One of the finest dormitories in the South, it is equipped with a modern cafeteria. Aswell Hall houses wom¬ en of the junior class, while Harper Hall is the home of sophomores and freshmen. A radio studio, a little theater, a little concert hall, practice rooms, offices, and classrooms are part of the facilities provided. FOREMOST i, 4 ‘Here ' s to you ” in the “Tonk.” Dear Tech Students, Although the ominous clouds of war hang heavy over the world, my message to you is one of hope and faith — hope that a world-wide holocaust can and will be averted and faith that regardless of the turn of events our way of life may be perpetuated. To those who have joined the colors in this conflict, to those who will be called to active duty this year, and to those of you who may be privileged to remain on the campus until graduation, I send a message of good cheer and best wishes for a job well done. May the lessons learned in the classrooms and laboratories and the inspiration received from mingling with teachers and students alike on the old Tech campus serve as beacon lights to guide all of you wherever you go or whatever your tasks may be. My observation of life on the Tech campus this year leads me to the definite conclusion that we have demonstrated in the fullest sense the unity, the service, and the action so vitally needed in the conduct of affairs among the freedom loving peoples of the world today. Let us continue to exercise this philosophy in the years that lie ahead. 21 22 THE SCHOOLS Wherever there is a college there are ball games, hayrides, “bull” sessions, laughter in the halls, but a college does not exist for these things. Because people are curious about the past and awed by the mys¬ teries of the test tube, because they must learn to build and plant, be¬ cause they must meditate on God and man and seek always for a higher truth, colleges must be. This section of the Lagniappe is a new one, dedicated especially to those Tech students whose pressing motivation is to know. 23 DEAN M. HAYNE FOLK, JR. SCHOOL OF The three departments in the School of Agriculture and For¬ estry, namely, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Botany, and the Department of Forestry, offer ten curricula lead¬ ing to the degree of Bachelor of Science, in addition to the two- year Pre-Veterinary Medicine Cur¬ riculum. The Department of Botany and the Department of For¬ estry are establishing the Lou¬ isiana Tech Arboretum and Botanical Gardens near the college. The tract of land serves as an outdoor labora¬ tory for the two departments. A plant ecology class at work under the direction of Mr. Stanley Ford, assistant professor. 24 - AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY On the farm campus are a mod¬ ern creamery, greenhouses, dairy and livestock barns, silos, a live¬ stock judging pavilion, a poultry plant, a potato curing house, freezer locker plants, farm mach¬ inery buildings, a sawmill, a dry kiln, a weather station, orchards and gardens, pastures, fields, and forests. A class receives instruction in animal hus¬ bandry from Thomas Strickland. Techsters who made a field trip to a livestock show in Fort Worth. HUGHES 1 SCHOOL OF The student in the School of Arts and Sciences is required to acquaint himself with the main fields of intellectual interest and to acquire, through his major study, a thorough knowledge of some special field. The school in- eludes the departments of Art, Chemistry, English and Foreign Languages, Journalism, Mathe¬ matics, Music, Physics, Social Sci¬ ences, and Zoology. As part of preparation for careers as laboratory technicians, turn girls run an experiment in the medical lab. 26 - ARTS AND SCIENCES The facilities of Keeny Hall, the Music, Dramatic Arts and Chemistry Buildings and Lomax Hall are used by the school to in¬ struct students in its variety of subjects. The newest and fastest developing of these fields are philosophy, geography and radio technique. Two classmates and Miss Elizabeth Bethea, professor of art, examine the work done in a fresh¬ man course for education students. Marshall Bretz, associate professor, in¬ structs a music major at the organ. Each year the work of sev¬ eral departments is made pub¬ lic through Tech Theater and radio productions, recitals, and regular art exhibits. 27 DEAN BURTON R. SCHOOL OF Business courses were an im¬ portant part of the work of the col¬ lege from its very inception. Tech ' s first graduate received his degree in 1897 from the Depart¬ ment of Commerce which has pro¬ gressed steadily through the years and in 1941 became the School of Business Administration and Eco¬ nomics. 28 BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND ECONOMICS The School offers the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Bachelor of Accounting. The Bachelor of Ac¬ counting degree can be taken as a graduate degree by students who have received a B.S. in Business Administration. This plan calls for one additional year of formal education and six months intern¬ ship in a C.P.A. or industrial firm. Two students of stenography prac¬ tice shorthand. Students listen to a lecture in an economics course. 