This year L.S.U. was treated to a fan- tastic line-up ot speakers on a wide variety of pertinent and informative topics. The first presentation was a panel discussion on The Sources of the Crises in Latin America. It was held on September 21. Panelists included former Ambassador Robert White, a representative for the U.S. in Latin America for 25 years. Allen Weinstein, editor of the Washington Quarterly and historian of U.S. diplomacy and information policy, was also on the panel. A university professor. Dr. Emma Brossard, who is Director of Center for Energy Studies and a native of Latin America was also on the panel. The panel was moderated by Karen Elliot House, currently the diplomatic correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and an award winner for ex- cellent foreign policy coverage. Next in the series was Dr. William Masters, author of many leading books on human sexuality and co-founder of the Master ' s and Johnson Institute. His topic was Sex as Communication . The Federal government was the topic of the next Perspective speaker. Senator William Proxmire. He is the famed bestower of the Golden Fleece award, an award given to the biggest or most ironic or most ridiculous example of government waste. The title of his presentation was Uncle Sam; The Last of the Big Time Spenders. Bella Abzug, former congress-woman from New York and one of the nation ' s leading women civil activists, spoke on January 25. Ms. Abzug ' s message was one of social justice and help of oppressed groups, including the poor and women. She discussed the bankruptcy of the nation and in- justice to the oppressed caused by Reagan policies. The last of our speakers was James Kilpatrick. a conservative political columnist, the most widely syndicated columnist in America. . . Choral Society LSU Symphony TIGER TOWN The tigertown area can best be described as a city within a city. There, the LSU student can satisfy almost every imaginable need. Food, which is near and dear to every student ' s heart, can be found in great abundance in Tigertown. Certainly, no one will ever starve to death anywhere near the gates of the University. There are about twenty restaurants all within three blocks of the campus. Students have a wide selection ranging from such traditionals as pizza and hamburgers to the more unusual culinary delights of stuffed potatoes served as a main course. The German, Mexican, and Oriental dishes offered are sure to satisfy even the most adventurous of tastebuds. Entertainment is high on the students ' list of priorities and that, too, can be found in Tigertown. The video game craze has regenerated interest in and given birth to a number of game rooms. Pool sharks can have a field day at the Bayou, an off-campus bar that houses eight tables. Movie -goers can see the latest releases at the University Cinema or step back in time by viewing old classics at the Varsity, where the nostalgic atmosphere blends in beautifully with the movies shown there. Music lovers have three record stores to browse through, two of which sell stereo equipment. But back to Academia: the pretense which we are all here under. Those much-needed textbooks can be obtained from three bookstores and notes can be photocopied at the local print shop. Once books have been purchased, something to transport them in is needed. This is where the store that specializes in backpacks comes in. Hikers can find their equipment here and hobbyists such as dancers and sports buffs also have shops that cater to their needs. Those dreary and dull domestic chores can all be taken care of in Tigertown which offers such establishments as a supermarket, drug stores, cleaner and laundromat, gas stations, and hair designers. Self-indulgence can be satisfied at the jewelry stores, gift shops, and the latest fashions can always be found in the many clothing stores. Nightlife; this was created by and tor the many students who aren ' t fully conscious until noon and don ' t ever shift into high gear until the sun sets, the turntables start spinning, and the beer begms to tlow. The bar hoppers can hop from Murphy ' s, the Bayou, or venture down Highland Road to the Big Four. (The Cotton Club, Shanahan ' s, Kilpatricks, and the Bengal.) Those beer guzzlers dissatisfied with the different atmospheres these bars have to offer can buy their kegs at the Beer Factory and create their own atmosphere. However, the most essential service Tigertown has to offer is that ot banking, to pay for all of the others. By; Lmda Sussman m4I m Chimes Street ' i i. Cajun food, dance, and music were the order of the day as local Louisianians and lots of LSU students joined in the fun. First place in the overall sweepstakes event went to Lambda Chi and Delta Gamma, coming in second were Acacia and Pi Phi. On May 18, 1982, a total of 2,028 deliriously happy students