H J Often termed the living room of the campus, students use the Union for just that. On any given day, one can see students conversing, sitting, read- ing newspapers, waiting for a friend, or studying in the living room areas on the main floor of the Union. Opening off of the central living room area is the Union's Art Gallery. Maintained by the Union Art Committee, the Art Gallery features exhibits ranging from sculpture to modern art. This year the gallery housed an exhibit of faculty and stu- dent art. Additional exhibits included sculpture works by Frank Hayden, a ceramics display by Paul Minnis, photographs by Fred Packard and an exhibit of batik and water colors. And, as always, there was studying. Whether it was in the dorm room, in the apartment, in the Union or in the library, students could be seen studying all over campus, including on the Tiger Train. Although we call it studying, perhaps a better term would be cramming, since everyone practices this at some time during his college ca- reer. Of course everyone studies or crams during the week of mid-terms and finals. During this period it is virtually impossible to find a seat in the library and quiet places are at a premium. Yet the inventive student generally manages to make it through exam periods with a little help from stay-awake pills and gallons of coffee. Every- one devises his own system according to what works best for him. Studying is probably one of the least attractive'but most essential phases of college life.
