LSU SHREVEPORT 1970 BAGATELLE 1970 LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN SHREVEPORT VOLUME III TABLE OF COSTENTS Louisiana State University at Shreveport is many things: a two-year branch of one of the nation's greatest universities, a complex of handsome new facilities where novice and scholar exchange ideas and hath profit from the interaction, a place for learning and friendship, contemplation and understanding, discipline and growth. It is to the men and women on this campus who are actively involved in the process of education, that the 1970 Bagatelle is respectfully and appreciatively dedicated. As the newest campus in the LSU System, LSU-Shreveport has made an auspicious start toward developing into a great University Campus. The University Administration intends to promote the growth of LSU-Shreveport during the 1970's with all the resources at its command. In this book you will see pictures of a very fine faculty and staff and an outstanding student body. During our short history, we have enjoyed working with many very capable student leaders who have helped to establish a number of clubs and activities. These represent the beginnings of an LSU-Shreveport tradition. As we secure more facilities on the campus, more activities may bo developed. These will help to provide students with leadership training and non-academic experience necessary for a fully developed personality. At the time this yearbook is released, many of our students will bo making plans to move on to other colleges or to employment. Bivins, III—Director The Board of Supervisors is the administrative body of Louisiana State University. Each of the 14 members is appointed by the Governor for 14 year terms. The Board is the University's representative in the Louisiana Legislature. LSU is in its hundredth year, and tho Board has sot up other campuses throughout the state: New Orleans. Eunice. Alexandria, and Shreveport. Tho Board is com- posed of LSU graduates, and it is their duty to formulate the policies of the University which are executed by the Administration. The responsibility of supervising the education of LSU's students is fulfilled by the Board and the Adnvnistration. M2 4 113 115 1969-1970: The Year of Dubious Achievement SEPTEMBER OCTOBER Registration was held September 15-17 with 1435 students onrolled. Each person went throuah the procedure of filling out a packet and stopping at tables to pay fees and get class cards. The game of registration took only about an hour and a half: everyone went past go and paid $90. After writing that nine diqit number known as a social security number twenty times, it finally became meaninaful. And once again the halls were filled with students. Each student had to purchase toxts from the bookstore to aid him in his studies. Various clubs reorganized and elected officers aftor the summer vacation. Circle K sponsored a streot dance on the LSUS parking lot. The function was open to all LSUS students and their dates. The heavy music was provided by the Rockin' Red Eyes. Also beginning during the month were various football teams— both male and female. The sophomore girls and the freshman girls organized for the Powder Puff game. The boys chose up sides for the intramural games. “FIFTH Your Sophomore Ticket KEVINJBEL mikeTair namvMr DORCAS HASTY mmui KAY OLIN munn CHRIS ADAMS ttmsommn Turn On with The Fifth October was ablaze with the Student Government Association election campaigns. There were two sophomore tickets: Fire headed by Georgia Scheen and the Fifth headed by Kevin Abol. Only one freshman ticket was presented with an independent running for treasurer. The Fire ticket sponsored a bonfire and poster party to promote their ticket's name. The library building was plastored with posters of every description. The month of October was markod with the first national moratorium. Many LSU-S students and some faculty members wore black arm-bands. Later that day white bands appeared. At Freo Speech Alley that day a largo crowd qathered to hear both sides of the issue presented. Halloween came and Gamma held a party. Thoso who wero present were in such a state as to enjoy the band and wood burning fireplace. Maps were made directing guests to tho location. All through the month the Puffing Powder Girls practiced pigskin punting. 117 NOVEMBER DECEMBER The Powdor Puff game bo-twcon tho freshmen and the sophomores was held at the Woodlawn practice field. The freshmen stomped the sophomores 32-0. The SGA election was held with only 218 out of 1435 people voting. The Fire ticket and (naturally) the un-contested freshman ticket won. An inaugural ball featuring Irma Thomas was held at the 40 and 8 club for the incoming SGA officers. Circle K sponsored a cross-country car rally. J. P. Strain came in first with Lee Payne second. The Biology Club took a field trip to Kisatchie National Forest to obtain specimens for the lab. School was out for the Thanksgiving holidays on November 26. Classwork resumed Decomber I after the Thanksgiving vacation. The Bag-atollo beauty elections were held Doccmbor 15. Tho student body in an again apathetic voting count elected 6 out of 33 nominees. The two top positions went to Eorlyne Lehn-ertz os Miss LSU-S and Kay Olin as Miss Bagatello. Intramural football gomes were held this month. Out of all the teams competing, the Juniors came out on top beating the IPT's in tho final game. Phi Sigma Chi, the first social fraternity at LSU-S. was formed. The fraternity was sponsored by Jim Miller, a sociol studies instructor. SGA sponsored a computer dating service for a quartor. Tho annual Gamma Christmas ceremony was held on Decomber 16. The festivities wore complete with music and that jolly old soul. Santa, alias Bill Wisby. The faculty had a Christmas party the