They sponsored free “Friday Night at the Movies.’ two dances, a field day. and a “Beard Growing Contest. Three campus wide discussions were held on various topics pertinent to the students. Membership consists of one representative for each active, chartered organization who is elected at the beginning of each semester by the organization which he represents. Robert Banning. 76 BSU The Baptist Student Union is the only religious organization on campus. The objective of BSU is two-fold. First, the inward journey designed to meet personal needs for worship, study, and fellowship in an effort to answer the question, Who am I?.” Second, the outward journey of service and ministry to God and man. BSU meets every Wednesday in which a luncheon is held and various speakers arc invited. Membership is determined by participation. There arc no formal membership rules. BSU strives to make students aware of the education process through a Christian perspective. The officers this year were Phyllis Kline. President; Lee Stcglich, Outreach Chairman; Jim Williamson, Study Chairman; Pat Powell, Missions Chairman; and Bill Gordon, State Council Representative. The sponsor is Mrs. Patricia Bates. 77 Beta Chi The Business Club strives to develop contact and communication with the local business community, increase opportunities for student identification with business, and to create an awareness of the professional opportunities available in the business areas. The club held two picnics with OM at Lake Bistineau. One of their big social events was a Shrimp and Beer Party which was held during the spring semester. Activities for the club include discussions of getting a legal education and the observation of courtroom procedure. Members obtain speakers from the law profession to aid their understanding of law. The New Environment Club’s purpose is to promote an aesthetic environment, increase awareness of the arts, and to give experience in group action for improving the environment. The club’s scope includes the campus and community as a whole. 81 SAU Sigma Alpha Upsilon is a merit fraternity which includes students in the area of speech pathology, education, psychology, and sociology. The organization is divided into two main divisions, the Helpers and the Players. The Helpers division includes students who help in various schools and in the LSU-S Communication Center. The Players division includes students who act out a “Let’s Play Like series written by Mrs. Joan Harrington. the advisor for the club. The Order of the Apple is bestowed upon a member with over 300 hours of service. The Order of the Thespians Thespians includes outstanding members of the Players division. This year the club began broadening its scope by offering volunteer observation of emotionally disturbed patients in settings such as psycodrama and psychiatric symposiums under the supervision of Dr. Gremillion at the V.A. Hospital and Dr. Carl Shannon at Confederate Memorial Hospital. The purpose of the club is to promote physical education for those interested as well as for P.E. majors. The club held their first activity of the year at Sun City Elementary in Bossier City. Mr. Dino and some club members gave a demonstration on movement education, a bilingual teaching technique. The club members also attended the La. The club collects specimens for use in the biology department, giving its members experience in field work, take numerous educational camping trips and other activities. The club’s main purpose is to further the members’ understanding in these areas. On various occasions, speakers were brought to club meetings. This year’s officers included Valla Barber. Sandy Bellar. 88 LOUISIANA STATE Circle K The Circle K Club is a service organization. Its main purpose is the performance of service projects in school and in town. Working at the Confederate Charity Hospital is a main project of the club. The members talk to the patients there and try to help the out of town patients as much as possible. On Thursdays they take charge of the Volunteer Office of the Hospital and do the work that is necessary. Other projects include selling tickets for the Poor Man’s Supper and helping at the supper. At present the organization has 46 members. This is the student branch of the Louisiana Teachers’ Association. Dr. Virginia Eddleman serves as faculty advisor. 93 Health Sciences Club One of the major goals of the Health Sciences Club is to promote an interest in the medical sciences, and to engage its members in off campus activities involving the medical field. The members observe surgery, attend lectures and other related medical duties. A person desiring membership in the Health Sciences Club must have at least a 2.0 average and an earnest interest in the medical profession. The officers for the year are Randal L. Coon. They stress educational and social growth of their members. Membership is open to all students of LSUS. A prospective member must be enrolled in one or more agriculture courses. As an annual project, the club members make and sell a student directory. The club also sponsored a trophy for the Caddo Parish Livestock Show. Its purpose is to prepare the women in the sorority to handle responsibility and teach them how to cope with different problems. The club was formed to stimulate and develop dramatic skills and techniques in its members. The production of dramas, comedies and children's theatre will be one of its most important functions.