29 SCHOOL OF Six major fields of specializa¬ tion are included in the curriculum of the Louisiana Tech School of Home Economics. Students gradu¬ ating with major work in child de¬ velopment, clothing art, commer¬ cial home economics, and home¬ making receive a degree of bach¬ elor of arts in home economics. Louisiana Tech was one of the first schools in the South to offer courses in Home Economics. It is now the only Louisiana college and one of the few in the South to have a School of Home Econom¬ ics division. 30 HOME ECONOMICS Classes are held in the three buildings devoted entirely to Home Economics instruction. Stu¬ dents enrolled in foods, nutrition, textiles, clothings, and home fur¬ nishing courses meet in the labor¬ atories of the main building. Child development majors work with young children in the nursery school. The home management house affords opportunities for practical experience in this field. Mealtimes are times of fun and fellowship for girls in the Home Management house. Students who complete a four-year curriculum are grant¬ ed the bachelor ' s degree and are entitled to teach their specialties in any approved high school in the state and in any of the accredited schools belonging to the Associ¬ ation of Colleges and Secondary DEAN GEORGE W. BOND Schools of the Southern States. Future elementary school teachers observe and practice techniques at Tech’s Model school. A class in library science learns lists of books suitable for the various grade levels. 32 i EDUCATION For students who are preparing to teach in the elementary grades there is conducted on the cam¬ pus a well-equipped elementary school. Arrangements are made for student teaching in Ruston high school for students preparing to teach in high school. This class is about to be shown an educational film in the projection room of Lomax Hall Students working in the nursery school on Tech campus. A film library is maintained by the School of Education and moving pictures are available for use in connection with the various fields of study in the college. The library also lends films to other colleges in the state. 33 SCHOOL OF The School of Engineering of¬ fers courses of instruction for the primary purpose of preparing young men for entry into the en¬ gineering profession. The degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemi¬ cal, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or Petroleum Engineering is grant¬ ed upon the completion of the re¬ quired course of study. DEAN ROY T. The Honor Court was organized in the fall of 1950. The selection of justices for the Court is supervised by the Student Senate, while the other officers are appointed by the seven justices. The Chief Justice is elected by the justices. FOOTBALL JOE AILLET Head Coach and Athletic Director With Head Coach Joe Aillet as gridiron chief for an eleventh year, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs stack¬ ed up a total of six wins and only two conference losses during the 1950 season. Three members of the team were named to the mythical All-Gulf States Conference squad on the first string defensive team. They were: Gene Knecht, fullback, New Orleans; Leo Sanford, center, Shreve¬ port; and Melvin Barney, guard, Shreveport. Chosen for the second offensive team were half¬ backs Joe Rabb of Ruston and Arnold Mathews of Jonesboro. Rabb set a new conference record for yards from scrimmage with 1,228 yards. The Techmen made a shaky start and trailed 6-0 at halftime, but they returned to uncork a terrific ground and pass¬ ing attack in the last two quarters. Accounting for the four TD’s, Rabb and Knecht ran the ball over the pay-dirt stripe, Morrison grabbed a touchdown pass and Woodall pounced on the ball in the end zone after an opponent’s punt was bl ocked by Stev¬ ens. Tech 0 East Texas State 0 The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the East Tex¬ as State Lions, two fine defensive clubs, battled desper¬ ately for a score, but the game ended in a 0-0 dead¬ lock. Both squads made strong bids for touchdowns but each time a goal-line stand by the defense or costly penalties and fumbles killed the threat. In the third quarter, the Canines stopped their oppon¬ ents only six inches from the marker. 