Cummings I Concerts 77 - - % - ,va Athletics 80 Athletics Athletics 81 For the first time since 1962, the spotlight was focused on a new leader for LSU football. Though the stage and audience were greatly the same, a new era unfolded in Tigertown in 1980 with Jerry Sto- vall at the center of attention. In 1962, Jerry Stovall was run- ning for touchdowns as an All- American halfback on a Tiger team that posted a 9-1-1 record. He then went on to a professional football career with the St. Louis Cardinals, and returned to LSU in 1974 as an assistant coach under Head Coach Charlie McClendon. In 1979 he was appointed Varsity Club Coor- dinator. Less than a year after this appointment, he was thrust back into coaching on the heels of a bizarre set of circumstances in- volving the tragic death of Bo Rein. Stovall ' s first team was a remarkable one in many re- spects. On the field and off, the team seemed to be more disci- plined and united . . . and Stovall would not have had it any other way. Tiger Stadium was jammed with 77,535 Tiger fans, the third largest crowd in LSU history as the Stovall era began on Septem- ber 6 with nationally ranked but underrated Florida State. LSU even resurrected the old defen- sive Bandits for the occasion, but the defensive heroes were forced to stay on the field almost the entire game as a sputtering It ' s funny we scored 3 1 points and still got beat. LSU Quarterback Alan Risher Mississippi State November 15, 1980 82 Athletics offense simply refused to hold onto the football. Three fumbles, one interception and consistent penalties were the major factors in the 0-16 setback. Stovall com- mented about his first game as head coach, We didn ' t execute and we have a long ways to go, and though I ' m disappointed, I ' m proud of the effort, especially the defense. One week later, Stovall re- ceived his first coaching victory as the Tigers pummeled Kansas State, 21-0. The offense im- proved, but the final score was still closer than many expected. Against Colorado, the Bayou Bengals put forth their poorest effort of the young season. LSU frittered away a 20-0 second quarter lead and allowed the once-respected Buffaloes to tie the game with time running out. With 1:13 to play, however, Law- rence Williams stole a Colorado pass deep in Buff territory to set up a game-winning 17-yard field goal by David Johnston. The 23-20 score proved only that the jury was still very much undecided about the Tigers. LSU had outscored ancient rival Rice 192-10 in the last four meet- ings, and had not lost to the Owls since 1966. Disregarding a few flashes of brilliance, the Tiger offense was at its worst on a wet September 27th in Houston, but somehow managed to cling to a 7-3 lead late in the game. When Rice made its move, the Bengal defense had finally exhausted itself, and the Owls scored twice in the final 3:36. No one could believe it, but LSU had been stunned by Rice, 7-17. Athletics 83 Knowing they were ranked, we knew it would be tough. It was just a matter of everyone being fired up. LSU Nose Guard George Atiyeh Florida October 4, 1980 D. Rando 84 Athletics D. Zietz D. Zietz Just as the jury was ready to hand down a unanimous guilty decision for being only 2-2 against mostly mediocre opposition, the Tigers found a new beginning in Gaines- ville, Florida. Heavy underdogs against unbeaten and nationally ranked Florida, LSU made an unbe- lievable about-face from the Rice disaster to manhandle the Gators. Still fumbling (12 times), the LSU offense broke out of its chains to beat Florida 24-7. Halfback Jesse Myles found stardom in 148 yards and two TD ' s. Florida Coach Char- ley Pell described LSU this way: They ' ve fumbled 39 times and they ' re 3-2, so they must be pretty salty. They ' re probably the best 3-2 team in the country. A crowd of 76,094 saw the Bengals put together their best overall effort of the season to eke out a 21-17 thriller. Quarterback Alan Risher and the rest of the Ben- gal offense put LSU on top with a 74-yard TD march with 3:44 to play, but it was the Bandits who preserved the victory with a goal- line stand after Auburn had recov- ered a blocked put on the LSU 1 1 with 49 seconds left. The following week, LSU had its chances to put away Kentucky very early at Lexington, but did not, so the defense had to play an incredi- ble game of keeping the Wildcats out of the endzone. When the ' Cats finally did score, the Tiger offense woke up and drove 80 yards to win the game, 17-10. After a week off, LSU ex- 86 Athletics tended its SEC mark to a first place 4-0 with a 38-16 romp over Ole Miss before a regional TV audience. The Tigers opened up a close game in the second half and were never threatened again. The Tigers then traveled to Tuscaloosa on November 8th to play Alabama. The previously top-ranked Crimson Tide bounced back from a startling 6-3 upset loss to Mississippi State to beat LSU, 28-7. LSU hoped to vault back into the bowl picture by beating an unusually strong Mississippi State team. After a wild first half that ended at 