last day before Christmas vacation. The Bagatelle staff had a party in the office also. Classes ended at noon on December 20 for the holidays. JANUARY Classwork resumed January 5 after the Christmas holidays. Throughout January Circle K distributed 1969 yearbooks to various businesses and community leaders in order to promote LSU-S. A student committee in conjunction with the administration formed a new dress regulation policy—anything goes. Anything that is unless some instructor feels your clothing is objectionable. Slacks became abundant across the campus. Delta Omicron Mu. a veteran's social fraternity, was formed in January. Each member must be a veteran or be on active duty. The grueling ritual of final exams was again repeated for the Fall semester. A shortonod semester break gave students an opportunity to relax after exams. Everyone hoped the postman would be deterred by either rain, sloet, or gloom of night. Registration was again held on the 28th through 30th during which everyone Mickey Moused his way through forms and occasionally ill-advised advisors. Total enrollment for the Spring semester was 1252. LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSI FINAL GRA I 26 27 OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR 119 FEBRUARY MARCH Ground Hog Day came and went. Whoopee! The Spring Semester officially began on February 5. After only a week of school wo were out again for a four day Mardi Gras weekend. With New Orleans 385 miles away, most LSUS students celebrated at home. Then back to school Just in time to celebrate Valentine's Day. Everyone purposely overlooked Friday the Thirteenth. Throughout the month various organizations were not (for the most part) idle. The SGA began to visit local civic clubs to promoto LSUS. Intramural basketball teams were formed and practice at local courts was begun. On February 15 ten women were initiated into Gamma Sigma Omega in a ceremony at Kay Olin's home and new catalogue regulations concerning attendance went into effect. Spring Semester meant no Saturday classes. The New Almagest staff (actually still the old staff plus Steve—Sandy) was announced. Student government elections were held to elect a new president for the Freshman class. Marvin Ruben-stoin won tho presidency of the class and Rod Owen won the vice presidency. By tho way. if anyone cares. February 21 was a full moon. Tho intramural basketball games continued on tne hard court. Everyone began looking forward to tho Easter vacation at the end of the month. St. Patrick's Day. March 17. was celebrated by each student's wearing of the green, except for one poor fool who forgot and was pinched black and blue. Midsemester exams beqan and the entire student body panicked. Stu-donts were kgown to burn three quarts of QP grade A midnight oil. Gamma sponsored the Easter festivities at the Shriners' Hospital. Speakers continued their crusade to promote LSU-S to the Shreveport - Bossier area. f 120 APRIL On April 3 the Coke machines exploded sending four card players to the hospital choking on orange and grape. Also injured in the melee was Mrs. Bess Corbett who was being presented her award os instructor of the year. Mrs. Corbett was struck in the Id by a flying psych book. On April 8 eighteen agricultural apprentices wore struck by apoplexy. Later that day the student body revolted when the milk machine gave sour milk. Everyone agreed it was an udder failure. On April 20 Mr. Malcolm Parker reported that someone stole the coloring book, and the library would be closed the following week. April 23 was proclaimed Moriece Gleason Day by Queen Elizabeth II. and the student body reciprocated by coming to class dressed like Milton. Following the event the Dean cancelled daises for the rest of the month ... April Fool! MAY LSU-S students celebrated May Day with the Druids by joyfully sniffing flowers (among other things). As spring fever engulfed the campus. clothing became progressively more casual and more brief. An epidemic of sandals and cutoffs struck the school. The big event of the month was the distribution of Bagatelle. May of course, meant the end of school and that slaving ritual finals (again). Everyone sweated finals especially since the air-conditioner went out in the shack and hundreds of nicotine crazed poker players gagged on the fresh air. Many people were looking forward to their summer jobs. The book will be complete and in the hands of tho publisher. It has been a long year, and the publication of this book has been a great deal of trouble, yet it has been worthwhile. As editor of tho Bagatelle. I have traveled over a thousand miles, mot many people connected with yearbooking, and looked through hundreds of other college yearbooks. The 1970 Bagatelle is a combination of all those other books, drawing extensively from the yearbooks of Texas Tech, the University of Houston, and Yale. Our goal this year was to create a more complete picture of the year. This has been done. The staff worked untiringly and with a great deal of originality to put all the activities of both semesters into this form. They have the satisfaction of knowing that the job was well done. There is little othor compensation for serving on the Bagatelle staff. It is difficult work. I should also like to thank all non-staff individuals who helped with the book this year, whether by typing and office work or simply by showing up to have their pictures made. A special thanks to Beverly Taylor and Sally Tooke for their collaboration in the writing of tho poem in the opening section. Lastly I should like to thank Mrs. Nancy Sexton for allowing me to edit the book with no previous experience and for allowing the staff to operate independently: free to create the kind of book we felt would be representative of the year.
