A descendant of Narcissus, Spectra has broadened its range to include the widest variety of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, foreign language works, photography, and art. Officially, its purpose is to provide an opportunity for students and faculty to publish original and creative works. In fulfilling this primary function, SfMclra also attempts to capture the spirit of the age in which we live and, in so doing, to clarify our vision of modern experience. As an incentive for students to submit works, Spectra 76 sponsored the First Annual Spectra Literary Competition, awarding cash prizes to first place winners in prose and poetry categories. ELECT MARK crmum nw« 75 INTRAMURAL SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES The intramural sports program at LSU-S is designed to offer opportunities for exercise, competition, and fellowship. The intramural program is in large measure planned and administered by students and is sustained by the interest and dedication of the students. Activities planned by the Intramural Department are designed to meet the needs of all LSU-S students, regardless of age, sex, or ability. Ability is not as important as desire to participate. Both individual and team competition is offered in the intramural program. The team effort expended is rewarded by opportunities to meet new friends as well as strengthen clubs, fraternities, sororities, and other organizations. Opportunities to develop individual leadership and skills are offered to students who desire to officiate various sports or become an Intramural Assistant T Opposite Page: Preston Freidly, David Towns, Sharon Raaberry, John Meier. The 1976 Bagatelle editor and staff have tried to make this year’s yearbook a contribution to the Bicentennial year. The Bicentennial theme was used, but only in relation to the students at LSU-S. What good is having a yearbook, if you can’t include the theme with the main purpose of the yearbook — you? There are some people who will say that the Bicentennial theme has been used too much already, but it only comes once in two-hundred years. This book has been put together by many concerned students and students who wish to see LSU-S continue to grow and to be a university for every student to be proud of. The staff hopes that this l ook will help bring you closer to our great school. We also ho| e that this book will help remind you of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful country. Turn back to the opening section of this book and l e thankful for all the freedoms that we as Americans do j osscss. Dr. Milton Finley — Advisor. 79 The Almagest, the official newspaper of the student Ixxly of Louisiana State University in Shreveport provides information for students, faculty-staff, and tne University community. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION As delineated in the Student Handbook, “The Student Government Association is an elective governing Ixxly which represents all students attending LSU-S.” Composed of 28 Senators from the 5 colleges and a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and 2 Executive Secretaries, the 1975-76 SGA has concentrated its efforts toward improving and enhancing student life at LSU-S by implementing a Book Referral Exchange Program, providing interior decor for the temporary Union Building, participating in contractual efforts to provide improved food service. The SGA has also devoted much time and energy to overhauling its own organization by promoting needed Constitutional revision; u|xlatingand streamliningits Administrative and Executive arms in order to operate more efficiently, effectively, and economically. The SGA sponsored public service projects such as the “Know Your Candidate Forum.” Other community projects were the participation of LSU-S in the La. State Fair. A new undertaking by the SGA was the decorating and lighting of an outdoor Christmas tree in the Mall. In celebrating the Bicentennial year, the SGA, in the name of the student Ixxly, has purchased and donated to the University a handsome set of Ceremonial flags. The first major undertaking of the SGA in consent with the Administration, has been to lay the financial groundwork for the procurement of a student rechcck for use by all student activities at LSU-S. 1st Row: S. Delta Delta Delta was founded Thanksgiving Eve, 1888, by Sarah Ida Shaw, who realized that a fraternity could meet a great need among college women. These needs, as seen by Tri-Delta, include a broadening of a collegiate’s life through various activities including social, moral, spiritual, and intellectual aspects. Yet Tri-Delta’s guidance does not end with college graduation. Through an excellent alumnae program Tri-Delta exerts a continuing influence upon its members. Delta Delta Delta, realizing that in order to gain true benefits of fraternity membership, one must give of herself, actively sponsors two philanthropies. The first is scholarship offered on both a national and local level. The second philanthropy is cancer research for children, which is celebrated nationally by what is known as Sleigh Bell Day. Tri-Delta offers to its members a beginning rich with