graduated from LSU. Broken down, 1,575 undergraduate, 67 graduate education, 60 social welfare, 76 veterinary medicine, and 247 graduate school new alumni received their sheepskins. Marathon This year ' s Marathon included a parade, pole sitting contest, partying, and a new event, Air Band Competition. Winners of the air band competition were Mr. Clean and the Jamin ' Janitors (Sigma Nu), first; World, Breeze, Flame, and the Moods (Delta Kappa Epsilon), second; and the Cosmetics (Alpha Gamma Delta), third. During its 11 years here, the Marathon, which was originated by Delta Tau Delta, has raised over $200,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All pho(os by Koon Leigh i Oktoberfest A touch of Germany hit the LSU Union in the form of the second annual Oktoberfest. Some of the activities during the week-long event were wine and cheese parties, feasts, dances, a human chess game, and a flea market. The Homecoming Queen was Elizabeth Bearden and her court was Lillie Triche, Tonette Krousel, Sheila Howarth, and Shawn Lucius. The week climaxed with a Tiger victory over South Carolina. 1 ir ICT y - m l y II Carlotta St. The Carlotta Street Party and the Beaux Arts Ball, two annual Halloween celebrations, were once again huge successes as hundreds of LSU students came out in their best costumes. ■-- ' ? 159 Beaux Arts Ball Student Rodeo Each year students get a chance to become cowboys and bronc busters during the Block and Bridle All Student Rodeo. The Las Vegas- bound plane was barely off the ground when it is believed that windshears caused it to come down in a suburban area. All aboard the plane and 8 people on the ground were killed, totaling 153 deaths. The low number of deaths on the ground was attributed to the fact that the crash occurred during a work day when most people were away from home. fIS ' J .r : ' - ■ :■ r-V-- ■: Brodhead From a small town in Pennsylvania, Bob Brodhead went to college at Duke University where he played football, once here against LSU. With a background in athletics and a degree in business, he went to work for 11 years in the NFL. 1 year in the WFL, and was Field Director for the Miami Dolphms before accepting the position of Athletic Director at LSU. Bob Brodhead feels the fans at LSU are unique and should be treated like adults, thus he put a halt to searches that had been conducted previously at LSU football games. In the spirit of a true businessman, he even suggested the sale of beer at stadium events. His most important goal, Brodhead feels, is to make every coach feel an integral part of the system. Unlike the previous AD, Brodhead supports all LSU sports, no matter how large or small. Dredging Because some parts ot the I ' nivcrsity Lakes had become shallow and stagnant, a dredging project was undertaken last year. Draining of the lakes confused ducks and turtles and left many of them on the sides of the road as they had tried to cross to new water. Hopetully, the dredging will leave the lakes more habitable and attractive. liavfd Zrct7 ■:«= s ' J ' ' Vrf ' ' ■■r m. I LSU is a growing university, evidenced everywhere in the form of campus construction. Under construction was the third floor of the library, the new Design building, and the reconstruction of fire damaged Peabody Hall. Construction Quality Thrust Chancellor Wharton ' s Quality Thrust proposal which was intended to get L.S.U. a top 30 ranking, was severely tested by a state budget cut of 4.4 percent. The future of Quality Thrust looked bleak as many departments had their program budgets reduced. On a brighter note however, the University welcomed the addition of Dr. Peter Chen to the Computer Science department, along with many other new faculty members. l Smack-Off In an attc-mpt to ciucr the Ciuiiicss Hook ot Rti orJs .iiul to raise turuK for The Phone, the Scotch Ciu.irJ lickl tin. The book was well received after its presentation to the anxious student population. I Orange Bowl Coach Jerry Stovall led his Fighting Tigers and their delirious fans to an 8-2-1 season. A win over Florida State clinched a bid to the Orange Bowl in Miami. Although the Tigers lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Orange Bowl was a fitting way to cap off a victorious season. Bringing further honor to L.S.U., Stovall was named Coach of the Year. n Bear Bryant Although Tiger fans were overjoyed with the L.S.U. victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide, they joined college football fans all across the nation in mourning the sudden death of Bear Bryant. Bryant, the winningest coach in college football, suffered a heart attack just weeks after retiring as coach of the Crimson Tide. I i y Free Speech Alley - I gl — Free Speech Alley, L.S.U. ' s forum of open expression, continued this year without fail. The Alley ' s regular speakers once agai provided humorous and insightful