JSAS HUSTON • MISS SIANA ■ Charles E. Richardson, Editor Buford J. Koen, Associate Editor ANNUAL RECORD OF EVENTS AT LOUISIANA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE RUSTON, LOUISIANA mmmmm r In the belief that the progress and the character of an institution is measured directly by the calibre of its stu¬ dents, the staff of the 1949 Lagniappe has tried to present a composite and well-rounded picture of campus life during the 1948-49 academic year. The myriad activities of Tech, both in the classes and on the campus, have been recorded for the benefit, both now and in the future, of every student. Compiling the Lagniappe on the assumption that this year will be remembered chiefly as one of rapid progress, the staff has attempted to include a segment from every phase of campus life. Aware of the fact that ours is an obligation to bring to the students an annual as representative as possible, the editors have sought to reach out and capture the spirit of the student body — and it is to them, rather than to an indi¬ vidual, that this volume is dedicated. contents ADMINISTRATION CLASSES CAMPUS LIFE ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS familiar quented by Tect sters. Three students at left ar being assist¬ ed by a librarian in search for their respective volumes. • -fmmmi ffjjjj iitq VtVVV Margaret Durrett at low¬ er right is experiment¬ ing with chemicals in a laboratory located in the Chemistry Building at top. The picture at low¬ er left depicts a usual scene in Lomax Hall, middle, immediately preceding examinations in social sciences. Just about the busiest place on the campus is Bogard Hall, above, where future engineers gain their knowledge. Over the steps at right, many stu¬ dents have traveled into Bo¬ gard for their classes in alge¬ bra, physics, calculus, engineer¬ ing, and other mathematical courses. Here is where women sti learn about the scientific cess of hotne-making. At right, two students st bulletin boarj], displaying hontc egcmt mics news. The picture above shores Anna Iclste Cottage, used as a home management house; the final domicile of Horne Economics majors. They learn to take care of a beautiful home while in college. At the left , the Lagniappe photographer caught Lucille McCall bidding her escort farewell on the porch of the Cottage. On the opposite page is a photograph of Prescott Memorial Library. The entrance facing west proudly symbolizes the physical plant of Louisiana Tech. i At left is one entrance to Rob¬ inson Hall, ivhich is shown be¬ low, where men students in the upper classes reside. Thatcher Hall, below, is com- ionly referred to by its occn- p iits as Sophomore Hall, a do nitory for men. To the riglti is pictured an entrance to ’ e bqiilding. Within the home, as shown at left , is a j-j-f ire place of modern appeal. The entrance pictured at the right leads into Reese Hall, above, where agricultural and forestry students receive a por¬ tion of their training. A. E. Phillips Elementary School Building, above. Two preparatory students at right are depicted while in deep con¬ centration, a trait taught them by future teachers training at Tech. The newest addition to Tech, when completed, will be the modern girls’ dormitory, shown below in an architect’s drawing. Capable oj housing 121 women students, the dormitory is being constructed ad¬ jacent to Aswell hall. Construction, started in the summer oj 1948., is going forward at a rapid pace. Romeo and Juliet Others in the cast included James McFadden as Benvolio; Jacque Norman as Mercutio, and Shirley Gibson as Juliet’s nurse. The Tech Theatre Players opened their four-night run of “Romeo and Juliet’’ on Decem¬ ber 6, with the title roles enact¬ ed by Lester Snyder and Mary Frances Manry. Robert Shaw, with his 32-voice collegiate choral and chamber music ensemble, afforded Techsters one of the first bright spots in the concert season when they were presented here on October 27. The choral, making its first national tour, charmed the students with selections from early American pioneer composers and with some of the well known show tunes. Paul Draper and Larry Adler, with their unusual presentation of comedy and classicism, made their first appearance here on March 1. Playing at Tech following the close of their annual season in New York, the famous pair offered a well received program of classic har¬ monica music with dance adaptations. . t Above: The Dallas Symphony orchestra, one of the leading symphonic groups in the nation and a season’s feature on the Louisiana Tech Concert Association’s booking. Appearing in better physical condition than their Texas conference foes, the Bulldogs displayed a fleet array of back- field talent to the fans. Particularly outstanding were three left halfbacks, Joe Rabb, James Bres, and Jimmy Harrison. Harrison hit pay dirt twice for the Techmen and Rabb car¬ ried the ball for the Bulldogs’ third score. With most of their offensive plays broken up before they could get underway, the closest the Yellow Jackets ever came to scoring was when they drove to the Tech 11 yard line early in the first quarter. A. G. Anderson Plain Dealing Center Thomas Brantley Haynesville Guard TECH 17, BRADLEY UNIVERSITY 14 With the educated toe of Joe Michael spelling the margin of victory for the Bulldogs, the Tech eleven defeated the Bradley University Braves of Peoria, Illinois, by a score of 17-14 here on September 