took form in 1937 with the late Malcolm La Fargue. who in an address to the Cosmopolitan Club advocated the idea in order to ... extend the facilities of the university (LSI J) for the benefit of the school children in ( addo Parish. 11 is suggestion. however, did not receive the necessary legislative support. Although a bill to locate a state-funded college in Shreveport was introduced in the stale legislature in 1956. it was not until 1964 that LSUS finally look form — if only on paper — as a two-year college. On Feb. 6.1965. the commuter college was established by the LSI I Board of Supervisors and Dr. Donald E. Shipp was named its dean. In December of that same year, the board approved $3 million for the first of a three-phase? construction program. In 1967. LSUS began its first session. During 1968. a campaign was launched that eventually led to LSIJS' status as a four-year university. junior classes were added in 1973. and in 1974 senior classes came into being. At the same lime. Dr. Shipp was named Chancellor. Indeed! LSUS has grown since La Fargues speech in 1937. Our University has become an asset to the community and will continue to grow. While glancing through the next few pages of memories at LSUS. try to visualize the university's first two years — isolated in a cotton patch on I lighway 1 — and then consider the growth that has occurred in tin? past ten years. And there is more to come?. . . The 1978 Bagatelle cover is a water color painting of the nonrenovated Caspiana “Big House’’ seen through the steel girders of the new University Center. The painting, by Fine Arts student Steve Dupree, symbolizes the old and the new, or in short, the growth of Louisiana State University in Shreveport during the past decade. 5 Every person horn into this world rep- resents something new. something I hill never existed her fore, something original and unique . . . every man’s foremost task is the actualization of his unique, unprecedented and never recurring potentialities, and not the repetition of something that another, and lie it even the greatest, has already achieved. Martin Huber Change. . . Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. Old Time is still a flying:” Herrick ■■■ 9 n M 16 STUDENT LIFE I 18 Student Life Kducalion is the development of the whole nature of man. physical. intellectual, and moral, through interaction with every phase of his environment. The importance of an active student life is obvious when one considers its rich contribution to both formal and informal education. During the past decade, great progress has been math’ in student activities at I.Sl IS. Student participation in campus events has grown parallel with the University's expanding facilities. The improvement of the social life of our campus is due to the enthusiasm of many dedicated students. Pressing obligations understandably require a large part of everyone's time, l or this reason. many students leave school as fast as possible. Participation in diverse campus activities such as lectures, dances, movies, and intramural sports can provide a rewarding escape from the routine duties one must perform. The quality of our student life will continue to improve with increased student involvement. Student Life has changed al LSI IS since 19HH. and so have ihe students. Within an academic community, organization enhances better communication among its public and systematically constitutes a common goal. Organization does not occur, it evolves. First, there must be a .cause within a group: second, a leader: and third, interpersonal communication. Through the past ten years. LSUS organizations have grown from eight small groups to some thirty fully active, independent clubs. Almagest. Bagatelle. SGA. Biology Club and BSU were formed in 1967 and are still active today. The former three, however, are the only organizations budgeted through the LSU system. Social fraternities and sororities have greatly influenced extracurricular activities within the academic setting and broadened their realm of service projects to include civic events. For instance. Alpha Phi. the first chartered sorority, was the first LSUS organization to sponsor the Muscular Dystrophy Danee-a-lhon. and they were soon joined by Della Sigma Phi and other social orders. Delta Omicron Mu (DOM), who promoted Toys for Tots during the Christmas season. Moa’ Afrika. who encouraged academic excellence among the student body, and the Government and Law Society (GLS). who acquire better understanding of our government, and the other dedicated clubs of 1976 are all prime examples of leadership in our university. The number of organizations has grown since 1968. (Top) Tlu 19( 8 Student Government Association officers are representative of the student organizations. The club is one of the largest organizations on campus and is open to all science majors who are interested in a medical-oriented profession and hold a 2.0 or better grade average. Throughout the year, we host representatives of the medical and paramedical professions who address the members. Also, the club members observe medical procedures performed in various hospitals. Each spring the club plans for an extended visit to a renowned medical facility to gain additional exposure to the various aspects of the medical professions. Eta Sigma Gamma’s officers are: Tommy Brown, president: James Zakris. vice president; Denise Myers, secretary; Sevetri Moor, treasurer: and Charles Kessler, historian and parliamentarian. Dr. S. Jimes and Dr. W. Brown are the organization's advisors. (Top) Tommy Brown president of the Allied I(calth Science Club speaks to the members. 