thoughts on everything from university life to political aggression. And of course. Sister Cindy, Brother Jed, and their faithful followers dominated the bench. The Alley itself was the scene of controversy when moderator Stuart Smith and SGA representative Bob Coleman had it out early in the spring semester. (.0 LABOR- ' FIRST W Governor Davt Ireen and former Governor Edwin Edwards were gearing up early in 1983 for the upcoming gubernatorial election. Words flew and temp ers were tried as the two began their campaigns for what promises to be an interesting race. 1 The Upcoming Election Parking Students arrived in the fall to once again find changes in the University parking regulations. Parking continued to be hell on earth (surpassing even registration) as the administration tried yet another plan to ease the crunch. Notable changes included the addition of gates to the faculty lots, new windshield stickers, and the requirement that commuters choose a parking lot for the semester. i V ' Tg H Parking Solutions I..S .r. students found rather remarkable ways to circumvent parking in illegal lots or in overcrowded areas. Sue Z. Que parked her car in the L ' niversity lake — after dredging of course. No one else, we think, has thought of this very obvious place, and we congratulate Sue on her imagination! Our bright students from Bunkie however, came up with the Gumbo staffs favorite way to beat the parking problem. These brilliant individuals float from their hometown daily, land on the uncrowded parade grounds, then float home after classes. These students win our Golden Parking Space Award for Parking Problem Solving. VC ' e here at the Gumbo hope that these examples in ingenuity inspire all students to come up with new ideas to solve the parking problem on campus. Darryl Lawrence r$i .. vfj KS ia ■ - Tiger Takes Life On the darker side of issues this year, Mike the Tiger, favored mascot of the University, committed suicide. After several years of serving the University, surviving electrical shocks and cheerleaders standing on his cage, Mike got fed up and took his own life. Mike, in a note to his 25,000 fans, stated that he was unable to withstand the humiliation of losing to Tulane twice in a row. We are all saddened by his demise, and we hope that he made it to that Great Tiger Cage m the Sky. As if that weren ' t enough, Garry James, another freshman runner, added another 128 yards on only 12 carries to assure the Tigers ' victory. H 1 i ! I DB ? :; Tiger quarterback Alan Risher, otherwise known as The Slidell Slinger passed for three touchdowns against the Rice Owls in a 52-13 massacre of the Houston rivals. Two of his strikes were to Milliard, who was beginning to prove he was for real. Risher sat out the entire fourth quarter, handing the offensive controls over to Timmy Byrd and ]eff Wickersham. who each tossed a touchdown in the Tigers ' second win of the season. Many said that Florida would be the first real test for the high-flying Tigers, and many feared that LSU would fall apart at the seams against the fourth-ranked Gators. But Milliard didn ' t listen to the experts , as he scored three touchdowns, one by land and two by air, in a 24-13 SEC victory. The Bengals were rewarded for their performance with the 18th spot on the Associated Press Top 20 team list. A 52-yard fourth quarter field goal by the Tennessee Volunteers let some air out of the Tigers ' balloon as LSU ' s undefeated record received its first blemish with a 24-24 tie in Tiger Stadium. The Vols ' Fuad Reveiz kicked three field goals in the game from 38, 38 and 52 yards to deadlock the Tigers, who, in spite of the tie, moved up two notches to 16th in the AP poll. mamaam • r V 1, • 1 LSU recorded its 500th victory in its football history by whipping the Kentucky Wildcats, 34-10 for the Tigers ' second SEC win. The bandit defense, well on its way to becoming the premiere defense in the SEC, allowed Kentucky only 83 yards total offense in the first half, and minus one yard in the second half The scoring for the Tigers ' fourth win of the season was evenly distributed as Eric Martin, Herman Fontenot and Earl Curtis each caught touchdown passes from quarterbacks Risher and Byrd. A record crowd of 78.944 saw the purple-]erseyed Tigers play a tough game against the South Carolina Gamecocks, but the Bandits rose to the occasion, allowing only six points as the 5-0-1 Tigers moved to 13th in the AP poll. Linebacker Albert Richardson who tied an LSU record with 21 tackles, was named the AP Southeastern Lineman of the Week. The scoreboard in Tiger Stadium showed a Pac-Man gobbling up the words Ole Miss , and that ' s exactly what the Tigers did to the Oxford invaders, to the tune of 45-8. Hilliard and James combined for five touchdowns and 197 yards while the Bandit defense held the Rebels to only 82 total yards. Along with