27. Michael chalked up the winning points early in the first period with a 25-yard field goal. Among the standouts in the first meeting of the two teams, generally conceded to be one of the best games of the season, were linesmen Jack Kelly and Rudolph Smith and guards Ed Stassi and Melvin Barney. Tech picked up 204 yards on the ground while holding the Bradley Braves to only 64. Playing before a homecoming crowd of 12,000 at Au¬ burn, the Tech defensive work ground the Tigers to a halt, allowing the Alabama team only 68 yards rushing and 12 yards by the aerial route during the second half. Leo Sanford, Center, started the Teclnnen rolling when he intercepted a pass in the third period and raced for a touchdown, which was called back on a clipping penalty. Arnold Matthews, halfback, provided the sparking run of the game when he intercepted a pass and ran 60 yards for a score, which put the Bid 1 dogs in a temporary lead. In their initial encounter, the two teams buckled down early to a see-saw game which saw the lead change so often even the officals became confused. Long running plays and fast passes characterized the game, which was played at Houston. Turning in an excep¬ tional performance for the Tech team were Joe Rabb, Lind¬ sey Aucoin, Jimmy Harrison and Arnold Matthews, who led the Tech ball carriers in the game by turning in 89 yards rushing in eight attempts. tech 21, LOUISIANA COLLEGE 7 Dipping into the Gulf States Conference for the first time, the Bulldogs won over the hapless Wildcats of Louisi¬ ana College, 21-7. The Techsters passed their way to vic¬ tory, with Arnold Matthews scoring first early in the game when he tagged an end-zone pass from Jimmy Harrison. After hitting pay dirt again in the third quarter on a pass from Joe Rabb to Tony Cefalu, the Bulldogs took to the land route to round the game off. Jack Brittain plowed around the end for the final tally of the game. The Canines amassed 16 first downs to the Wildcats’ 6. Bob Horen man Plain Dealing End TECH 10, NORTHWESTERN 7 Playing in the annual State Fair game at Shreveport the Bulldogs effectively deflated the Demon’s ego with Joe Michael’s 29-yard field goal in the third quarter. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the game, watched by more than 12,000 fans reached a climax when Michael booted the pigskin between ' the uprights for his second game-winning field goal of the 1948 season. Jimmy Harrison, leading ground gainer in the Confer¬ ence, scored the only touchdown for Tech when he went around his own right end from the five yard line. Michael’s field goal was set up by Rudolph Smith, who recovered a Demon fumble on the NSC eight yard line. Joe Lynch Shreveport Tackle TECH 19, SOUTHWESTERN 13 Forced to go all out in the fourth quarter to beat the battling Lions of Southeastern Louisiana College, the Tech Bulldogs maintained their lead in the Gulf State conference by shading the downstaters, 19-13, in the homecoming classic here. Anold Matthews, right halfback, scored all three touch¬ downs in the Southeastern tilt. Trailing 13-6 at halftime, and knotted 13-all in the third quarter, the Techmen forged ahead for the first time late in the fourth quarter when Joe Rabb, Bobby Ail let, and A. C. Schiro worked the ba ll down to the enemy’s 17 yard line. Matthews ripped off the needed yardage for a touchdown. Leo Sanford Shreveport Center TECH 20, MEMPHIS STATE 14 Andrew Seely Teague, Texas Guard Breaking a deadlock in the last minute of the game, the Tech Bulldogs trimmed the Tigers of Memphis State, 20-14 here Thanksgiving day, ending the local football season. Matthews, Harrison and Schiro pushed over the scores for the Bulldogs, with Joe Michael adding the extra points. The crowd, diminished by the Thanksgiving absence of many of the students, watched as Tech’s last minute bid for vic¬ tory gathered speed in the waning 50 seconds of the game. Trailing 13-14, the Bulldogs marched from the Tigers’ 47 to the 27 yard line. Schiro then tore ahead to the three, from where Matthews went around left end to give Tech the vic¬ tory. LOUISIANA TECH 6, MISSISSIPPI SOUTHERN 20 The Southerners kept the fleet Tech backfield men bot¬ tled up during the entire tilt and long runs were at a prem¬ ium as the Bulldogs suffered their second defeat of the season. Following up their initial victory, the Techsters journeyed to Clinton, Miss., where they edged out the Mississippi College Choctaws by a 78% - 53% margin. After engaging in two tri angular meets, in which they lost and won respectively, the Bulldogs took on the Demons, losing out in the final event, 60-67. The final meeting of the year was the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference Track meet at Natchitoches, where Ray Booth, technically, won the track meet for the Southwestern team! With Southwestern holding a six-point lead over Northwestern but unable to place a finalist in the javelin throw, Booth made a record toss, giving Tech five points in that event and preventing Northwestern from obtaining enough points to win. An important part of the philosophy of the Order is the conviction, carried out by the many charitable activities of the group, that men should be more concerned with what they can give than with what they can get. The colors of the Order are crimson and old gold, and the flowers are the crimson rose and the magnolia blossom, the tra¬ ditional flower of the South.
