WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S THE TAMING GF THE SHREW SYNOPSIS The battle of wits and wills between a sharp-tongued vixen and her stubborn suitor has long been an object of delight for audiences who are looking for hearty belly laughs at struggles that are all too familiar. A wealthy gentleman of Padua, Baptista, has two daughters. The elder, Katherine CKateJ is beautiful but extremely willful and critical. Her sister, Bianca, is also beautiful but of a more gentle dis- position. Needless to say, Bianca has more than her share of suitors, while no one dares to ask for Katherine's hand. Baptista, being not only wealthy but wise, declares that there will be no talk of a marriage for Bianca until Katherine is safely wooed and wed. Enter one Petruchio, a carefree gentleman who is searching for a wealthy wife. Learning that a sizeable dowry comes with Kate's hand, he speedly sets out to woo her. While Bianca's admirers concoct various disguises and assorted trickeries to gain her love, Petruchio sets about wooing the astonished Kate, who has never encountered this kind of ardor, or resistance, before. Through a series of what we now might term, euphemistically, as behavior modification techniques transforms Kate into a dutiful and loving wife. Lucentio ........ Tranio ............... r l l WILLIAM SHAKESPEARES ROMEO AND JULIET ' SYNOPSIS . Two noble families of Verona, the Capulets and the .Montagues, are locked in stubborn enmity that goes back 'before anyone can remember. Even so, Romeo, the young ,heir of the Montagues, attends the great ball of the fCapulets in disguise. He falls in love with Juliet, the 14 iyear old daughter of the house and a mutual passion is ignited. They declare their love and desire to be together in the famous balcony scene. Shortly after, the lovers are 'married secretly in the cell of Friar Lawrence, a monk who hopes their marriage will be a catalyst for ending their families' feud. 2 Subsequent to the exchange of vows, Romeo's friend, Mercutio, is challenged to a duel by Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Romeo tries to intercede and make peace but wTybalt persists and slays Mercutio. He then comes after lRomeo who kills him. As punishment, the Prince of 3 Verona banishes Romeo from the city. Meanwhile, Juliet's father has arranged her marriage to 1 Paris. When she protests, he lashes out at her with great :ferocity telling her that if she does not obey him, she can thang, beg, starve or die in the streets. Juliet's resolve to escape and join her husband, Romeo, is intensified. She decides to take a sleeping potion given her by the Friar that will bring on a semblence of death. The plan is that the Friar will take her to a tomb where Romeo will be summoned to attend her when she awakens. Due to unexpected detainment of the messengers, news of Juliet's death reaches Romeo before the Friar's letter of explanation. Romeo buys poison, rushes to Juliet's tomb and seeing her lifeless, drinks it. She awakens by his side, sees him really dead and stabs herself. Over the bodies of their dead children, the Capulets and Montagues make a tardy and sorrowful peace, realizing that their hatred has caused this tragedy. Lord Montague vows to erect a golden statue to 'the tme and faithful Juliet' and the Capulets will do the same for Romeo. Elm- CAST Lord Capulet 84 Friar John ......