24-24, State took charge with a 100-yard kickoff return to start the second half. They then went on to pile up an astonishing 55-31 victory. The 55 points were the most scored on any LSU team since 1914, and it was the first time since 1956 that anyone had scored more than 39 points against the Ti- gers. Early in the week prior to the Tulane game, LSU removed its name from the Peach Bowl bid list in order to concentrate solely on the Green Wave, and the move apparently paid off. Playing in hur- ricane-like conditions and on a field resembling the Gulf of Mexico, the Tigers dominated the Greenies, 24-7. The momentum shifted in LSU ' s favor after Chris Williams in- D. He couldn ' t have sum- med up better the immense function its research projects as well as its teaching role in the constant improvement of farm animals. At least 60% of the department ' s total effort lies in extensive research work. Through this valuable study they have increased the breeding potential of cattle, horses, swine, and sheep. More nutritional feeds con- taining balanced levels of vitamins and minerals have been developed that produce superior animals meatier beef cattle and swine, swifter and stronger horses, and dairy cows that produce more milk. Much attention has been paid to the Atchafalaya delta which is increasing rapidly due to the flow of 30% of the Mississippi ' s waters down that channel. The sedi- ment that is washed down into the basin is the only land that Louisiana is gaining everywhere else on the coast land is drifting slowly out to sea. This delta is marshland which provides a great nursery ground for the seafood that is so important to Louisiana ' s economy. The Mississippi is showing great signs of possibly shifting its course to the Atchafalaya river channel on its long path to the Gulf of Mexico. Many feel that the Old River structures built in 1963 will soon break and the river ' s waters will follow. There are a number of good reasons for attempting to prevent this change in the river ' s course. Morgan City would be flooded, and New Orleans ' water supply would be salty, with Gulf waters creeping up the Mississippi as we know it today. The lack of water in the Mississippi river bed would make it too shallow to act as the major transportation route it is today. The Center does not intend to make decisions on the reinforcement of the Old River structure, but rather intends only to provide facts to political, legal, and agricultural officials who will then make the decision on the river ' s future. People were searched, or not allowed to attend the games if they refused to be searched. D. Gary 234 Issues J I D. Gusler A Gumbo Controversy After its distribution, controversy erupted over the 1980 Gumbo because of nude photographs and other photographs which some LSU students and faculty members found objectionable. Ruth Miller, member of the Board of Supervisors, issued a resolution to eliminate the funding of the Gumbo, but was unable to find enough support on the Board to bring it about. An SGA survey revealed that 1163 students wanted the Gumbo to continue, while 83 students voted against continuing it. Issues 235 No Student Vehicles Allowed Stricter enforcement of campus traf- fic regulations has occurred in the past year. The regulations prohibit the travel and parking of student vehicles from Power House Lane to Highland Road and from the Nicholson Exten- sion to Dalrymple, with the exception of the CEB A and ROTC parking lots, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on week- days. Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs David F. Hull, Jr. said that the stricter enforcement of these regulations is to discourage intra- campus traffic during the day so as to provide a safer campus for pedestrians and bicyclists. 236 Issues M. Kleiner Mike ' s Cage Mike the Tiger ' s new home, which was partially funded by an SGA referendum which brought the project approx- imately $55,000, is expected to be completed by September 1981. D. Lawrence D. Gary SGA Impeachments Many students were re- moved from either elected or appointed SGA positions by SGA President Mike Futrell and the SGA Assem- bly this year. Vice-President Ricky Beyl was impeached by the SGA Assembly for missing required meetings. Later, the SGA Assembly Speaker, the Chemistry and Physics Representative, an Off-Campus Representa- tive, and a Division B Men ' s Housing Representative were also expelled from office. SGA President Mike Fut- rell also fired four ombuds- men because he said they just were not doing their job. Issues 237 French House Rededication The French House was rededicated in April upon the completion of major renovations. Francois de Laboulaye, French ambassador to the U.S. and the son of the former French ambassador who originally laid the cornerstone of the French House in 1935, told the crowd gathered for the occasion that Louisiana was fighting against the loss of its soul by preserving vestiges of its French heritage such as LSU ' s La Maison Francaise. The French House