Patsy King— Organizations Editor LaVelle Rambin, Sports Editor Jesse Grice, Snap-shot Editor 2 52725 Our Lady of the Mist k A year of hard work mingled with good times, a year of learning, of growing, of feeling our¬ selves a part of that unique society which is college life — a year of looking ahead in antici¬ pation of a better world. Ill 3 This is the story of a year at Tech. It is a story that could have happened on any college campus anywhere in America. But the buildings, the scenes, and the faces that appear on these pages tell a very special story to those of us who worked and played and lived at Tech in ' 52. WMPiPiiil L 4 5 he grounds of Louisiana Tech comprise a cam¬ pus proper of fifty acres; a tract of twenty-nine acres adjacent to the campus; and a demonstration farm of 352 acres situated about a half mile from the cam¬ pus. The college buildings, including the smaller ones, number forty, with a new gymnasium now under construction. • The Crowning event • The home management house and the Home Eco¬ nomics Building. he many modern build¬ ings and the constantly ex¬ panding campus of Louis¬ iana Tech are indicative of the college ' s progressive spirit and growing influence. } The home of Tech ' s president and family Harper Hall, freshman girls ' dormitory 8 DfDICflTIOnOr This, the LAGNIAPPE of 1952, is dedicated to college life and to the particular meaning that it holds for each of us. Perhaps for some of us the independent nature of campus life has been a means of self-discovery. To many the mix¬ ture of hard work and good times has given a feeling of belonging in an adult world. To others college life has been the opening of doors of opportunity. To all of us it is a volume of pleasant memories and lasting friendships. 10 11 LO i! G jfei 13 jicLqitiafrfie - • conifim • i. ACTIVITIES V. ORGANIZATIONS NJIIIIIIII PfitSIOfDT Dear Tech Students, I appreciate being given the opportunity through this, your year book of memories, to commend all of you for the splendid attitude you have exemplified in all fields of activity during the school year now ending. Although the national emergency and general world conditions have cut a deep swath in our enrollment, those of you who were privileged to remain on the campus have been vigilant in developing yourselves intel¬ lectua lly, physically, morally, and spiritually. Truly, this period through which we are moving presents a tremendous challenge — a challenge which has sobered all of us in our thinking of what can happen when the freedom of men is jeopardized. May the lessons you have learned in class¬ rooms and laboratories and the wholesome relations you have had with fellow students and teachers alike on the old Tech campus this year serve to guide you in meeting this challenge regardless of the path you follow in later life. Joe Aillet, Athletic Director TECH 1931 Head Coach Joe Aillet has made a fine record during the twelve years he has been mentor of the Tech Bulldogs. During these years he led them to Gulf States Conference championships in the years of ' 41, ' 45, ' 47, and ' 49. All the rest of these years, except this past season, the team has finished in second place. Two of the Techsters were selected for the all-GSC de¬ fensive team this year. They were linebacker Wyman Lee Collie, who was especially noted for his quick diagnosing of plays, and halfback John (Bud) McMichael, a hard-hitting tackier who intercepted many enemy passes. McMichael was also second in the conference punting. It was dog eat dog, with the bulldogs from both schools fighting for a win. But it was S. L. I. ' s game all the way, with Herron leading the visitors to victory by the accuracy of his passes. By the half S. L. I. was leading by 27-0. During the third quarter Tech drove down to the 10-yard line, but they were unsuccessful. Another Herron pass in the final quarter gave S. L . I. a 34-0 lead. With only three minutes to play Knecht got the pigskin near the goal line, after which came that old B-B pass, from Brown to Bates, that made a tally for the locals. Gene Knecht makes several yards before being stopped by two tacklers. S. L. I. UPSETS 118 Tecli 34 - Howard Payne 27 Halfback Bud McMichael comes in for the kill ' 1 Gene Knecht, all GSC back, led the Bulldogs to their initial victory by gaining 107 yards in 25 attempts against the single-winging How¬ ard Payne Yellowjackets. Freshmen backs Benji Smith and Pete Terracina also displayed some fine running. Two spectacular 90-yard runs were made—Knecht for Tech and White for H. P. With the score 27-27 in the final quar¬ ter, the Techmen made a long drive down the field, climaxed by a seven-yard plunge by Cotton Hildreth. This gave the Canines their seven-point lead that won the game. TECH HOMECOMING 119 E. T. S. 27 Tecli 7 With neither team able to score in the first quarter, the tough Lionmen from East Texas State capitalized on a fumble recoverd early in the second quarter to go for their first T. D. As the first half was coming to an end, the Texans climaxed a long drive with six more points. Both T. D. ' s came in the form of a pass from accurate Jim Gray to end Thomas McCormack. In the third round the Tech eleven showed what they could do with fumbles themselves, for two plays after John Fischer recovered a Lion fumble Jim Brown passed to Joe Strother for the only Tech touchdown. The Texans managed to give the Techmen one of their worst defeats of the season. John Fischer James (Cotton) Hildreth E. T. S. MPS The Tech defensive team charges in on an East Texas passer. 