3 In this, the 1941 Gumbo, it has been our purpose to create a yearbook which is truly representative of life at Louisiana State University. A college yearbook is often the only album one has of his school days, the only record of, perhaps, the most eventful years of his life. If this edition of the Gumbo records the com- posite picture of the year in permanent form so that in the future it may be re -lived in the minds of all the students, we will be justly rewarded for our efforts. Avoiding the bizarre, we have attempted to produce a modern book which is both dignified and conservative. With the hope that, in future years, it will still grace one ' s library fittingly, we present the 1941 Gumbo to the student body for whom it was created. .3 377J

These activities and interests you have shared with friends and acguaintances and they will become treasured memories in later years. It is hoped that your life has been greatly enriched and strengthened by your contacts and experiences at the University; that as you leave these halls and go out to join the loyal and devoted band of L S. U. Alumni you will carry with you through life that old Tiger Spirit that has been a never-failing source of strength and suste- nance in every crisis of the University ' s history. It is my further hope that from your years at the University you have gathered that wisdom and discernment that will enable you ' To be at home in all lands and ages; to count nature a familiar acguaintance and art an intimate friend; to gain a standard for the appreciation of other men ' s work and the criticism of your own ; to carry the keys of the world ' s library in your pocket, and feel its resources behind you in whatever you undertake; to make hosts of friends among the men of your own age who are to be leaders in all walks of life; to lose yourself in generous enthusiasms and cooperation with others for common ends. In after years, as there comes to you a realization of your debt to the University may you be impelled through a sense of loyalty and gratitude to make your own personal contribution to its continued growth and influence. y y 2CLuf 777.
