 ... a Man and his School” We, the staff of the 1968 Bagatelle, dedicate this first volume to Dean Donald E. Shipp. No one individual has contributed more to LSU-S than he has. His ability to take a school in its barest concept and turn if info a working, well-organized University has earned him our deepest admiration. Dean Shipp, a native Louisianian, received his B.S. degree from Northw tern State College and then earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He served as Principal of Waller Elementary School in Bossier City before returning to the main campus as a faculty member. Before accepting the position of Dean of LSU-S, he served as Assistant Dean of LSU in Baton Rouge. 3

Under the administration of Governor John McKeithen, LSU-S became a part of the Louisiana State University system. In 1964, the Louisiana Legislature authorized this two-year branch of the University. Immediately began the studies and plans, proposals and decisions which preceded the opening of the first session on .September 21, 1967—thereby extending the advantages of a great university to the residents of northwest Louisiana.
