Some critics stated that 1968 was a bad year for this nation and for the world community. Never- theless, the United States witnessed the flight of Apollo 8, man's first voyage to the moon and back. Only history will tell if critics were correct in their evaluation. The following is a capsule summary of some of the events which were transpiring while we were attending classes, studying and partici- pating in campus life at LSU during 1968-69 . . . The flight crew of Apollo 8, consisting of astro- nauts Borman, Lovell and Anders, gave the world a Christmas present as they circled the moon and televised pictures from inside the spacecraft. ln ad- dition to the television programs sent back to earth, the astronauts took many excellent photographs of the moon's surface. The rest of the events of the year was not so happy though. For a nation with a history of presidential as- sassinations, the year 1968 saw the assassination of black leader, Dr.- Martin Luther King, while he was helping striking sanitation workers. ln addi- tion to this, was the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, brother of the late president. Kennedy was assassinated after his California primary vic- tory. After extensive detective work conducted by agents of this government and Great Britain's famed Scotland Yard, authorities captured James Earl Ray who was accused of the King assassina- tion. Sirhan B. Sirhan was accused of the Kennedy assassination and was brought to trial early in 1969.