tradition and a heritage of truth and friendship. Each member is challenged to be her unique self, while contributing to that heritage with loyalty, excellence, and love. 85 86 Dressed appropriately, Zeta Sorority was one of the bicentennial contest winners. Zeta Tau Alpha was founded on October 15,1898, at Longwood College in the state of Virginia as a National Woman’s Fraternity. Throughout the years it has grown to be one of the largest fraternities in existence, with chapters in both the United States and Canada. The insignia and creed symbolize the purpose of the fraternity. They are a heritage from the past, significant because of what Zeta Tau Alpha has believed and has become. Its dedication is to learn and experience those things which will brighten college years and lives through a combination of friendship, fun, and community service. Zeta Tau Alpha has achieved its goal through a program of well-rounded activities embraced by all members, a program which somehow combines friendship, fun, and service to others. ZETA TAU ALPHA 87 Alpha Phi, the first international sorority to come to LSU-S, offers to college women a platform for growth during the years and on throughout life. To Alpha Phi’s everywhere are the open gates of entertainment, helpfulness, achievement, and friendship. Founded on Sept 30,1872, at Syracuse, New York, Alpha Phi has reached a membership span of 70,000. Cardiac aid is Alpha Phi’s national philanthropy of which two million dollars has been raised for the cause. Alpha Phi has established a permanent fund for cardiac aid at the LSU Medical School. The 1975-76 year started with a week full of rush parties and the pledgingof 11 girls. In October, the Phi’s were No. 1 in the Powderpuff Football Tournament and were active in volleyball intramurals. On January 10,1976, eight more girls were initiated into the fraternity. The past year has been a busy one for us in intramural sports and the community. We won the fraternity football championship by a score of 14 to 0 and are very proud of the title. Our goals for this year are to become K A actives and become chartered. We also seek to live up to the ideals of KA by living as gentlemen — but still being able to do a little rebel rousing.” We also nope to soon be able to purchase a house where we can display the traditional cannon, representing our defense of the South. This past year we have been active with the March of Dimes as we worked a mobile coke booth during their ’75 Walkathon. Academically, we rank high on the honor roll and you can see how high each semester. Last, but not least, to stress our brotherhood, we have had several pledge meetings to work out our problems and strive to grow as a chapter. DOM Delta Omicron Mu, Affectionately called the “Dirty Ole Men,” was organized in 1969 on the LSU-S campus as a civic, academic, and social readjustment program for the returning veteran. So successful were the efforts of D.O.M., Louisiana Tech established a charter in 1970 and LSU-Baton Rouge in 1974. Through Dynamic Leadership and hard work on part of all its membership, D.O.M. is continuing to be the campus leader in activities. Perennially, D.O.M. collects toys for the “Toys for Tots” campaign and books for bedridden Vets of the V.A. Hospital. During the spring semester of 1976, D.O.M. spearheaded, along with other groups, LSU-S’s first formal. But the “Firsts” don’t stop there. Recognizing the need for sexual Equality, D.O.M. has expanded its prerequites to accept women. Only one question is left to be resolved. Sigma Alpha Upsilon is gaining a reputation as the helping hands of LSU-S, and the “Let’s Play Like” children’s plays because of the two divisions of the organization. The Helper’s Division is volunteer service done by its members. The Players Division is the other division of SAU and it has gained a reputation that is even more widespread than that of the Helper’s Division. With SAU’s total enrollment of approximately fifty members and pledges, we, as members, hope to continue our aim — that of giving of ourselves through service. The club was formed in 1967 and has since become one of LSU-S’s most active organizations. Its goals are to promote widespread understanding of scientific truth to broaden the scope of classroom education, to assist in the collection of specimens for the Life Sciences Museum, and to preserve the environment. The Biolog}r Club is funded by membership dues and solicitation of donations from area businesses and civic groups. The money is used to fund trips and purchase required equipment. 