89 (Top. left) Chuck Meredith. I 90 Bagatelle, the LSUS yearbook, has been published annually since 1968 to present reflections of campus life. Since its beginning, the Bagatelle has depicted such themes as time, knowledge, advantages of higher education and the Bicentennial. The theme of the 1978 Bagatelle is growing — how much the university has changed in the past ten years. Since 1968. the yearbooks’s page number has almost doubled to assure the students a complete image of their past year at LSUS. The Bagatelle Staff is composed of eight members. The editors of each section are responsible for writing copy, layout and editing. The photographers shoot pictures, develop negatives and print the finished product. The 1978 Bagatelle staff has sought two major changes. First, an LSUS student was hired to design the yearbook cover. Second, instead of employing assistant editors more responsibility was placed on the editors of each sent inn._____________________________________________________________________ (Top. lefl) Kent Lowe, sports editor; (Below) Mona Thome. Almagest Almagest, the official newspaper of LSUS. provides information for students and faculty and serves as a laboratory where journalism students gain practical experience in the production of a professional newspaper. Almagest supplies timely news, editorials, features, surveys, commentaries, entertainment and photo coverage relating to university and community activities. Most articles are written by staff members but the staff encourages student and faculty contributions. The staff presents an 8-12 page newsprint every Friday, excluding holidays and final exams. Staff members are involved in nearly all phases of putting a newspaper together. Almost all photographs, copy and cartooning are done by the staff. Advertising has more than doubled since 1974. Almagest enjoys a large degree of freedom in deciding what is to be printed in the newspaper and has experienced no problems with censorship. Responsibility for content lies with the editor and copy is not submitted to the faculty advisor for approval prior to publication. A L M A G E S T 93 Top) Mona Thome. Fall Editor-in-Chief. Lamba Sigma Upsilon is an informative and educational organization which offers valuable experience to the student who wants to become more aware of the natural world around him. The club was formed in 1967 and has since become one of LSUS’ most active organizations. Its goals are to promote widespread understanding of scientific truth, to broaden the scope of classroom education, to assist in the collection of specimens for the life of the Sciences Museum, and to preserve the environment. The Biology Club is funded by membership dues and solicitation of donations from area businesses and civic groups. With chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada, the Phis are a shining example of the warmth of sisterhood. Traditionally. Alpha Phi emphasizes character, conduct, and culture, along with scholastic achievement, love, understanding, individuality as well as unity, warmth and fun. The nationally supported philanthropy of Alpha Phi is the Heart Association. for which over two million dollars have been raised. The LSUS chapter. Epsilon Tau, is also very prom! of its support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The symbols of Alpha Phi are forget-me-nots. lilies of the valley, the ivy leaf, and Phi bear. All serve as reminders of the organization's many goals and achievements. The year’s activities have included active participation in the Muscular Dystrophy Dance-a-thon. the Intramural Powderpuff Football League, the Greek Formal, and the LSUS Battle of the Organizations. Through these activities and many others, the Phis have provided a place for college women to hang their hearts. and have given them a lifetime of love and involvement. Caspiana House, archives program, career day. and an alumni travel program). The Association has presented student awards for school interest and participation, sponsored a booth at the Louisiana State Fair, lobbied in behalf of LSUS' building and advanced degree programs, established a scholarship fund and held Christmas and graduation parties. PANAMA CANAL DEBATE (Right) Dr. Marvin Stottlcmirc: (Below) Dr. Milton Finley. Since fall 1976. the LSUS Government and Law Society has operated on the LSUS campus. A newlv created but not new organization, the club offers avenues for those interested in the fields of government and law. The advisers are Dr. Norman Provizer and Dr. Marvin Stottle-mire. who are both political scientists on the LSUS faculty. The objective of this society is to provide for the students of LSUS who are interested in political science and its related fields of study the opportunity to acquire a better understanding of these fields with an emphasis on career and educational guidance: and also the opportunity to associate with those individuals who have these interests in common, and such other activities as may be deemed necessary or desirable. GLS provides a seminar each spring for those interested in the area of law. In addition. we have guest speakers, bi-monthly meetings. and a few semesterlv socials. It is not “Washington Behind Closed Doors or Watergate. but it is a beneficial organization — even if you are not a political science or pre-law major. It is what we make it. and we can make things happen. The LSUS GLS is the place to be. The provisional chapter of LSUS was granted a charter by Kappa Alpha order on March 15, 1975. On February 7. 