At the end of this fiscal year on June 30, 1961, Dr. R. L. Ropp will have concluded his twelfth year as president of Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. During these twelve years, three successive four-year gener- ations of students normally have come and gone in sequence as classes beginning as freshmen and finishing as graduating seniors. In addition, thousands of others in this span of a dozen years have entered Tech and graduated-or departed for other reasons. Because of this natural turn-over of ever-changing enrollees, the individual student perhaps neglects to make full appraisal of the progress that has taken place about him for his instruc- tional and recreational benefit, hence this brief review. Probably few of the present students-and not many of the faculty members, for that mattergcould list all of the buildings erected on the campus during the twelve years of the in- cumbent administration. Could you name fifteen? That will be the number, including the new library building now nearing completion. The other fourteen, constructed at the rate of more than one a year in the last twelve years, are as follows: Adams, Cottingham and Richardson dormitories, the Harris Infirmary, Memorial Gymnasium, Carson-Taylor Science Hall, the Nursery Building, Dairy Processing Plant, Dudley, Pearce, McFarland and Jenkins dormitories, the Butler Building Ware- house, and the Student Center Building. These structures, together with equipment, furniture and other facilities, represent a total cost of approximately S8,000, 000. This twelve-year expansion in the physical plant strikes us as being phenomenal, but we have learned that needs for many other buildings already have been outlined to serve the students who will come this way after us. In our study of Tech's status, we were impressed also with the increase in student enrollment, particularly in the last dec- ade. In the fall of 1950, the enrollment here was 2,154 In the fall of 1960, the number was 3,72O, which is an increase of seventy-two percent. Through these twelve years, the number of Tech faculty members with doctors' degrees has increased from 16 to seventy-five. Incidentally, an analysis made this year shows that the average of teaching experience of the faculty members here amounts to more than 22 years. That speaks well for the stabil- ity of the teaching staff at Tech. These are some of the things we thought you would like to know about Tech in 1961. The Lagniappe Staff at home.
