HUGHES 1 SCHOOL OF The student in the School of Arts and Sciences is required to acquaint himself with the main fields of intellectual interest and to acquire, through his major study, a thorough knowledge of some special field. The school in- eludes the departments of Art, Chemistry, English and Foreign Languages, Journalism, Mathe¬ matics, Music, Physics, Social Sci¬ ences, and Zoology. A group of English students at the desk of Miss Alma Burk, associate professor. As part of preparation for careers as laboratory technicians, turn girls run an experiment in the medical lab. 26 -

AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY On the farm campus are a mod¬ ern creamery, greenhouses, dairy and livestock barns, silos, a live¬ stock judging pavilion, a poultry plant, a potato curing house, freezer locker plants, farm mach¬ inery buildings, a sawmill, a dry kiln, a weather station, orchards and gardens, pastures, fields, and forests. A class receives instruction in animal hus¬ bandry from Thomas Strickland. Techsters who made a field trip to a livestock show in Fort Worth. A prize winner in the annual livestock competition.

ARTS AND SCIENCES The facilities of Keeny Hall, the Music, Dramatic Arts and Chemistry Buildings and Lomax Hall are used by the school to in¬ struct students in its variety of subjects. The newest and fastest developing of these fields are philosophy, geography and radio technique. Two classmates and Miss Elizabeth Bethea, professor of art, examine the work done in a fresh¬ man course for education students. Marshall Bretz, associate professor, in¬ structs a music major at the organ. Each year the work of sev¬ eral departments is made pub¬ lic through Tech Theater and radio productions, recitals, and regular art exhibits. 27
