H ' ke STUDENTS LOUISIANA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE (Pne erit The 1946 Lagniappe Foreword Because of conditions brought on by th e war, the Lagniappe was abandoned with the 1943 edition. Even now, in resuming publication, various circumstances have combin¬ ed to prevent the production of a book on a par with previous Tech yearbooks. But we hope this vol¬ ume nevertheless will serve its main purpose of furnishing you a pictor¬ ial record of the year 1945-46 at Louisiana Tech. Commemorating the 50th year of Tech ' s history since its founding in 1895, hundreds of Techsters and alumni celebrated a special homecoming on Saturday, November 17. Beginning with the reg¬ istration period in the morning, a full day of activities was included in the program, highlighted by the address of former Senator lames Pinckney Pope, a director of the TVA and Louisiana Tech gradu¬ ate of 1906, on the topic Fifty Years and a New Era. Also included on the pro¬ gram was the reading of the names of 106 Techsters who died in World War II, and the presentation of engraved memorial certificates to their families. After a barbecue luncheon prepared by the Ruston Chamber of Commerce, a miscellaneous program of Glimpses of Tech was present¬ ed, and a mammoth homecoming parade of cars and floats was staged. Capping the day ' s celebrations were the night football game against the Southwestern Louisiana Institute Bulldogs and the final get-together at the an¬ niversary dance. Academic Parade. The Lagniappe The Lagniappe, a yearly record of the student and faculty life at Louisiana Tech, is usually edited entirely by students selected by the publications committee of the college. Be¬ cause the book was begun late in the year, and the student editor was forced to resign because of illness, most of the work of compiling the book was done by P. C. Burnett of the Tech journalism staff, under the direction of Kenneth F. Hewins, head of the department and director of publications. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the able assistance of Virginia Anne Foster and Eddie B. Pohl, whose help greatly lightened the task of publication. Pictured above are some of the students who assisted in the publication of the Lagni- appe. Left to right, they include Frances V blsh, Eddie B. Pohl, Beth MacDonoucrh, Jimmy Files, Joe Herring and Edith Ann Jones. The Tech Talk The Tech Talk, having as student editor this year E. W. Carswell, who returned to the editorship after more than three years service overseas with the army, is now in its 20th year of publication. Serving as the official college newspaper and as the workshop in which Louisiana Tech journalism students get practical newspaper experience, The Tech Talk is under the supervision of Kenneth F. Hewins, director of publications, assisted by P. C. Burnett. Printed in the Tech printing department, one of the most complete plants of any col¬ lege in the south, under the direction of Henry R. LOUISIANA INTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Winning three out of four of the conference football games, the Bulldogs climaxed a victorious season by being named top team in the LIC. In the season ' s opener the Canines downed the powerful Lake Charles Army Air Field 7-2, with Witmer, of the Tech V-12 unit, scoring for ihe locals. Making it two straight wins, the Bulldogs swamped Howard college 32-6 in the second game of the year. Playing their first conference game of the fall with the Bulldogs of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, the Techsters took their third straight victory, 14-12. Tasting defeat for the first time, the Bulldogs journeyed to Ole Miss for a ding-dong battle that ended with the Mississippians ahead 26-21. Revenge was taken at the expense of another out-of- state college, Southwestern of Texas, who fell before the Techsters 20-14. In only three of the games lost did the Canines lose by more than two points. In their opening game against the Demons of Northwestern the inexper¬ ienced Techmen, playing a squad com¬ posed almost entirely of freshmen without previous college experience, suffered the worst defeat of the year by losing 54-19.. NON-CONFERENCE GAMES Louisiana Tech Opponents 33 Selman Field 35 43 Barksdale 37 34 Barksdale 36 62 Selman Field 42 37 Miss. College 27 36 Miss. Southern 24 44 Keesler Field 60 38 Miss. U. 58 In later conference play the Bulldogs gained experience, confidence and a long string of victories including double wins over Southwestern, 44-34 and 56-33; over Centenary, 54-17 and 47-43; over South¬ eastern, 60-52 and 47-27, and over Loui¬ siana College, 50-33 and 45-37. In non-conference matches the Tech- sters split a pair with Selman Field, los¬ ing 35-33 in Monroe and downing the airmen here 62-42 in a return game. The Barksdale Field Flyers were nipped by the Bulldogs 43-37 on their home floor in Shreveport, and evened the score by downing the locals 36-34 in a return match at the college. Above—Star center Red Latham jumps against Dorcheus of the Northwestern squad. Below—R. C. Looney shoots a long one in the championship match with Northwestern here. Continuing to split series games against non-conference foes, the Techmen defeated Mississippi College 37-27 and were edged out 39-38 in the return game. Against Keesler Field the. Canines lost the first match 60-44 and retaliated by