At the outset, I wish to state that as the years roll by the old Tech spirit of friendliness, good fellowship, and sound scholarship grips me more firmly and inspires me to put forth added effort to uphold the high ideals and noble aspirations upon which our institution was founded fifty-nine years ago. This year has been marked by great decisions from both national and inter¬ national standpoints—decisions which all of us hope and pray eventually will bring peace and harmony to all people everywhere. For us at Tech the year has brought continued progress in spite of the still unstable conditions existing throughout the world. First of all, we are proud of the fact that our enrollment has increased considerably above the average of that in other colleges and universities in the nation. The teaching staff has been strengthened in several departments of the college, and the physical plant has been enhanced by the completion of our magnificent gymnasium and other improvements. Our athletic teams have made good records, and thousands of our friends have visited the campus to witness the games and attend ether functions sponsored by the college. Truly, a brilliant chapter in the eventful history of Tech has been recorded this year. I join all of you in the thrill of having been a part of it all; and I pledge continued loyalty to you and deep allegiance to the philosophy for which our college stands. Faithfully yours, R. L. Several freshmen were on hand to try their stuff at college foot¬ ball, and they proved they were well-prepared for the game. Freshman quarterback Milford Andrews, by completing passes to two more freshmen, Larry Grissom and Gayle Wise, placed his team up to the 3-yard stripe, where he went over for the only score of the ball game. This was McNeese ' s first GSC game. McNeese is down on the 30. 124 Tech Upsets Florida State Gordon Brown End Jimmy Brown Back Tech 32, F. S. U. 13 Tech scalped the Florida State University Indians 32-13 in an upset before 13,000 fans in Tallahassee, Florida. This was the Indians ' first defeat before the home crowd in three sea¬ sons and their fifth loss in 35 games. Jackie Martin and freshman Russell Rain- bolt sparked the team to victory, as well as Bud McMichael and Jimmy Brown. The Canines netted a total of 446 yards against F.S.U. ' s 271. Four Tech passes out of nine were completed. Tech squad ready to fly to Tallahassee . 125 The Tigers held — this time. Canines Hold That Tiger Gayle Dick Back George Ferrington Back Tech 26, Memphis State 7 The strong Canine defense held the visiting Memphis State Tigers to three yards net gain on the ground, with Ferrington, Worsham, Golden, Adcox, and Smi th starring against the single- wingers from the hills of Tennessee. By halftime Tech had only six points and was trailing by a single point. But soon the Techmen began drive after drive when Bay Worsham stopped a guick-kick in the oppon¬ ent ' s end zone during the third quarter and put the Bulldogs out front. They went ahead for two more T.D. ' s, allowing the Tigers to score no more. 126 Tech 34, C. Oklahoma 6 With neither team able to muster up much of a scoring spree during the first half, Tech was leading the Broncos of Central Oklahoma State by a narrow 7-6 margin at halftime. Martin ' s fine 26-yard run was responsible for the Canine score. The third quarter, however, was quite a different story. Tech scored three touchdowns in this period, making it four wins in a row when the final whistle blew. McMichaeTs conversions again proved accurate, amounting to four out of six attempts. The locals gained 448 total yards. John Fischer Tackle Billy Golden Tackle Broncs Tamed By Big Score Riding the Broncs. 127 TECH Tech 7, S. L. C. 7 The local eleven needed only one more win to possess undisputed claim to first place in the GSC, but Southeastern wanted to stay in the race. SLC and Tech battled to a 7-7 tie, to put the race in a mad scramble. Martin led the way for the Bulldogs and went over for a T.D. Although injured, Bud McMichael came in and converted. Don Lambert made the only score for the Lions. Tech was still undefeated, and she was tied for first place in the conference race. The K-9 ' s gained 346 yards on 15 first downs, while holding their favori te oppon¬ ents to 120 yards and 8 first downs. Counting on the passing offense to give them an advantage over the Techsters, NSC was stopped cold by a determined line and an ever-ready defensive backfield. Prac¬ tically the entire team played starring roles in a game well-fought for our side. This was Tech ' s fifth straight win of the season, with no losses. Martin scored first for Tech by galloping 34 spectacular yards and leaving opposing Bulldogs lying on the field. The best run of the game came when Buzz Bond took a kick on his own 47 and ran 53 yards through the SLI men. With only 90 seconds to go, we were six points behind. Bud also converted five times, making it a perfect day in the extra-point division. The aerial offense of the Wildcats gained them considerable yardage, but only two tallies—one in the sec¬ ond period and the other near the end of the game. Our own passing by Brown and Andrews came in handy, especially in setting up T.D. plays. 132 Tech 0, Miss. Southern 52 Tech ' s only defeat of the season was handed them by the higher-ranking Mississippi Southerners, who gave the Bulldogs one of their worse losses in L. P. I. history. Having given up their only loss to Alabama, the Mississip- pians were much too tough for the Canines. The hosts were in their best playing con¬ dition, and took advantage of every play that came their way. Tech was held to 129 yards gained, while the Southerners, who scored in every quarter, netted 609. Southern Hands Tech Only Defeat 4 We don ' t know what happened on this play.