1976. the order granted an active charter and designated the 24 members as Delta Chi chapter. Delta Chi has always maintained many diverse programs, designed to offer a variety of interests. Rush is a very important part of the overall program. The entire chapter participates and results were especially impressive this year, as 18 new pledges were inducted. Delta Chi is unique in that it constantly affords the pledges an opportunity to participate in all chapter activities. Old South is certainly the most impressive activities the chapter sponsors as well as one of the most impressive on the LSUS campus. Each April finds the men of the Kappa Alpha decked out in the uniforms of the Confederacy and their ladies attired in antebellum dresses. The entire week is composed of special events, dances, and parties. The spring also finds the chapter involved in its annual Convivium. celebrating the founding of the Order as well as the birth of Robert E. Lee. This year will be a first as Delta Chi will sponsor the first attempt at a North Louisiana Convivium composed of all chapters in the north of Louisiana. The KA’s also participate in many other areas of the campus and community. Service projects such as Muscular Dystrophy and March of Dimes are an annual event in the chapter. As an organization, its purpose is to create a unit of brotherhood among its members. Through this brotherhood, its purpose of developing leadership in young men will be achieved. 104 (Opposite page, lop) Curt Campbell. (Bottom) Chris Smith and Mark Stephens. (Top. left) Ken Jones. Pi Sigma Epsilon was organized at LSUS in 1975 to give marketing enthusiasts practical experience in marketing through the planning and executing of projects such as the Telephone Directory published in September 1977. The club also benefits from meeting and talking to marketing people in their field. Such association often leads to better job opportunities after graduation because most marketing executives are members of its parent organization called to Society of Marketing Executives (SME). The Psychology Club was started in 1971 by a small group of exceptional students who were remarkably committed to the field. Though LSUS was only a two-year campus at that time. Psychology majors took the initiative in establishing a constitution and structuring the basic framework of the club as it presently exists. Most students at that time had to go on to LSU-Baton Rouge to complete their degrees. In 1973. when LSUS was granted four year degree granting status, the number of Psychology majors began to increase and reached its present level of 108 in the fall semester of 1977. There has always been an unusually full involvement between faculty in the department and student majors. Much of this has come as a result of the pre-professional activities outside the class sponsored by the Psychology Club. Student members have also been afforded an unusual degree of contact with professional psychologists in applied settings as well as noteworthy leaders in the field such as Dr. Bruno Bettle-heim. Dr. Paul Young and others who have appeared on their programs. A newsletter called “The Brainstorm has recently been initiated as a means of communication and information dissemination among club members. It is hoped that this will become a fine tradition. Also the Psychology Club hopes in the future to establish a Psi Chi. the national honor fraternity for Psychology majors. (Top left) Or. George Kemp and Or. S. Thomas Elder. (Right) |udy Taylor. Since that time its membership has more than doubled. The goals of this fraternity are many with each girl contributing to the growth and sense of sisterhood of the entire chapter. Zeta Tau Alpha has a well-rounded program of activities such as collecting funds for various nationwide philanthropic organizations, having an annual formal and hayride. participating in the various campus intramural sports, giving support to campus-wide activities, and throwing weekly get togethers for chapter members, their dates and friends. Zeta Tau Alpha strives to enrich the lives of its chapter members through friendship and sisterhood while making worthwhile contributions of time and effort on this campus and the i surrounding community. The club was reorganized in the fall of 1976. The goals of the club since that time have been to expand the members’ knowledge of chemistry outside of the academic world and to promote chemistry within the university. During its founding year, the first part was accomplished through guest lecturers, such as Dr. John B. Sardisco, Manager. Inorganic Chemistry Division. Research Department. Pennzoil company: Dr. Manos. Toxicology Department. LSU Medical School. In addition, there were tours of the Northwest Louisiana Crime Lab, the Flournoy-Lucas Water Treatment Plant, and the Pennzoil Research Department. Faculty lecturers were Dr. Bazil Catsikis and Dr. Ron Martin who spoke on their individual research. Also, club members attended the American Chemical Society section meetings. The second part was accomplished by the club's participation in College Night and the Louisiana Academy of Science meeting at LSU. The members of the club provided tutoring and advice to other members of the club concerning courses and