197 Tech 14 Southeastern 0 Giving a homecoming show for the six thousand local Ians and handing the Southeastern Louisiana College Lions a beating for the fourth time in four years, the Bulldogs ground out 14 points to their opponents’ 0. The entire first quarter was played in Tech terri¬ tory and the Green and Gold threatened to score three times, but at each effort the Canine defense stiffened and held. The two teams fought to a score¬ less tie at the end of the first half. Knecht, Rabb, and Mathews carried the brunt of the offensive attack opened up in the third quarter and gained two touchdowns, the last one only one minute and 15 seconds before the final whistle. Things looked bad for the local eleven, as the Mus¬ keteers, whose team averaged 191 pounds per man, had racked up 35 points in the first half before Tech could score. Tech 27 Stephen F. Austin 6 The Techsters blunted the axes of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, taking an easy victory, 21-6, with halfback Joe Rabb starring on the ground and in the air. Two of Joe’s passes were directly respon¬ sible for touchdowns, the first being caught by Alex¬ ander and the second by Mardis. The Lumberjacks had considerable trouble in getting the pigskin past the potent Tech defense. Finally, with only two minutes to play, the hitherto scoreless Axe-Carriers recovered a Tech fumble and went 17 yards for a touchdown. 201 Tech 21 Louisiana College 9 The Tech Bulldogs came from behind twice in a topsy-turvy thriller to defeat the Louisiana College Wildcats 21-9. The Pineville boys took advantage of the very first scoring chance and booted a field goal. The 3-0 lead held throughout the first half. Tech marched to the goal in the third quarter but the opponents retaliated after the kickoff with a non-stop aerial drive for six more points. Both teams exhibited a mighty defense and both fought vainly for a score in the first half. In the third quarter the Tennessee lads began a staunch drive toward Tech’s goal and completed a touchdown on a pass play midway in the period. With time running out, the Bulldogs began to cover territory and threatened to score in the last seconds, but the game ended with Tech in the shadow of the goal-post. 203 Tech 20 Miss. Southern 41 Ill a battle for the Gull States Conference champ¬ ionship, Tech hopes went clown before a Mississippi Southern onslaught at Hattiesburg. The Southern¬ ers completely dominated the first three quarters. Rubber Phillips led his team to victory, making the lirst four touchdowns. Tech came to life in the final quarter and rolled up three T.D.’s. Knecht passed to Rabb for the first, Rabb ran for the second and a pass from Knecht to Yarbrough made the third. WINS TITLE A Tech man stumbles through a maze of Southern linemen. 204 BASKETBALL The l ech basketball team began the 1950 season in line form, winning the first six games by good scores. Then the Bulldogs hit a low streak and won only two of the next ten contests, but four of the losses were dropped by only two or three points. Finding their stride once again, the Techsters won four of the last five games and revenged some earlier defeats. VOLLEYBALL Intramural sports, sponsored by the Women’s Recreation Associa¬ tion, began this season with a double-elimination volleyball tour¬ nament. Phi Mu sorority, after losing by six points to Kappa Delta, avenged this defeat and won the championship by topping the KD’s 49-42 and 45-35. BSU captain, breaks for a lay-in. 218 INTRAMURALS BASKETBALL Some of the finest basketball teams to partici¬ pate in Tech intramurals for several years put in their bids for the title, and the Independents proved to be the best club in the running. The squad edged past Phi Mu by two baskets in the first match be¬ tween the two top competitors, but the sorority poured on the steam in a second engagement and won, 45-42, tying the tournament. Then, a keyed-up Independ¬ ent sextet sailed through the final game, making it a decisive, 51 -32 victory. The closest opponent of the two highest-ranking teams was the Baptist Student Union, which suffered a five-point defeat at the hands of the Phi Mu’s. The Independents, basketball champions. The Kappa Alpha Order had its origin in a fraternity organized by stu dents at Washington College, Lexington, Va., in December, 1865, soon aftei General Robert E. Lee became president of that institution. There is a per¬ sistent tradition in the fraternity that General Lee took a special interest in the young organization and influenced the formation of its character. Although a charter member of the National Interfraternity Council, tradition has held Kappa Alpha in the South. Pi Kappa Alpha was founded by six students on March 1, 1868, at the University of Virginia. At that time the fraternity was open only to chapters formed in the South, but the New Orleans convention of 1909 extended mem¬ bership to the entire nation. The Esquire club was founded on the Tech campus by four students in 1936. S. A. Dickson, president of the club, was killed in a plane crash the following year, and the name of the group was changed to Sigma Alpha Delta— his initials in Greek letters. He was president of Louisiana Polytechnic Institute from August 14, 1936, until April 1, 1941, and was president emeritus of the college in later years.
