DR. DANIEL BORTH Auditor THE YEAR HENRY V. HOWE Director ot the School of Geology With the University still unsettled, still seeking a firm foundation upon which to rebuild its financial and administrative departments, the 6,049 students who matriculated at Louisiana State University in September encountered a stiffened academic program, which promised to raise the scholastic standard of the school. In the face of a world at war, with National Defense the chief concern of military and civilian authorities alike, it was only natural that the male students should find, also, a more rigorous military life confronting them. In the first convocation of the year, Dr. Paul M. Hebert, acting president, welcomed both new and returning students, declared the University as being staunchly behind the President ' s National Defense policy. Early in the year, a bureau of educational research was established to provide statistics on material of specific and general interest to the University, as recommended by the American Council on Education in its report the previous summer. On October 1, Arden O. French, general secretary of the University Y. M. C. A. for years, was named Dean of Men by the Board of Supervisors. Later, Benjamin F. Rogers was named Y secretary. On the week-end of October 12, delegates from the Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. chapters at four other Louisiana colleges met on the campus with the local chapters for their annual state -wide conference. One thousand five hundred and MARVIN G.