graduate school. Through the club, science majors were able to buy reference books at discount. The club had several successful parties which helped to revive the spirit of the members. During the second year, the club mounted a drive for American Chemical Society Accreditation. Also, a plaque acknowledging the founders of the Chemistry Club was placed in the Chemistry Department. Among the speakers for this year were Dr. Frank Collins, who spoke on Laboratory Safety, and Dr. Westmoreland. Pennzoil Research, who discussed the solar fuel cells that were used in the Apollo Space Mission. (Left) Ed Micinski. and Julie Fischer. Rick Morrison. Wayne Morgan, and Johnny Rachal. Lois Herd. Moa’ Afrika now seeks to enlighten Black communities about the potentials of receiving a higher education at LSUS. to recruit new members, and to offer friendship to all students on campus regardless of color. Moa' Afrika has a continuous book referral and tutoring service for its members. “Moa’ Afrika means the descendants of Africa. In addition to debate, team members compete in oral interpretation, duet acting, oratory, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking and television speaking. Members of the debate team qualify for membership in Pi Kappa Delta, the national forensic fraternity, through intercollegiate competition in the various events. The LSUS team also sponsors three tournaments each year. Each October, visiting colleges participate in the Junior Debate Tournament. In November, regional colleges and universities attend the Red River Forensic Classic and in January, High schools from throughout Louisiana compete in the Pilots’ Forensic Classic. The debate team enters ten tournaments each year and competes in the regional and national Pi Kappa Delta tournaments and the Louisiana State Debate championships. LSUS debaters have won the State Championship in Junior Debate two times and twice an LSUS student has been the State Champion Extemporaneous Speaker. 116 Gail Rrily. Dr. S M.iria VallvGondm.in. Delta Omicron Mu (DOM) was organized in 1969 as a social, academic and civic readjustment program for veterans on the LSUS campus. DOM places its first priority as the academic excellence of its members. It strongly encourages brotherhood and maintains an active social calendar. DOM extends itself to community projects. The fraternity annually collects toys for the Christian Service campaign Toys for Tots and also aids in the delivery of the toys to the needy children. To meet financial obligations for the support of the DOM projects, the fraternity sells LSUS license plates. Their sponsors are Dr. Don Smith and Dr. Carlos Spaht. ASO. the LSUS Honor Society, was established in 1970 as an organization for outstanding students and faculty members. It is dedicated lo maintaining high ideals of leadership and scholarship in our university. It encourages these qualities by awarding honorary membership to those individuals who demonstrate leadership in their individual fields of study. Students nominated for these awards are required to have at least thirty semester hours of credit and maintain a 3.5 overall grade point average. An initiation ceremony and banquet in honor of the new members is held each spring, l-isl year. Mr. Buddy Roemcr was guest speaker at the banquet. In the spirit of academic encouragement. Alpha Sigma Omicron is also a sen-ice oriented organization. A20 participates each year in the I lonors Day Convocation and provides ushers at the I.SUS Commencement. A20 also strives to help students at I.SUS by offering a free tutoring program and by donating to the library. These gifts include S250 for the purchase of microfilms on which back issues of newspapers are permanently preserved, and $200 for the purchase of hooks. In coming years. Alpha Sigma Omicron will continue to maintain its high standards of scholarship and service in preparation for the possibility of becoming part of the National Honor Society. Its six founders were men of strong character, deep conviction and unusual ability. Roben Morrison, the founder, believed that these three characteristics were essential to the formation of a successful Greek letter organization. These are the qualities looked for today in a person joining our fraternity. When the Civil War came along, development of Phi Delta Theta was arrested, and membership in several chapters dropped alarmingly. However. thanks to the efforts of Walter B. Palmer and George Banta. the years from 1870 to 1890 saw a rapid growth of the fraternity. For these men's achievements, they were dubbed the Second Founders of Phi Delta Theta. Since that time Phi Delta Theta has initiated over 125.000 men and established over 150 chapters internationally. Our colony at LSUS was founded on March 13. 