the SEC win came more national recogni- tion as the Tigers moved up to the 11th spot on the AP poll. i Out of the Alabama j;ame came such quotes as, That was the best beating we ' ve had since the ■60 ' s, and That ' s one ol the best defenses I ' ve played against Hut. surprise of surprises, the quotes were commg trom the Alabama corner, as LSU totally frustrated Paul Bear Bryant and his Crimson Tide, 20-10. The tamed Alabama squad failed to make the first touchdown in the entire first half of play as the Ban- dits repeatedly pounded on quarterback Walter Lewis, who could lead Alabama to only 45 net yards the fewest ever gained bv Alabama ' s wishbone offense. Thousands ot Tiger fans poured to the Baton Rouge airport to welcome the heroes back from Birmingham as Tigermania spread throughout the Bayou. The Tigers vaulted to sixth on the AP poll and the entire defensive front, Rydell Melancon, Leornard Marshall, Lawrence Williams, Ramsey Dardar. Albert Richard- son, Bill Elko and Tim Joiner were named national Defensive Linemen of the Week. A disappointed Mississippi State team took out its frustrations on LSU in StarkviUe, Mississippi as the Bulldogs handed the Tigers their first defeat of the season, a 27-24 heartbreaker. Although Alan Risher completed 25 of 34 passes for a record 308 yards, the Bandits couldn ' t contain MSU quarterback John Bond, who led the Bulldogs 10 fourth quarter points, including a 45-yard field goal by Baton Rouge native Dana Moore. The Tiger ' s record slipped to 7-1-1 and the Associated Press dropped them to I2th. i L Tiger Stadium was transformed into an orange-pelted bat- tleground as the Tigers snapped back from the Mississippi State defeat to trounce the seventh-ranl ed Florida State Seminoles, 55-21, and earned a trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl Classic. Freshman sensation Dalton Milliard broke loose for 185 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries and Alan Risher passed for three touchdowns amidst the orange -throwing fans. After the game, hysteria broke out m the stadium as over-enthusiastic supporters rushed the field in an attempt to topple the goalposts. The Tigers ' eighth win moved their ranking up to seventh on the AP poll tor the Orange Bowl-bound Bengals. The traditional rivalry- against Tulane put a bad taste in the mouths of Tiger enthusiasts as the Green Wave shocked LSU for the second year in a row, this time by a score of 31- 28. Tulane quarterback Mike McKay passed over and around the Bandits for three touchdowns and Green Wave running back Reggie Reginelli added one on the ground to spoil the season finale for the Tigers. Disappointment show- ed in the faces of fans and players alike as the New Orleans rivals won Louisiana bragging rights for the second time in two years. I have a sense of both the finality and the relief of reaching the end. More than that though, I have accumulated enough memories to fill this book. I have had the good fortune to work with some of the best people I could ever know. Everyone on staff gave 110 percent to the book. We never would have made spring deadline otherwise. I would like to take this opportunity now to express my thanks to those who have been important in the production of the book: 1983 Gumha: To Steve, the best managing editor I could ever have. His humor and bright outlook have often helped keep me going ... to Tracia. whose creative designs have formed the basis ot this book ... to Diana — always full ot great ideas and new concepts . . . to Joe and David, whose talent is surpassed only by their patience in putting up with me all year ... to all of our photographers, who have given the book its quality ... to Darryl. for always being ready to help out with anything (and for George Winston and fantastic back rubs). Morris Wood Fred Elsing Flo Walton I also want to give special thanks to Karl; I can ' t say enough about his division pages. And to Robert, who has worked as hard as the editors. To Jana and Linda for giving their weekends to help us out. To Mr. Fisher and Mrs. B. for everything they ' ve done for us ... I guess I could go on forever. If there was one thing which has made this book and these people so special, it is the fact that we ' ve been close friends, not just fellow staff members. I would like to thank all of my friends, both on staff and off. You ' ve all been a great help. One more very special thanks goes to my parents — their encouragement and support have meant more than I can express. Finally, I would just like to say thank you to everyone who has helped us in any way during the year (it ' s just that it ' s hard to remember clearly at 4:00 in the morning). I couldn ' t have done it without each and every one of you, and I wouldn ' t have wanted to. Tracey Post Editor-in-Chief I PS. Thanks for this layout Matt. k)i b .}! • V ' = MM
