- c TUQU For over a year Louisiana State University had been an institution with- out a head. When the new Board of Supervisors met, its consuming interest was to place the University on a solid footing, from which it could rise to a respected position among institutions of higher learning. Working behind closed doors, the Board set about the task of selecting a new and permanent president. On Tuesday, January 14, it announced six men as nominees for the position: Dr. Paul M. Hebert, Acting Presi- dent of the University; General Campbell B. Hodges, commander of the Fifth Corps Area of the U. S. Army; Dr. Roy L. Thompson, president of the Federal Land Bank in New Orleans; Dr. Charles E. Friley, presi- dent of Iowa State College; Major Fred C. Frey, Dean of the Univer- sity; and Dr. Nicholas Bauer, Superintendent of Public Schools in New Orleans. On Monday, March 10, the Board met to make the final selec- tion. Tensely, the University, the State of Louisiana, and the press held their breath in anticipation of the long-awaited announcement. At long last, the door opened. Chairman Smitherman dramatically revealed the name of the new President of Louisiana State University Major Gen- eral Campbell Blackshear Hodges. James E. Smitherman, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, announces the long-awaited selection. CU]