dumping the airmen 51-41 on home grounds. After downing the Mississippi Southern five 36-24, the Bulldogs tangled with the Bengals of Louisiana State University, runners-up for the Southeastern confer¬ ence crown, and were clawed 58-43 in a game that was closer than the final score revealed. Above—Trying for a long shot, Looney heaves one over a Northwestern guard ' s head. Below—A fast action shot of a jump during the deciding game of the conference play-off. The Canines use a bicycle line-up in confusing the Centenary Gentlemen as the Techsters knock off 54 points to the Gents ' 17. At the end of the conference season the championship laurels were split between Tech and Northwestern, each with one defeat on their record. According to LIC regulations, a two-out-of-three game play-off series was necessary. In the first contest Tech center Truitt (Red) Latham dropped one in the basket 30 seconds before the final whistle to give the Canines a 38-36 edge. In a breath-taking return battle the Demons nosed out the Techsters 41-39 when Waggoner put one through the hoop in the last few seconds of play. C. B. Magee recovers for Tech after the Gents missed a free throw. H. Carroll shows the technique of how to do it in sinking a free throw against Louisiana college. The final game of the series found the Tech gymnasium packed to the roof with spectators, and several hundred eager fans being turned away because of lack of seating space. With the lead swapping hands sev¬ eral times, the Techsters managed to forge ahead and win the game and championship 42-35. Doubly sweet to the college was the taste of revenge for iheir worst thumping of the season at the hands of the veteran Demons from Northwestern in the opening game. A very familiar sight at the games—Burnett, Hewins and Jeffress keep¬ ing score. As a result of the conference champ¬ ionship, the Bulldogs were representa¬ tives of the league at the National In¬ tercollegiate Basketball meet in Kansas City, replacing the Northwestern team who had entered the meet before the completion of the LIC play. In their first game the Canines ran into one of the meet favorites, a red hot quintet from East Washington State College, Chaney, Washington, who trimmed the locals 66-44. LOONEY TRUITT (RED) LATHAM BASEBALL Undefeated in conference play for the 1946 season, Tech ' s Bulldog baseballers brought home the third major Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference title of the year to give ihe Canines a clean sweep in sports events for the second straight operating season. It was the third consecutive baseball crown for the Techsters. Opening the season against the Shreveport Sports of the Texas league, the Bulldogs played ragged ball to give the professionals a 10-3 victory. Of the 13 runs scored in the game only 2 were earned, one by each team. In the second game of the year the Sky Raiders of Barksdale Field edged out the Techmen 7-6 at Shreveport, but were thumped by the Canines 7-3 in a return match at Ruston. In the opening conference game against the Wildcats of Louisiana College the Bulldogs ran wild to mark up a 25-1 score in a game cut to seven innings. Four Tech pitchers gave up only 2 hits, while the Pineville nine made 10 errors that helped build up the Tech score. In the first meeting with the downstate Bulldogs of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, played at Ruston, the Techsters won their second straight conference vie orv 4-1. An S.L.I. batter gets set to swing at a fast. one. Another case where a miss is as good as a mile. Journeying to Biloxi, Miss., for a match with the Keesler Army Air Field nine, the Bulldogs trimmed the flyers 3-1, but dropped a return encounter at Ruston 6-3. Playing Southwestern on the local diamond for the second meeting between the two teams, the Tech- men captured the conference laurels by nosing out the visitors 6-5. Sparkplug for Tech was Lester Burkes, who hit 2 home runs and a single in four trips to the plate, and drove in 5 of the 6 Tech markers. Closing out the season with a final victory, the Canines again treed the Wildcats from Pineville, win¬ ning 8-3 in a game that was halted in the eighth inning because of rain. SEASON ' S RECORD La. While Tech does not participate in interscholastic ath¬ letic competition for girls, intramural sports and ac¬ tivities play a large part in the well-being cf the girls. The Department of Healt h and Physical Education for Women is set up to perform the following services: 1. To provide service courses to meet the four hours required by the college for graduation. 2. To provide courses to meet requirements of the State Department of Education for certification of teachers. 3. To provide a curriculum to train teachers in Health and Physical Education and leading to the B.S. degree in the School of Education. Softball—an all-around favorite among the forms of sport of¬ fered the girls. The women students of Tech have a great variety of courses in physical education from which to choose. These courses i nclude badminton, volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, and archery. Tumbling, American country dance, tap-dancing, social dancing, and modern dance head the list of popular courses offered by the department. In addition to the four hours required for graduation, students are expected to enroll each term in one of the many activities.
