history LSUA is noT new To Alexandria. Louisiana STaTe UniversiTy TirsT began in Alexandria in I86O beTore moving To BaTon Rouge in l87O. The presenT LSUA was begun in The Fall oT i960 aT a new locaTion which is locaTed Tive miles souTh oT Alexandria on a Track oT 3.300 acres, which was Torm- erly Oakland PlanTaTion. Two Trame buildings, housing The library and The science and languages laboraTories were added To The exisTing buildings, which had been used Tor a Training school in VocaTional AgriculTure. The TirsT permanenT building, Oakland l-lall, was buil+ in The summer oT l96l. A Temporary gymnasium was also provided Tor l-lealTh and Physical EducaTion insTruc- Tion. LSUA began wiTh only a Treshman class in i960 buT a sophomore class was added in The Fall oT l96l. Many basic courses ThaT can be used Toward a maior in many Tields are oTTered. ApproximaTely sixTy courses are being oTTered and There are ThirTy-Tive TaculTy members who are well gualiTied and oTTer insTrucTion comparable To ThaT oT any college. AlThough LSUA is a commuTer college, iT oTTers a well rounded cur- riculum which will prepare The sTudenTs To conTinue Their educaTion aT oTher colleges wiTh li++Ie or no diTTiculTy. Plans Tor The TuTure include a new library, caTeTeria, sTudenT union building. audiTorium and oTher general purpose buildings.