120 Memphis State 26 - Teeli 14 ' Way up in Tennessee the Canines took on the Memphis State College Tigers, and led by 14 points at half-time. After Tommy Woodall captured a fum¬ ble on the Tech 28, the Techmen drove all the way down for the first six points. Later they charted a course down the field for another score. Ed Michael converted twice. The initial Memphis T. D. came as a result of a bad Tech punt while the Bulldogs were in home ter¬ ritory. The most spectacular T. D. came when the Tigers received a punt on their ten. After being lateraled twice, the ball was toted 90 yards. Gene Knecht Gerald Mardis CAMMS Two Bulldogs stop a Lion- man near the 40 -yard line. An East Texan carries the pigskin several yards be¬ fore being hauled down by a Techster. EIGHT STRAIGHT OVER Bud” gets off a good punt behind some good blocking. 122 Tech made it eight straight over North¬ western State at the State Fair stadium in Shreveport. The first score was a result of two good runs by halfback Hildreth. Another T. D. was chalked up when quarterback Jim¬ my Brown completed a pass to the outstand¬ ing freshman end, Kenneth Bates. Halftime score: 14-0. After a great halftime performance had been given, the Bulldogs came roaring back again for another T. D. by the two B ' s. After completing several passes the Demons man¬ aged to get six points for their only score. Michael ' s smart toe came through with all three conversions. N. S. C. Gerald Mardis snags the ball lor several yards gain. Gene Yarbrough prepares to dig through the line deep in Demon territory. The Canines scored what the experts called an upset over the Wildcats of Pineville. Tech led off with a nice 51- yard pass from Brown to Bates to start the scoring. In the third round Hildreth sported a 41-yard gallop for another Tech score, but not before the Wildcats had chalked up 14 points of their own through the artistic south-paw throwing of quarter¬ back Wesley Dyer. Another score put the Bulldogs out in front. Then the ' Cats began fighting desperately for another tally. It was then that Joe Ross ' discovery of a flaw in the Louisiana College strategy was used to an effective end. Final score: Tech 20—L. C. 14. 123 Miss. .Son III or ii 33 - Tech 7 As is usually the case, the winner of the GSC was decided with the tilt between Tech and Mississippi Southern. In the first quarter Knecht plowed over several of the men from Hattiesburg for a 60-yard dash to pay dirt. Michael converted to make the score 7-0. The next round witnessed three touchdowns for the Southerners, who were really M on t he ball. The third and fourth quarters each witnessed a tally for the men from down south. Tech was unable to score any after their first T. D. Joe Ross Walter Savage SOUTHERNERS A Bulldog tries an end run around the Southerners. The game between Tech and Southeastern Oklahoma State was all La. Tech ' s. The Bull¬ dogs managed to score at least once in each quarter. All the Tech eleven gave the Savages their all, but a 5-yard T. D. by McMichael was the thriller-dil- ler of the game. With only 35 seconds left in the first half, Knecht threw to Hildreth for the fourth Tech touchdown. The only score the Oklaho¬ mans got came in the third quarter when they capitalized on a Tech fumble. Later in the game Robert Fenner got some good passes by the opponents ' defense, and Red Rawls showed the fans some expert running when he paced 62 yards for the final T. D. 124 Southeastern 19 Tech 7 Jimmy Sneed Jesse Storts Tech had a little bad luck taming the Lions of Southeastern. Early in the initial playing period one of the Lions recovered a fumble in Tech ' s end zone. They converted to lead 7-0. However, there came a B-B pass once again, and Kenneth Bates caught an 18-yard pass from Jimmy Brown to go on for a T. D. after scampering 45 yards through S. L. C. ' s secondary. In the last half the Lions got loose from their cages twice more to give them a prominent lead. Bud McMichael did some very fine booting seven times for an average of 41.4 yards. TAKE G. S. C. A Southerner fails to stop a hard-running Canine. I 125 Coach Cecil Crowley THE 1953 Coach Cecil Crowley ' s quintet appeared to be headed for a very successful season this year when the Bulldogs won their first eight games. However, the tide turned about the middle of the season, when the boys struck a rough grain in the hardwood. The team won every non-conference game, but they could only pull through with seven conference wins out of a total of sixteen conference games played. Tech placed third in the state N. A. I. B. competition, and tied with Northwestern for sixth place in the Gulf State Conference. Front row: Crawford Vines, Dan Dupree, Jimmy Bates, Robert Bertrand, Joe Mott, Jerry Lovett, Benny Looney. His 316 points in GSC competition gave him the high-point title. Jerry beat Red Latham ' s title to the most points scored in one season by a Tech player. Lovett chalked up 434 points to go ' way out in front of Latham ' s 340. Also his over-all total for the four seasons of playing amounted to 1,086, six more than Red ' s sum. Besides possessing scoring abilities, Jerry is a good backboard man and a real hus¬ tler . Joe Mott prepares to drop one in against the Gents. HARDWOOD A Spring Hill man unsuccessfully tries to stop L. V. Other notables on the hardwood were fast- moving dribblers like Joe Mott and Robert Bertrand. Mott was extremely instrumental in setting up and carrying out plays, and Bertrand was especially excellent with tricky movements and odd shots. Entering the scene about the middle of the season, fresh¬ man L. V. Norris gained a seat with the first five by his dependable scoring with long one-handed throws. Newcomer Bill Baily is an excellent backboard player and is noted mostly for his good guarding. Craw¬ ford Vines and Paul Kendrick did some hard playing as centers. 129 Berry Hinton, Baseball Coach THE 19 5 2 1952 SQUAD CATCHERS George Berry, James Farrar, George Ferrington.