100 The purpose of the LSU-S Agriculture Club is to promote more interest and participation in the varied aspects of modern agriculture and to fulfill the interest of students interested in the different areas of agriculture. The first activities of the club included field trips to area farms, ranches, riding clubs, and the Red River Experimental Station. These trips are designed to teach the members new techniques in raising and selecting plants and animals, as well as understanding the jobs of people in the agriculture field. The club was established to better the relations between student and faculty members, and to allow club members to develop leadership abilities. During the course of the school year, the club sponsors lectures on topics of mathematical interest, tutoring services for math students, the weekly BRAINTEASER contest, and provides information on graduate work in mathematics to interested individuals. The club frequently functions as a social group, with tours of various computer complexes, parties, dinners, and assorted gatherings. Though basically small, the Math Club has always been a close-knit group. The administration of the SAB is carried out by the students themselves. This organization strives to maintain the total union concept, always keeping in mind that the emphasis is always to be on a complete, well-rounded program that emphasizes quality rather than quantity. Out-of-class education will l e promoted while serving the commuter student. The SAB programs for both the majority and minority groups on campus, always keeping the development of the individual student foremost. ALPHA SIGMA OMICRON Alplja g tgma ©rnirron LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN SHREVEPORT Spring, 1975 Initiation Presenting the 1975 Spring Initiates April 17,1975 Alpha Sigma Omicron, the LSUS honor society, is dedicated to maintaining high ideals of leadership and scholarship in our university. It encourages these qualities by awarding honorary membership to those students who demonstrate excellence in their individual fields of study. Students nominated for these awards are required to have at least thirty semester hours of credit and maintain a 3.5 overall grade | oint average. An initiation ceremony in honor of the new members is held each spring semester. Last year, for the first time, the ceremony was held at Morrison’s Cafeteria, thus marking the beginning of a new tradition — the annual initiation banquet. In the spirit of academic encouragement. Alpha Sigma Omicron has been consciously evolving into a service-oriented organization. The university administration has responded eagerly to the honor society’s desire to serve and has extended to it the privilege of participating in the Honors Day Convocation and ushering at the LSUS graduation ceremonies. Alpha Sigma Omicron is reaching out to the students of LSU-S by offering free tutoring in any subject on a weekly basis and through donations to the library. These gifts include $250 for the purchase of microfilms on which back issues of newspapers are permanently preserved, and $100 for the purchase of books. Josaph Abramson John H. Austin, Jr. Linda S. Therefore, the Psychology Club must serve many functions. It informs the members of the current developments. This is accomplished through field trips to mental health institutions and through professionals giving guest talks, such as Dr. Barbara Zimmerman who spoke on “Language Development” and Dr. Mark Vigen on “Organic Brain Dysfunction.” The club provides an environment that encourages students to share their thoughts and ideas concerning the various aspects of psychology. no Back Row: Clare Marlowe — Treasurer; Dr. Donita Goth an! — Sponsor, Margret Piazza — Asst. Opposite Page: Top Left: Guy Ben Murphrey plays and sings at a recent BSU activity. Its philosophy is simple and straightforward. Students attending a university are searching for truth. Because God is the source of truth, a Christian, as well as an academic perspective, is necessary to realize the ultimate purpose of higher education. This is the philosophy of Baptist Student Union, the first organization established at LSU-S, and a group which is steadily growing in attendance and participation. BSU offers three services in one: Acting as a fellowship of students, providing a program for students, and finally, having students become actively involved in both club and community activities. The latter goal has become a distinct reality, as students attending BSU have aided in such diverse projects as serving water at the Louisiana State Fair and assisting in the Sunday morning worship service at Confederate Memorial Center. Additionally, students may serve as summer missionaries, traveling to different parts of the nation, or even the world, working within communities to help spread the message of Christ. Locally, BSU provides lunch and fellowship for university students every Wednesday. Bible studies, parties, retreats, conventions, and a spring banquet help round out the organization’s offerings. It certainly will not make a difference in the way you live your life, but it might help you find something you never noticed or forgot. I f your picture is out of focus, or your name is spelled wrong, I am extremely sorry. Many times we were uncertain, but I am sure of one thing: all the lost sleep, the many hours, and the endless anxieties will have all been worth it, if you can become a part of this book. Dr. Milton Finley; our Taylor representative, Chuck Fowler; our Bagatelle staff, Jeff McKinnon, Rodney Watson, Ken Jones, Philip Burns, Mark Elfervig, Becky Hubbard, Monique Kolonko, and Natalie Williams; AJmagesrfall editor, Randy Griffith; Almagest spring editor, Garrett Stearns; and the Almagest photographers for all their help and the many long hours.