1976. with an initial membership of 16 men. Six of these graduated later that semester. During the first summer, our colony made plans for the fall rush activities and fund raisers. During the fall and spring semester, the members learned the lore of the national organization in preparation for our installation. Our motto, one man is no man. is more freely interpreted as we enjoy life by the help and society of others. Our colony believes that the cultivation of friendship among our members, the individual acquirement of a high degree of mental culture, and the personal attainment of a high standard of morality are the most important qualities of a strong and successful fraternity. Our fraternity's social activities include parties. Friday gatherings, and other weekly get-togethers among members and pledges. Our scholastic activities include weekly study halls and private tutoring sessions to help members having study problems. Our campus and community activities include the program to move the Caspiana House to LSUS. the faculty caster egg hunt, concessions for the state-wide debate team meet. Muscular Dystrophy Dance Marathon and the answering of phones at the Labor Day Telethon. In the future. Phi Delta Theta plans to continue to be a group of individuals dedicated to the advancement of ideals of the fraternity, increased campus and community service, and the support of the general scholastic standing of the University. The Student Activities Board (SAB) is a student oriented organization whose main purpose is not only to provide entertainment hut also to encourage recreational and cultural activities for the entire student body and faculty. The SAB originally worked through a single organization, the Student Entertainment Committee (SEC), headed by a former student. Rebel Brown, but became separated in the fall of 1974 when the Student Government Association (SCA) foresaw an increasing role in student activities. During the first year, movies were shown and dances, such as. the Beer Bash Boogie, were held. In 1975. the Office of Student Affairs was created with Joe Simon heading both SEC and the Intramurals department. A new constitution was adopted and the SEC took the new name. SAB. Within this change, the scope of activities was broadened to include not only entertainment, but also cultural and educational activities. Rather than a committee, the organization was broadened to include a board that consisted of student members overseeing the functions of various committee's. The SAB will soon be housed in the University Center providing a full range of student entertainment including Friday afternoon and night movies, dances, speakers, musical entertainment and special events, such as the Battle of Organization Stars. A 2 $ The Zeta Delta Chapter of Della Sigma Phi was chartered as the first national or international men's social fraternity at LSUS on lanuary 31. 1976. Since that time the nucleus of 25 men has constantly grown and a brotherhood we offered from the beginning is stronger than ever. The local chapter is pari of a relatively old but not ancient fraternity that was established in 1899 at the City College of New York. In addition. Delta Sigma Phi is not small by any means, as Zeta Delta was the 148th chapter and several more have been added yearly since. From the beginnings as a colony in 1974 to the present, the local chapter has strived to help others as they have sponsored service activities to raise money for charity and participated in those sponsored by others. Among the most current have been steady efforts for Muscular Dystrophy and Special Olympics. Like many fraternities though. Delta Sigma Phi enjoys a well rounded social life, but stresses the importance of academic excellence. Individuals like alumni Mike Norton have shown such excellence. Brother Norton was awarded a fellowship upon graduation to Arizona State University. Other Delta Sigs are educators and businessmen who are proving they arc also successful. That is why we say. “Think BIG. be a DELTA SIC. D E L T A S I G M A P H I 127 (Above) Connie Brabham. Because the university is engaged in the search for truth, of which God is the source, the Christian perspective is essential to the realization of the ultimate purpose of higher education. The unique nature of the university situation demands a specialized ministry by our denomination to the individuals in the campus community with their need for redemption and Christian nurture. Baptist Student Union was organized on the LSUS campus in 1967 to provide just such a ministry. Through campus worship. discussion. Bible study, social life, witness, and ministry, students are brought closer to Jesus Christ, who is the Source of all Truth. By combining spiritual growth with intellectual growth, the student comes to realize his place in the universe and his purpose in existing. When I look at thy heaven, thy work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast established: what is man that thou art mindful of him. and the Son of man that thou dost care for him Yet thou hast made him a little less than God. and dost crown him with glory and honor. The 1978 Bagatelle staffs intention was to upgrade the quality of the yearbook by presenting a well-rounded variety of campus activities. I believe we achieved our goal, but the success of the book lies among the many students who have combated the apathy that prevails within our academic community. By glancing through previous annuals, you can quickly see that most of the student life that exists at our university today, such as the Muscular Dystrophy Dance-a-thon, the restoration of the Caspiana Big House, the King Tut trip, Who’s Who, the LSUS Choir and some of the newly-founded clubs and organizations, were created during the past year. I would like to thank my staff, a group of some of the finest people I have ever met for not only their hard work, but for their moral support during the past two semesters. A special thanks goes to Chuck Meredith, Bagatelle advisor, and Dr. Mary McBride, dean of the college of Liberal Arts. Kay Owens P.S. With all the sleepless nights, all the liquor downed, hey, staff, it’s finally over!