now accomodates the national headquarters of Phi Kappa Phi, an academic honor society, the LSU Press, and a cafeteria serving beig- nets. I D. Zietz 238 Issues mor cjg- G. Babin Suit Charges Professors Stole Trade Secrets Five LSU engineering professors were involved in a multi-million dollar lawsuit alleging that they stole trade secrets. The five professors are: Gerald D. Whitehouse, Director of the Division of Engineering Research; A. J. McPhate, professor of Mechanical Engineering; Thomas C. Shelton, assistant professor of Mechanical En- gineering; Dupree Maples, professor of Mechanical En- gineering; and Charles A. Whitehurst, Associate Dean for research and graduate activities in the College of Engineering. The suit alleges that Whitehouse and McPhate were employed by Engineering Mechanical Services, Inc. of Baton Rouge, and then peddled trade secrets concerning a mechanical repair design concept and computer programs for examining the cause of fail- ure in large engine components to Applied Mechanical Technology, Inc., a consulting firm headquartered in Gonzales with which Whitehurst, Shelton, Maples, and Dean Richard Matula of the College of Engineering were affiliated. Charges were later dismissed on professors Whitehurst, Shelton, and Maples. R. Scheuermann Issues 259 Early in the fall semester, fire struck John- ston Hall, a freshman women ' s dormitory, destroying one room and seriously damaging five other rooms. This fire occurred after an inspection team found 450 violations of the State Fire Code in 82 of the 99 LSU buildings they inspected. In April, a serious fire broke out in another LSU building Peabody Hall, a classroom buildling which also houses the College of Education. The top floor of this building, one of the oldest buildings on the LSU campus, was completely gutted, while the rest of the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage. Damage to Peabody Hall was estimated at $ 1 million, and over 4,000 students and 90 faculty members were relocated in the wake of this serious blaze. D. Gary 240 Issues Issues 241 Ronald Reagan Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan slated a rally at the Assembly Center on September 23 which drew over 6,000 peo- ple, including some Southern University students who claimed that the SU Band was forced to play the rally. Murrill re- signed from his post as chief ad- ministrator of the Baton Rouge campus of the LSU System to accept a position as senior vice- president for research and develop- ment at Ethyl Corporation in Janu- ary, 1981, after serving as LSU ' s chancellor since 1974. The LSU Board of Supervisors appointed Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Otis Wheeler as interim chancellor until the search for a new permanent chancellor was completed. Seventy-eight persons applied for the chancellor position. The Board of Supervisors then cut the list to forty applicants after screen- ing the applicants, and then eleven finalists were chosen after more screening. The group of eleven was then cut to five, who were recom- mended to President Wooden, who then recommended them for inter- view by the Board of Supervisors. In May the Board chose Dr. James A. Chan commented, What we are looking for is the typical girl-next- door image. Practically all of the division editors contributed their thoughts and criticisms to this book, all of which made this book even better than it would otherwise have been. As you may have noticed, this book has more and larger photographs with fewer actual words. We tried to stress design as well as emphasize the university and campus, which had been neglected in the past few annuals. In closing I must thank those whose efforts created this book. First, I want to thank those who stuck it out to the end: Matt, for coming up with all those great ideas, designing his section as well as the Organizations and Greeks; David Z., for managing to print those photographs at the last minute with the utmost excellence; Mary, who managed to do an even better job this year and who finally managed to learn how to fit copy on layouts (just kidding Mary . . . ); And David D., who came by and never once minded doing some more work for us well into the summer. These editors all deserve credit, all worked long after the paychecks stopped coming in . . . I must also thank Darryl, who saved us by photographing those 3 colleges at the end of the semester, and Tracey, who was always there when you needed her. Those whose efforts should not go unnoticed are Ron and Misha, whom I ' m sure, gave it their all . Finally, I want to thank the people who weren ' t paid editors, yet contributed as much time and effort as the rest of us. Those people are: Dawn, whose cheerful personality and invaluable help made it a pleasure to work on this book on the summer weekends; Jodi, Donna, Celeste, Lori, and Libby, all who typed this or drew that with the utmost enthusiasm; and last, my and Matt ' s families for putting up with the mess while we worked at our houses during the breaks.
