Z-'Q-5 EXPLANATION OF THEME OUISIANA, the land of Evangeline, the home of eternal spring, the haven of the dreamer, the heaven of the artists, is the living reminder of the glories of the past with its struggles in racial history, in political equality, and in social justice. Glorious and historic is the State of Louisiana: over it hovers the romance of the strife and struggle among nations for the supremacy of the Mississippi Valley: over its territory the grim battalions of France, England, Spain, the Confederate States, and the United States of America have fought during the ages of French absolutism, English monarchism, Spanish splendor,and American independence. Eight flags have proudly waved over this ground--- the Union faclf of old Britain: the crested banner of the Bourbons: the tri-color of Napoleonic France: the emblem of the short-lived West Florida Republic: the symbol of the free State of Louisiana: the Stars and Bars of the Confederacy---all symbols of autocracies and democracies, some long since forgotten, and then at last succeeded by the Stars and Stripes of the United States---Old Cloryl Our theme is the glorious history of our State---a State which though humiliated and discouraged at times, has at last risen to unforeseen heights of greatness. When we have gone forth from our Alma Mater, may we fulfill the promise of our heritage and add glory to Louisiana. ffg
